Mangalore, Jul 30:
A public felicitation ceremony for J R Lobo, who joined Congress recently, was organized at St Sebastian’s auditorium, Bendore, here on Sunday July 29 evening.

NRI entrepreneur and philanthropist Ronald Colaco felicitated J R Lobo for his exemplary social work and civil service in various important posts.

Addressing the gathering, Ronald Colaco said, "It's all our effort to get a sincere, honest officer as a politician to represent the Mangalore community, and since Congress has decided to give only two places for Christian representatives (Bangalore and Mangalore) we thought he would be ideal."

"There are lots of issues facing society - issues related to culture, religion - fundamental organizations attacking places of worship, indulging in moral policing now and then and so on. J R Lobo's credentials are well known to the public and to political parties. If he is the local representative, things will get done at the government level as he knows many in the government,"

He further said, "There are apprehensions that he is new to politics. How can he be new? He has vast experience in managing various political stalwarts, like Oscar Fernandes, Veerappa Moily, Blazsius D'Souza, Nagaraj Shetty and many more. He has managed politicians and their requirements, and at the same time met the needs of the people, be it with healthcare, garbage disposal, roads and so on, in every capacity."

He recalled that when he was the honourary chairman of Karnataka Agenda Task Force (KATF) J R Lobo had provided an enormous amount of statistics as a result of which the sea port was upgraded, the airport began international operations, access roads were developed and other roads were widenened. "He has done his work silently, no one knows about," he said.

"Because of the extent of development works he did, in the previous elections, 43 Congress corporators got elected," he pointed out.

Hence, he cannot be new to politics, Colaco asserted.

Ronald Colaco openly condemned the incident at the Congress office on the day when J R Lobo and other 30-40 people joined the party. "Ivan D'Souza who I had helped even when he was new and even after he lost the last elections by 9000 votes, came to the programme with anti-social elements and tried to create a ruckus."

"I had warned him the previous night that I had information that he would be trying to create problems, and told him, 'If you are a sincere and loyal member of Congress you should welcome Lobo and not disrupt the programme and spoil your political career. I asked him to be part of the political process and that I was his well-wisher. But the next day he created so much chaos. As chairman of IFKCA, I strongly condemn this," Colaco said.

MLA U T Khader said that one has plenty to learn from veteran bureaucrat J R Lobo.  "The district Congress committee is fortunate to have him as its member," he said.

Local Congress leaders Suresh Ballal, Tejomaya, Kallige Taranat Shetty, Mahabala Marla, Tejasviraj and others were present.

Titus Noronha welcomed the gathering. Lawyer M P Noronha delivered the introductory address. Vitori Karkal compered the programme.

Here is a fine man with a clean career in civil life with achievements outside politics.

These are the kind of people we should have in politics, people who have achieved something outside politics before(Krishna Palemar).

Never elect people who go to politics from college and that is the only thing they do to earn a living. Politics should be a service not a means of earning a amassing wealth as it is for so many of our politicians.

We are really proud to see Mr. Lobo as a active congress man. We welcome his move and we appreciate Mr. Ronald Colaco's effort to introduce him and supporting him. As we know his background (sincerity and simplicity)he should be given right place from our community in Congress party to see the welfare of Catholic community in Karnataka.

After Mr. Blasius D'Souza and Mr. Rodrigues nobody came out openly in public locally to safeguard the minimum rights of our community. We cannot forget stall wards like beloved George Fernandes, Lawrence Fernandes and Michael Fernandes for their contribution without any self ambition for their dedication and supplication towards the society/community without any tantrum.
Thank you Mr.Colaco for introducing a sincere catholic person to public life and Mr.Lobo we wish you all the best......

Statesmanship – People like APJ Abul Kalam, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, MMS have come from different backgrounds like science, philosophy, economics etc. Values like integrity, honesty and excellence do matter when it comes to politics too. Routine politics is rotten. People need drastic change - replacement of corrupt-business-minded people with honest-service-minded people.

In India, political arena is abode of lawyers. I fail to understand why majority of politicians are lawyers? Lawyers n police become redundant if people maintain harmony. Public offices must have resourceful people from all streams. People are fed up with politics of loot n exploitation. Politics is business these days. Indian political system nurtures nepotism, crime, accumulation of public wealth through cheating. We have become used to such a system. People must be educated about politics of their own well-being ! To live and survive in rotten system for someone like Mr.Lobo is tough. Hope he can make heaven out of hell for future generations of Mangalore.

Many people may not know about Mr.J.R.Lobo. It doesnt matter. He will not advertise himself. You have to find details for yourself - his footprints are spread in Mangalore region across communities. He doesnt aspire for big. He doesnt want fame or accolades. He understands well about how insignificant when it comes to game of nature and almighty. But people need him for betterment of Mangalore. His mind always engrossed with thoughts that anchor around societal problems and nature ( flora and fauna). He has interacted with innocent people, people in problems as well as intellectuals over decades. Born in economically backward family, his life trajectory span from extreme hardships in early upbringing to current state. He definitely is connected with people from all backgrounds. Proper platform is needed for one to serve society in efficient way.

    Part3
Mr.J.R.Lobo - man of vision and ideas. Lower strata ( economic impoverishment ) needs support - health, education etc. Higher strata - people acquiring higher skills - need suitable platform to pursue excellence. A politician must strive for balance. Coordination of intellect ( to understand problems) and willingness to serve. South Canara has scope in tourism, industrial, infrastructure, educational sectors. Job creation comes from a long term vision and implementing that vision through institutions, projects of societal benefit that also strive to secure good future for many. Articulating vision is fundamental quality of a politician – holistic, inclusive approach is must. Then have a mission to implement that vision. Setting right direction in evolution of a society is in the hands of a politician! Being a good politician demands huge sacrifices. Being good listener and having no ego will make people to approach their representative any time. Most of the time, we are stopped to meet our leader.

How many of us keep an eye on life-style of a politician – habits like lavish life, drinking, resort, partying? Hw many of us take stock of performance of politician? South Canara is blessed with good natural conditions. There is no famine, no severe natural disaster. Majority people are happy with themselves, so do politicians ! If people wanted, their leaders could have taken Mangalore to greater heights. Mangalore culture is unique n evolved through many years. Peaceful coexistence of diverse ideas, faiths. People closely knit with nature. Cultural identity of South Canara is a matter of pride for us. People like Veerendra Heggade are excellent example – respected by all people. Acceptance by people comes from pure heart and pure mind. It is satisfying to note that society still recognizes values like honesty, truth.

For showing right direction to Mangalore, J.R. Lobo is ideal person. Best wishes to you sir.

Who said a good person cannot be a good politician ? Is it necessary that a politician must wear white dress n surrounded by few payed-goons all the time? Some pay money to get followers, People like Justice Santhosh Hegde, Baba Amte earn followers by silently working for needy in their best ability. Many politicians advertise a lot about themselves by faking n through double standards, will never show their face to people after getting elected. Everything needs training and an opportunity, so do politics. Who are those people getting panicked n threatened by honesty, commitment, integrity of Mr.J.R.Lobo ? Well, you have an answer ! People need to be wise to choose a person who might be there for them all the time. In India, quality of a vote (or voter) doesnt matter, it is the quantity of votes ( can be doctored, purchased by fooling innocent public by crook means) that play havoc and cause severe damage to society - completely changes future direction of society. Many film stars good in ACTING becoming chief ministers by sheer popularity through entertainment media ! It is ironical - but thats how indian people like to elect their representatives!

Jealousy is at display when someone like Mr.J.R. Lobo, who has earned respect, credibility n love of people through sheer honesty-hardwork for good causes of humanity, enters into politics. Why he entered politics now ? As a government official he proved what is his conviction. His work and integrity as public servant earned him love of people. People want him to give a try at politics. Now why politics? We all know, in India, politician is the boss - real constitutional power is with voters n their representative. We know what a politician does when he is at disposal of power and public money - their first thought is to swallow it. They do not think of the real meaning of PUBLIC MONEY. They fail to serve public without bias n favor.

I sincerely wish Catholic's wouldnt join politics, but do what they have been doing in the past. Building India through education, medical care, Orphanages, social service and the like.

If individuals want to involve themselves in politics is ok.

But letting the religion to support the individuals is a big mistake.

Very soon the catholics will be divided, enimities will start in parishes, and catholics will destroy their own peace

The entire gamut of pompous announcements then the resignation, the entry and the felicitation seems to me all a part of staged script. I see no inch of humbleness and sincerity in this politically coloured act. Surely the other candidate will beefit from the raucous created by the entire scenario....

I am sure BJP will retain the Mangalore MLA seat and rightly do so. We are not able to set our house right and we think of ruling the state! Mr Lobo might be a upright, honest and popular ex government servant. He is yet to prove himself in politics. There are many honest people who can not even win a Panchayath election.

I wish good luck to Mr Lobo, but in mean time we can not deny the fact that even Ivan Dsouza has a good voters base even if he stands as independent then it will be a cake walk for BJP.

Let us not fight among ourselves and divide the votes. Let Suresh Ballal be the next MLA candidate and we can try to get a MLC seat :)

Whoever it is LOBO or Dsouza, they can't win against BJP candidate.

I feel congress should field both these candidates from the same constituency to keep both of them satisfied. One should contest with the symbol LEFT HAND and another with RIGHT HAND.
