Mangalore, Jul 22: A large girder (beam) that was to be used for the construction of the new Netravati parallel bridge broke after it fell on to the road during transportation, causing heavy loss and traffic jam.

The incident occured near the new Netravati bridge near here on Sunday July 22 at around 12.30 pm.

The girder, measuring 33.5 meters was the 95th of the total 96 girders to be fitted to the bridge which is in the last stage of construction. It was being transported by a trailer, and rolled out when the axle of the trailer tyre broke.

The impact of the fall was such that the girder got smashed and was rendered useless. The project manager of Navayuga Constructions, which is undertaking the bridge work, told Daijiworld that the rods in the girder will be removed and reused.

The total loss reported is around Rs 20 lacs.

Speaking to Daijiworld, an eyewitness pointed out, "If the girder could get damaged so easily by falling from the low height of the truck, what would be its quality and that of the bridge?

Traffic chaos ensued soon after the incident, with vehicles from both sides of the road caught in a gridlock.

Dear bcd, Mangalore, I can understand that being involved in the construction of bridges your knowledge is no match to any one. Surely there is no cause to fear had this bridge is constructed in high degree of standards and specification as you briefed. Who is saying girder fell down due to poor quality? it is not. Girder fell down due to vehicle failure, but broke apart due to poor quality of the material or workmanship. Do you think this girder should break when falling from height of hardly 1.5m of trailer? See the flakes of broken uncured concretes in the picture. Its not only in this picture you may see lots of unprotected exposed steels, honey coumbs, irregular broken edges, improper shuttering... etc on the girders which have already installed. It is immaterial knowing or having higher quality standards, but actual implementation is important which is lacking in this bridge construction.

The people who are commenting about the quality of the concrete used in the girder doesn't know the technical view. The concrete used is of high grade concrete and it is prestressed girder. the girder is designed to take the vertical load & not the hor. load, for that after placing at location the girders will be interconnected with diaphragms to make it a complete unit before casting of the deck slab. Also the steel used is Fe500 and the prestressiing steel used is Low carbon steel made by TATA Special steel, this steel properties an ordinary person can't understand. Also the girder is casted and prestressed under strict quality control and supervision.
The girder fell only because of the failure in the jacking system of the transportation trailor and not because of the quality. If there is any quality flaw of concrete the concrete can't take the prestressing force which is induced in to the concrete.
One can't blame the driver if the tyre punctures during the midway while travelling, that quality of the tyre is not good!!!!!
One should not fear anything for the quality of the concrete and the structural stability of the bridge, it is built to the highest standards and specifications with the state of the art concrete grade and steel.
I personally as a technical person involved in the construction and supervision of Bridges in the nation like Bandra worli sea link bridge, Mumbai, PV narasimharao elevated expressway in Hyderabad and various other structures do not agree for various comments reflected in terms of the girder fall do not agree for hurling demotive comments on the contractor.
In view of the above no one should fear about the construction quality and other permanent works involved in the project construction.

Dear Readers, please note that a concrete girder is not flexible but is very stiff. If the girder was constructed as per high industrial norms, then it can take tremendous compressive force, but not a suddenly applied load as happened here.

Also, I find it very strange that the girder was fabricated somewhere else and was being transported to be installed on location.

Mere flexing of the trailer chassis could cause minor or major cracks, which may cause the girder to collapse in the future.

The girder should have been fabricated as near to the final location as possible.

Nice coverage by Daya and keep it up. These pictures will be a prrof how these guys work. I think the trailer could not bare the weight of the heavy girders. From the pictures I can guess that the roads have become bad and the trailer must have tilted to one side causing the girders to fall. Also the quality of the girders seems to be of poor quality. I do not know how it will withstand when the bridge is complete.

once the bridge is completed for a month only the contractors and the company that is doing the construction must use it and no one else. they must use vehicles filled with their family members if needed politicians responsible for giving the contract to them. bridges are supposed to be tested with the bullet tankers will this bridge survive a enfeild bullet test or a heavy truck test. what quality this bridge will have. thank God it fell off from the truck. authorities please check the bridge well before declaring it open for the public.

Guys, need not to worry about the quality of the concrete beam. Navayuga has to maintain the bridge and road for the 25 years, so they will take care abt the quality. otherwise instead of twenty lakh loss ,they will loose two crore.
Another thing to lookafter the quality NHAI is appointed one consultant name AARVEE assosiates his head is from USA.

Sitting in AC room and typing about quality is easy, concrete beam load capacity is calculated for vertical side and it collapsed in side wise.... so it will get crack. I heard that for each concrete gurder 40 numbers of testing cube will be casted and it will be tesyed in lab after curing it for 28 days. inside stressing will be there.... if any foult is there in concrete slab, it will break while doing stressing. After passing all tests only they will transport. They are not fool or mad to risk their money and name of their company......

Well a girder broke with just the impact of its falling to the ground on account of broken axle. This raises the question as to the quality of the work. Now additional 20 lacs will be spent to replace this girder. How many such mishaps will happen at the cost of tax payers money allowing the corrupt officials involved to pocket the booty. God intervened in this case, brought the quality of work to light.

If bridge girder falls such a low height and breaks so easily then the quality of the work is so poor. We can't expect that bridge for so long time. Most of the money is grabbed. It is better to investigate the quality of work and bring those to justice. It is all public money.
