Mangalore: Morning Mist Home Stay Owner to Sue Women's Commission Chief

Mangalore: Morning Mist Home Stay Owner to Sue Women's Commission Chief

Ronald Anil Fernandes
Deccan Herald

Mangalore, Aug 5 (DHNS): The proprietor of ‘Morning Mist’, Loretta R V Rebello, is contemplating a defamation suit against State Women’s Commission Chairperson C Manjula for the latter’s remarks, during her visit to Mangalore on August 1 and 2.

Speaking to Deccan Herald on Saturday, Rebello said the women’s commission chairperson has defamed and tarnished her image by issuing statements to media giving the impression that immoral and illegal activities were taking place at the homestay.  “I belong to a traditional Catholic family and have been the president of the prestigious ladies club which fights for just causes,” she said and added that the mental agony and trauma she has been undergoing ever since the infamous attack on youth in her property, is beyond explanation.

Stating that the women’s commission chief has defamed, harassed and victimised a woman belonging to a minority community with an intention to tarnish her image before the members of the public and media, Rebello said she may reconsider her decision only if the person concerned apologises in the same forum / platform which she used to defame / tarnish her image. She also regretted that the women’s commission chief, instead of protecting the women, has demanded a probe against the mother of one of the victims, who is no way linked to the incident, and deviated from the very purpose of the commission’s visit.

Reiterating that her facility is not a ‘homestay’ as defined by the tourism department, she said that she has been promptly paying the taxes as applicable.

‘Pre-planned’

Terming the attack “pre-planned” and “hidden agenda” of a few people, Rebello also alleged that Corporator Mohan Padil had demanded Rs 10,000 from her for “pooja,” but she had paid only a sum of Rs 6,000.

Though Padil was initially picked up by the police soon after the incident, he was released later. Referring to a government notification dated July 12, 2007, which states that any inspection of a homestay, if the authorities consider ‘Morning Mist’ as a homestay, by any government agency will have to be authorised by the district magistrate, Rebello said that none of the government agencies have complied with the notification.

Noting that several people including State women’s commission chairperson have entered ‘Morning Mist’ without any authorisation from district magistrate, Rebello said she does not have any alternative, but to initiate legal action against government agencies for illegally trespassing into her property.

HI, SHASHI WHY CAN'T YOU OPEN YOUR EYES LIVING IN A COUNTRY WITH ALL RESPECT AND LAWS BUT ALLOWS EVEN DETERIORATION OF HUMAN VALUES? WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THIS THAT A HANDFUL OF YOUTH COULD NOT ENJOY AN EVENING BIRTHDAY PARTY? YOUR COMMENTS ARE TOTALLY HYPOCRITICAL. DODDANNA DAMASKATTE

I am truly surprised at Shashi's comments, especially since he is writing from Canada, one would have thought he would be more civil-minded. What one does within the fours walls of their home or private residence is their own business. How a person dresses, behaves, spends their money (all within reason) is their own business. Shashi would you dare walk into a private residence in Canada and vandalise the property and terrorize people for whatever reason? That is why there are laws and we need to leave the policing to the police not to bandits. I suppose you can take the Shashis out of the gutter but you can't take the gutter of of the Shashis!

I used to see Manjula in TV debate using her big mouth. She is unfit to be WC chairman. She does not know Constitution of India and I think even minimum knowledge of law.She was a BJP worker and was asked to deliver the message to press dictated by BJP!Trespassing, illegal entry to private property and issuing a degraded statement against owner of the property with out credential proof also makes her answerable in the court of law if owner sues her.WC must shamed of taking victims mother's name out of context.Yet,KESARI BRIGADE keeping silent?

I feel the problem with the entire incident here is the Civilized previleged class and the uncivilized under previleged class being unable to mix. There is a wide gap between the educated and well to do masses and the under educated not so well to do folks.

We have to accept that there is a problem both masses accepting each other. Politicians have very well learnt how to misuse people like Munna (prime accused) to gain political mileage and fool some of us.

Woman's commission chief speaks against woman n supports attackers. Well said Rebello, just wait for any action, this case will haunt the HJV for long. Mohan Padil is a crook, he should have behind the bar. These attackers Subash Padil, Taranath Padil may be his relatives.

There is mention of a Govt notification dated 12 July 2007 regarding inspection of a homestay as authorised by the district magistrate. Somewhere else there was mention that only 3 homestays in the whole of DK have been authorised. Can someone please give the whole Govt notification on this forum so that the public is aware of the rules.

I think the mastermind behind this attack is Mohan Padil who initiated such an attack for not receiving his Pooja (hafta) fees. Second mistake from Mohan Padil is he did not discuss this issue with the BJP leaders and must have never dreamt that it would take a reverse attack against him. I am sure, soon these goons will open their mouth who had instructed them to attack the youth.

You were responsible to check your guests before check-in at your Home stay, you should have appointed Manager,Security guard and maintained Register with Details of Your Guests for your safety, you must have placed cameras at your Home stay, to confirm whats happening at your Home stay while you were away,You have not taken permission /Licencee from M.C.C Tourism Dept. Now why you blame others for your Mistake ?....Why Madam Why?

SHASHI STAYING CANADA ACCUSED MRS REBELLO OF PLAYING A MINORITY CARD. IF MRS. REBELLO IS LEGALLY OWNING AND LEGALLY DOING BUSINESS WHAT SHASHI HAS TO SAY FROM CANADA? OF COURSE HOTELS AND MOTELS ARE USED BY THOSE WHO HAVE MONEY BECAUSE THEY WANT TO ENJOY A TIME AWAY FROM THEIR HOME AND ENVIRONMENT. NOTHING WRONG ABOUT IT.

WHAT OF CANADA NO HOTELS MOTELS WHERE PEOPLE DO NOT GO TO ENJOY? CANADA HAS BEEN MOST LIBERAL COUNTRY WITH REGARD TO SUCH THINGS AND SHASHI NEED NOT WRITE MORAL LESSONS TO US INDIANS. WE KNOW WHAT TO DO AND WHAT NOT AND THOSE RAFIAN GOOONDAS NEED NOT BE MORAL POLICE ON SUCH OCCASIONS. IF THERE WAS SOMETHING IMMORAL GOING ON THEN WHY ON EARTH WE HAVE THE POLICE? IF IN CANADA SUCH GOONAGIRI WERE TO HAPPEN THEY WOULD SACK SUCH GOONDAS AND PUT IN JAI PERMANENTLY OR IF THEY ARE INDIANS THEY WOULD BE DEPORTED FOR GOOD. DODDANNA DAMASKATTE

I am very happy to read what the owner of the property has said & I wish her all the best in putting these political appointees in their place.
Is this all done because the person owning this property took the authorities to the cleaners in another matter not too long ago?
Is this all bacause she did not agree to pay "hafta" to politicians as she claims?
Why is the national Women's Commission not coming into the picture (everyone knows that state level appointees are just mouthpieces of the ruling party of the time)- I hear from authoritative sources that among the students at the premises when they were attacked were from other states?
Why are we not being told by the media what is the background of this C Manjula and when she was given this post.
Lastly are we to believe that the police top brass (ADGP) statements are all Bunk and that the SWC overrides them?
