Mangalore, Jul 26: Scores of people including ex-army men gathered at the war memorial at Kadri here on Thursday July 26 to pay their respects to the martyrs of Kargil war.

'Kargil Vijay Diwas', which marks India's victory over Pakistan in Kargil war fought in 1999, was organized by the Dakshina Kannada Ex-servicemen Association. The day is observed across India every year on July 26.

Speaking on the occasion, Col Sharath Bhandary said, "July 26, 1999 was a proud day in the history of India, a day when the country's prestige reached its zenith with the victory against Pakistan."

"In the Kargil war, as many as 518 soldiers lost their lives and 1,211 soldiers were injured. Four (including three posthumous) were awarded Param Chakra, 9 were given Mahavir Chakra and 55 Vir Chakra," he informed.

The public paid floral tributes to the martyrs, lit candles in their memory and prayed for the departed souls.

Among those present were K C Prabhu of Lions Club, former president of Ex-servicemen Association Radhakrishna Shetty, Col Balakrishna and I N Rai.

'Kargil Shayied Diwas a Proud Day in India's History'

Because we lost our soldiers who guard our country day and night and I salute them

But I don't agree celebrating the day as 'Kargil Vijay Diwas 'because India didn't win any place back..... and we proudly celebrate 'Kargil Vijay Diwas a Proud Day in India's History' but it means actually as 'Kargil Shayied Diwas a Proud Day in India's History'to me.

Dear Indian soldier, I stand up and salute each one of you. My heart goes out to the family of the martyrs, who laid their lives and are forgotten. My blood boils when I read the way the captive soldiers of Kargil were brutally tortured, just imagine, eyes being busted and gorged out, genitals severed, ear drums pierced.
No, Sadly we have forgotten to value this , We run behind film stars, we are more interested in gossips of Kareena-Saif, pelvic gyrations of imported maals like Katrina Kaif, We are ready to brave the hot sun and wait for hours to catch of glimpse of these of bollywood stars who live a high life with common peoples money, We would like to learn more info of the botoxed Khans & the star kids. We watch movies for titillation. We will blindly ape the west.
We will glorify our cricketers so they fill their own coffers. We will cheer them when they win match after match against Bangladesh in the Indian pale wickets.
We will support our politicians to watch porn in the parliament. We will worship our leaders, who have inherited a fancy name to rule this country.
No issues , for a few minutes one day in a year we will pretend to remember you.
I feel so depressed to learn your sacrifice is on its way to insignificance,
I am sorry, you will always be in my heart.

This cannot be a vijay Divas. hundreds of our brave soldiers died due to an invasion of the terrorist enemy, and one of our own spineless politician gave a safe passage back home to the enemy soldiers captured !.
There was a corruption racket even in importing massive scale of coffins for soldiers at inflated rates, a second racket of alotting apartments meant for cargil martyrs to the politicians.
A country run by thieves and rogues indeed.
    It is an unforgettable tragedy.

Agree with you Frank, i think 90% Indians and 100% politicians do not know the sacrifice of Capt Kalia and tis 5 soldiers during the the initial days of Kargil war, they very badly tortured before being killed. there was no protest by our govt, no Geneva convention on prisoners of war. One of my friends from Capt Kalia's village told me that Capt Kalia's mother is still in shock over the torture and asks in which religion such a death is written? presently we are in a century we we are more worried about Tendulkars 100th century and giving him Bharat Ratna, after some days we can see some politicians in parliment fighting for Paramveer Chakra for Tendulkar. and forget about Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Vigyan and only believe in JAI CORRUPTION!.

I am pround of soldiers who are working in Himalaya region where some times the cold is -70 degree celcius. We do not know their sufferings who have left their family somewhere in other states and thinking about their kith and kins. Simply celebrating the Kargil Vijay Diwas is not at all enough by pouring crocodile tears. It is the responsibility of the Government and general public to give utmost respect to such soliers and their family members. It is our bounden duty to donate financially to the family members of the soldiers who have given their life for our sake.

The terrains of Kargil are really tough one. The peaks where the close combats where fought are the toughest one. Few months of the year neither side would stay there as the climate would collapse. It was unfortunate, that Pakistan soldiers crossed the boarder & occupied Indian bunkers before our soldiers went as routine. Consequence a war, which we won with a great loss of lives.

Salute to our brave soldiers, Vande Matharam...Jai Hind..

Kargil does not remind me of the victory over Pakistan, but savageness of those from across the border, who cut the noses-ears and removed the eyes of some of our brave soldiers while alive and sent their bodies on donkey's back.

I can never forget the sacrificies done by our soldiers, to keep us safe.

I too agree with Oliver's comments, we are selfish, doing nothing to our nation.

For the customs- gold, issue we saw over 400 comments (how selfish we are) but to salute the Kargil hero's hardly any.
