Mangalore, Jul 27: The controversy over the name of an upcoming Tulu comedy movie has been amicably settled, with the name being changed from 'Rampa' to 'Sompa'.

Addressing a press meet here on Friday July 27, Thamma Lakshmana on behalf of the movie cast and crew told reporters there was no scene or character in the directly or indirectly related to real-life personality Rampa or Ramappa Poojary.

"There is no such situation or scene in the movie that would directly or indirectly effect the prestige or dignity of Ramappa. There is a character in the movie who helps others in times of need, akin to lord Sri Ram. But if we keep the movie's name as 'Sri Ram', it would make it sound like a devotional movie, and as this is a comedy film, it was named 'Rampa' so as to relate to the character in a different way," he explained.

"But as Ramappa's family visited us and expressed their objection, we are changing the movie's name to 'Sompa'," he added.

Rampa (the late Kankandy J Ramappa Poojary) was a noted personality in Mangalore city. His family members had directly contacted the film production team and requested to change the movie's name, as it would harm the reputation and dignity of the man and may have hurt the sentiments of his family, friends and fans.

"We know that it is difficult for the producers to change the movie's name at the last minute. But if they incur any loss due to the change in the name, we are ready to pay a part of it," said Dinesh Anchan, Ramappa's son who represented the family.

Members of both parties, J Narayana Poojary, film producer, Geetha Hegde, and actor Arvind Bolar were present.

Any one who met Rampanna of Mangalore, during his days - will definitely get upset when we, mangaloreans make fun of him. I agree that he did not have great qualifications. But he had a great heart. He was a good human being. Because of his effort, a college was built in Mangalore. For decades, he had served Mangaloreans with the best quality food for a throw away price of Rs. 1 to 5/-. Is it fair to insult such a man without knowing his actual background?

The style must be adapted from bollywood, the trend was started by Amir khans who used to create controversy just before the movie to release to gain publicty and get some free marketing.
Now i think the amir khan's script must have purchased by tulu movie producer.

Hi Lancelot. if some one uses your name EL EN T, certainly the L&T company will sue them.Hence better they name their film as ENT!Again there will be some problem from ENT specialists. To avoid all these controversies, its better always name a play or a film as Pudar Deethuji!!

It is nice to know that the name of the Tulu Comedy movie is changed from Rampa to Sompa. Instead of getting into additional expenditure for changing the name, they ought to have thought about it earlier. It looks they didn't get any other title!

Even Sompa will not hurt sentiments of those families carrying such name or surname? Even AB has no problem with Bol "Bacchan". It is rightly said "What is in a name?". The "Disclaimer" is enough everyone knows, then why this issue?

'Sompa' is the name of his father Late Somappa Poojary. So please either 'Rampa' or "Sompa" should not be titled for any comedy film. If any such film is sponsored by their family it is ok. Such a respected person's name should not be title for a comedy film.
