Mangalore : J R Lobo to Join Congress, Contender for Assembly Polls

Mangalore : J R Lobo to Join Congress, Contender for Assembly Polls

Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Jul 25: In a significant development, former city commissioner of Mangalore, and executive director for Pilikula Nisargadhama Society, J R Lobo who has taken voluntary retirement from administrative services, has reportedly decided to join politics. Sources close to him told daijiworld that he will be joining Congress party within the next few days, and will emerge as one of the strong contenders for the upcoming assembly elections.

With the next Karnataka state assembly elections due by mid - 2013, there are hardly 7-8 months left to begin the election process. All major political parties are busy in finalising their candidates, however, several aspirants have also started lobbying for tickets from the respective political parties.

J R Lobo is expected to be one of the strong contenders from Congress party from Mangalore assembly constituency. Not being a primary member of the party, J R Lobo has surprised many Congress ticket aspirants in the city.

Ivan D'souza, who lost the last assembly elections with Congress ticket against BJP's Yogish Bhat, had been so far projected as the Congress candidate for the next assembly polls. But now, J R Lobo's name has created ripples among the Congress as well as political circles of Mangalore.

When daijiworld contacted Ivan about this development, he said that he was aware of the latest development. "I have been working for the party day and night ever since I joined in 2004. Even after losing the last elections, I have been in touch with people irrespective of caste or creed. I have worked for the welfare of all communities. People say I have been working for the constituency more than the current MLA. In such a situation, I strongly believe that the party is with me. I will get the ticket," he asserted.

On the other hand, a strong team with the help of Congress activists, corporators, and other leaders have started their groundwork to set the stage for J R Lobo's entry into the Congress fold.

In the month of August 2012, there will be a felicitation function for J R Lobo at Town Hall, which could be treated as a launching pad of J R Lobo's political career.

A bureaucrat with a clean image, who started his career as a tahsildar, went on to become assistant commissioner, MCC commissioner and Pilikula Nisargadhama executive director, besides holding a number of other important posts, 59-year-old J R Lobo has been working silently for the needy. His political innings could be interesting as he has hardly had any experience in politics.

Political circles in Mangalore are curiously looking forward to see whether an upright bureaucrat could fit into politics.

Apart from Ivan D'Souza and J R Lobo, there seem to be several other aspirants from Mangalore constituency. Suresh Ballal, Dolphy D'Souza Bantwal, Naveen D'Souza and Rohan Monteiro's names are also in the air for Congress ticket.

After reading most of comments, I think, in Mangalore City South constituency voter turnout is very poor. After Blesius d Souza no chritian candidate won. Choosing Best candidates like LOBO is important to woo the educated voters. He is experinced in Urban development, Tourism development (Pilikula) Infrastructure deve etc. Once Ivan D souza lost. Now, Lobo is best choice. At last why congress choosing X'ian candidate here ?

THIS IS GREAT STEP TAKEN BY MR. J R LOBO. A NOBLE, HONEST PUBLIC SERVENT DESERVE THE SEAT FOR MLA AND HE SHALL BE EAGERLY LOOKING FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE THE MANGALORE CONSTITUENCY.
DIFFERENCES AMONG THE PARTY WORKERS IS VERY HUMAN AS THERE WERE MANY ASPIRANTS FOR THE SEAT OF MLA WITHIN THE CONGRESS PARTY. TO SEE AN ABLE CANDIDATE'S ENTRY IN TO POLITICS AND THE NEED FOR COMPROMISE ON PERSONAL AGENDA IS NEED OF THE HOUR. IT IS BETTER TO SACRIFICE THE EGO AND SHOW THE SOLIDARITY TO THE CADIDATURE OF MR. J R LOBO AND STAY UNITED FOR THE SAKE OF MANGALORE.
CONGRATULATIONS J R LOBO SIR, MAY GOD GRANT YOU GOOD HEALTH, WISDOM AND STRENGTH TO CONTINUE YOUR SERVICE TO THE HUMANITY!!!

There are quite a good number of congress leaders who wish to contest the forthcoming assembly election from Mangalore or other constituencies. The front runners are Ivan D'Souza,
J.R.Lobo, Rohan Monteiro, Dolphy D'Souza, Naveen D'Souza, Lancelot Pinto, Charlotte Pinto and  Hilda Alva.

Ultimately one who manages to get support , blessings and endorsement form our beloved Bishop A.P. Rony baab Colaco, Oscarbaab , Soniabai and Rahulbaba will be the final candidate. Let's wait and watch! And wish them good Luck!

JR Lobo may be a successfull bureaucrat but is a political novice. Mangalore deserves a seasoned candidate like Suresh Ballal who has wider appeal. Ivan is a miserable failure whom the community does not trust. He is propped up by the few who have no no grass root knowledge. After Blasi there is no significant leader. Naveen, Lancelot offer a role but need more time. However Lobo can be given ticket if there is no alternative.

Going thru some of the comments regarding the entry into politics by Mr.Lobo, I am wondering if one has to go thru shouting slogans, rastha roko, pelting stones on shops, jumping from one political party to another, involved in a scandal or two, having few goondas around will qualify such persons to call themselves as POLITICIANS??

If mother Theresa had to contest election as Congress party candidate these people would measure her "POLITICAL" weight by the same standards I said above, and easily brush her aside as a unsuitable candidate.

In my opinion Coastal K'taka is fed up of "POLITICS" and so called "POLITICIANS" one can find by the dozen in our region, and are really looking for people who have served the region excellently in many capacities and who are not "POLITICIANS" at all!!

We don't need anymore "POLITICIANS" but people who feel the heartbeat of the people such as J.P. Hegde etc. to contest from Congress party or any party.

Time will tell whether many other probable candidates voiced by the commentators are really worthy of the occasion and meet the standard of new "POLITICAL" wave flowing over Coastal region.

There is not much difference between Ivan & Dolphy. Dolphy does not have any grass root support. He is not even in a position to win Grama Panchayat elections. He does not have any support base. So giving him any opportunity to contest is self suicidal.

Why do we still project Ivan as a potential candidate for MLA? He has twice lost MLA elections, once from JDS in KAPU and once from Congess in Mangalore. He has not even won any Taluk Panchayat or Zilla Panchayat election till now. And last time his defeat was by all time low votes for congress. He was nominated as Cashew Board Chairman by JDS and he has not done anything good. Whereas Mr. J R Lobo has done tremendous development in Pilikula.

Ivan has completely failed to take support from his own christian community last time and votes for congress from christian dominant areas were less. Being an advocate he has never contested/won any bar counsil elections till now. His own advocate friends are not in his favour. So it is high time for Ivan to introspect and accept Mr. J R Lobo as mass leader. If congress ticket is given to Ivan, it is all sure that Congress is going to lose.

Congratulations Lobo Sir, Very good and right decision, shocking too for many who have established themselves in the COngress Party. But to be frank some unique developments like this were definitely needed to give Congress a new strength. We all know that you are a very good and upright administrator with an unique vision for the society.

This would mean a lot to the party as well. Now it's time for all the congressmen to think in a different way to bring congress party to it's past glory. FOr this it is very necessary to take a selfless and wise decision to promote J.R. Lobo for the MLA candidature.

Let's show that there is still unity amongst us and we are there to support the right candidate. All the best to J.R. Lobo. You have shown that nothing is impossible for the one with a will to bring change in the society.

The idea that you can merchandise candidates for running the erands of politics from bureaucracy( Mr. J.R. Lobo) and gather votes on the account of platform given by the government- is I think ultimate indignity to the spirit of politics. Here is a virtuous man, Shri Dolphy, working as a silent hero for the people irespective of cast or creed without an official publicity stunt, been in politics through and through, having sacrificied his ZP ticket from Neermarga has set a precedence .

Its for whom the bell tolls to rise to occasion and choose a person who has worked within the party, respected by the people. If people like Mr. J.R. Lobo get ticket then the idea of bureaucrats running political parties will be established and affirmed. In simple words, a man of modest stature with a vision to serve people with simple living as a motto in life is a making of a great leader.

The christian community is capable of getting one or two seats in the whole of Karnataka. It is a tragedy that to these valuable seats available for the community several christian contenders fight among themselves. I request that we keep the interst of the community first and show some sense of belongingness to the community.

Thus be open to see as to who should be the right candidate. There should be certain criteria for the best candidate. He/she should excel in terms of integrity, experience in the field of politics, greater ability to negotiate for the welfare of the community at the higher levels, youthful enthusiasm and most of all tremendous allegiance to the community. Shall we endeavour to choose one candidate using all these criteria? Let not each one promote his/her candidate and spoil the bigger show in the process. I feel already Mr. Dolphy D'Souza and Mr. Ivan D'Souza have established themselves as candidates in the minds of the people. Let us see who could be the better candidate among them according to the above mentioned criteria.

Though at the state level Mr. Ivan D' Souza is making mark, Mr. Dolphy D'Souza is a force to reckon with both at the state as well as at the National level and has very good clout with the state and central leadership and has availed hundreds of projects through his contacts for the community. Mr. Dolphy D'Souza stands tall among all the contenders as regards youth fulness, integrity, experience in the field of politics, ability to carry out welfare activities, responding quickly to the needs of the people, having good rapport with the significant leaders (across all parties) in politics, single minded allegiance to the church and integrity of person.

He is a youth who has bright future and necessary ingradients to climb the wrungs of leadership in politics. This is my choice for the candidature in Mangalore to the next assembly elecetion.

Lets not kill the campaign even before its begun. Why do we compare Mr. Lobo to Mr. Dsouza. This election is for the state assembly and not a parish council seat where only catholics vote. Mr. Lobo has proven himself to all communities as a honest and hardworking person.

Mr. Dsouza needs some guidance on which issue to take up. Last week he protested against the passport office functioning. Why did he not get in touch with his fellow congress man the from MEA under whom the passport office comes to resolve the issues. He protested against his own party with no result.

All Mangaloreans please analyse the last election results. A large section of Christian votes got split and one section did not vote for Ivan. Now here is a leader known to all Mangaloreans that he is clean, daring, knowledgeable, and a man good at heart. Why Mr Yogesh Bhat has been winning continuously? please think over. He is a upright man in the wrong party.

Now here is a person in J.R.Lobo who can easily win against BJP since our votes will not be divided. He is known to all communities for his good work. I am sure a section of BJP votes will come in favor of Mr J.R.Lobo. Mr Ivan had is chance and he lost. He is the same Ivan and the Mangaloreans voters are also the same. So Ivan, if you are a true Congress worker please encourage Mr Lobo and give him your support. Having a person like J R Lobo contest the election definitely would mean that Congress would have to strip itself of all the baggage that it has as there are enough of so called "photgraph" leaders as they could be termed. If only they had an ounce of courage to do what J R Lobo did as a bureaucrat then Mlore could have been far better. I would be surprised if people like Ivan or Naveen get ticket from Congress as this would only be the death knell for the party in Mlore. Having a dearth of leaders it is time for the Congress to look for fresh blood who are without controversy and are known to focus theur energies on development of city and not their own pockets
The likes of Mr. J R Lobo would gain a lot of votes whether they contest from congress or even BJP fr that matter. An educated voter (if Mlore can be termed educated with all the issues people face) would have to look beyond party affiliations if they wish to see a city develop as a real economic power

Nobody can accuse Ivan for the last time’s lose while lot of strategies, applications are implied tallying with the opposition move win or loss is not predictable while a person himself is not a winning factor.
An upright man, men of integrity, Mr. Lobo from the voluntary retirement, on unity factor, to thrive can wait for some more time but to support Ivan this time . JR lobo will be the right candidate and I am sure he will surely win the election if congress allows him. When Lancylot contested the elections he just lost by 5000 votes not because BJP was stronger than congress but just because congress did not want him to be the MLA. Ivan Dsouza is not the right candidate as congress members are surely not in favor of him. He has already been given a chance and now its JR lobo's turn. Ivan has already made a statement that he wants to contest and I am sure that he will play a dirty game if he not allowed to contest. JR lobo is having good relationship with all the congress men and I am sure he will win the election. All the BJP people think that BJP is strong in coastal region but they have failed to understand that congress is not united and that is why they win the elections. If Suresh Ballal supports Lobo then I am sure Lobo will win. Hope our religious leaders do not intervene and support Ivan in this case.

Since JR Lobo is in public domain and know the things in working of public office like MCC and many others, sure knows the nerves of the people of the constituency. As reported in the news,if he is known as non corrupt and a clean man,the factor of his joining Congress will be shot in the arm and better candidate than all those whose names figured here. The only negetive factor for the political aspirants of Mangalore(other than BJP) is that Mangalore is a fortress of BJP since long time.It remains to be seen whether the new political equations can withstand the popularity of BJP/Yogish Bhat present MLA.

Mr.Ivan D'souza is the right candidate at Managlore and this time he will WIN. As a Outsider of mangalore, he did good job and Today he is a popular and known personality in Mangalore..other contender names may simply spoil some votes and unity..!!!

Ivan D'souza may leave the Congress now and join the JD(S). Watch and wait. He will have sleepless nights from now on.

The Congress needs people of Mr.J.R.Lobo's stature.

I congratulate the Congress party on this move, looking forward to the MP and MLA elections in 2014 with new candidates and faces.

People are fed up of the corrupt BJP and their tricks.
