Mangalore, Jul 24: 'Afghanistan in Transition: Beyond 2014?' is a new book by Mangalorean Dr Shanthie Mariet D'Souza, who is now a research fellow at the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS), National University of Singapore.

An alumna of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya where she did her bachelor of arts in psychology, criminology and English literatue, Dr D'Souza has scaled the ladder of success in her field. She has a PhD in International Relations, American Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

She has been associated with the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, New Delhi and a visiting Fulbright Scholar at South Asia Studies, The Paul H Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins University, Washington DC (2005-2006)

She has a number of published works to her credit, including writings in journals and books. she has special interest in Afghan insurgency and the counter insurgency campaign, transition and issues in long term stabilization of Afghanistan, United States counter terrorism policy in South Asia, India`s foreign and security policy and so on.

Her rich knowledge and experience are a result of her field studies in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Jammu and Kashmir and India's North East. Dr D'Souza has frequently travelled to various provinces of Afghanistan for her field research.

Among her published work are co-edited books, 'Saving Afghanistan' (2009), 'Perspectives on South Asian Security', and  papers on Talking to the Taliban; Unity of Effort: The missing link in the Afghan Counter Insurgency Campaign, NATO in Afghanistan; Afghanistan in South Asia: Regional Cooperation or Competition; India's Aid to Afghanistan; US-Pakistan Counter-Terrorism Cooperation; Indo-US Counter Terrorism Cooperation; Taking Stock of the Global War on Terrorism; India-US relations; India-Afghan relations; Internal Security Issues; Mumbai Terror Attacks and India-Pakistan Relations; Media and Counter Terrorism; Gender and Combating Terrorism.


About the book (source: Pentagon Press)

Her latest book has been published by Pentagon Press and costs Rs 795. The book brings together varied Afghan voices to set the agenda, address critical gaps in the ongoing transition process and suggest alternate course of action by setting a forward looking agenda, beyond 2014. The common thread that runs through all the chapters of the book is that the transition process needs to be Afghan led and Afghan owned. This book provides diverse perspectives of the Afghans by taking a realistic assessment of the achievements and challenges in building local capacities and institutions in key sectors--security, political, governance and economic, for these would form the basis of future progress.

    After Americans leave Afghanistan in 2014 Taliban will take over not only Afghanistan but Pakistan too...We dont have to read any books to know that...one billion USD India spent on infrastructure of that country will go in drain...

    Instead of criticizing Dr. Shanti, why don't you write some articles about Indian tribes and enlighten us or go and educate the savage Pathans.
