Sullia: SMS Lottery Scam Devours One More Prey, Girl Loses over Rs 2 Lac

Daijiworld Media Network – Sullia

Sullia, Jul 23: Although there have been repeated warnings and reports on SMS and email scams in the media, people continue to fall prey to fraudsters.

Shwetha, who is pursuing her higher studies, recently received an SMS congratulating her on winning Rs 1.6 crore. The message was sent regarding a win by a Coco-Cola company contest which also asked her to pay a huge sum of Rs 2.18 lac as 'customs duty'.

She paid the amount without suspecting a thing and learnt that she was duped only when she received a second message asking her to pay another Rs 1 lac. She enquired with her friends and learnt of the fraud.

A complaint was lodged at the Sullia police station in this regard.

    Hello to all the readers,
Just the other day I received a call on my mobile by a man saying that I have won Rs 40 Lakhs in a lottery basis my mobile SIM card.
He wanted my Bank account no, credit card details etc. Also he wanted me to deposit Rs 4 Lakhs to complete some formalities.
I asked him to send me 10 lakhs first to my address.
Of course, I knew this was a call from a fraudster.
When I asked why someone is disposing huge amounts of money to people, he started giving vague answers.
At this time I told him to collect all the 40 Lakhs and shove it where the sun does not shine.
Time and again we get reports in the media about people getting cheated. Let us all be more careful

Is it too hard to get to the bottom of it to learn where the money went?. She must have deposited the money through bank. Is she really doing her Masters?, I doubt it.

Strange that The Girl who is pursuing Higher studies is unaware of such incidents.
It is clear that She doesn't have boyfriend, otherwise at-least he would have suggested not to send those lakhs.
didn't she share her excitement with family or friends (Girls)???????
How can a Girls mouth shuts at this point of time??
If the money is borrowed, why didn't someone question the reason for the money she need??
A Girl is studying., From where did she earn so much of money???

I live in New York and receive many emails stating that someone has left a big fortune. that person is either dead or he is about to die due to some terminal sickness. Please send me your address, telephone number, bank account and so on and so forth. But I just email back stating to show me the money. This racket has been going on since a long time and thousands have been cheated like how Shwetha last her money. Time and again we get news in the media but still people get cheated. Some of these guys want easy money but the best part is that they will tell about this only when they cheated. Till then they keep it a secret.

    Mr Rakesh Shetty,

We can only wish that getting rid of SMS spams were as simple as giving out an order to stop all spams. This is as complicated as cyber crimes, and these kind of spams are continuously investigated.

I do understand your emotion behind this issue though.

In today's world nothing comes for FREE. Forget about lottery, Even the air we breathe will be charged in near future. Read this story One man gave an advertisement on news paper " Anybody wants to earn quick money register yourself with just RS.10". Hundreds of people registered. Then the same man gave a statement few days after. "This is the way to earn quick money".

Poor victim!!! seems to be from the rural areas of Sullia (assume she was unaware of such frauds) :-)

In the current world of Mobile phones, internet and SMS's, the Govt should add a Topic in the primary school to aware the kids about such SMS and email frauds (Cos even a new born kid today knows to use the cellfones & Internets) :-D

As rightly said by Mr. Rakesh Shetty, Daijiworld should raise these type of fraud SMSs & emails to the concerned and the public should be made aware of these cheatings.
Mr. Rakesh Shetty, I am sure "CORRUPT UPA TEAM" & "OUR CORRUPT ....( to whom you are refering Mr. Kapil Sibal/Mr. Chidambaram) are not ruling the world, as these types of fraud SMSs & emails are prevailing all over the world.

I think these matters should be raised in front of IMF/WORLD BANK by the respective authorities and see that concerened messagers & email senders should be thoroughly investigated.

It is not poor people fall prey to these, it is those who are badly in need/necessity of funds for some or the other concrete reasons, i.e. the middle class people.

JUST PASS ON THE AWARENESS MESSAGE to those whom we know and those who handle SMS/emails.
    TAKE CARE

The best way to silence such people is to ignore such e-mails or SMSs. An educated person like Shwetha shouldn't have fallen prey to such a fraud. She should've asked the SENDER of the message to deduct whatever amount she's to pay from her PRIZE MONEY & send the rest to her.
