Mangalore, Aug 11: "The report submitted by the state Women's Commission chief Manjula on the recent attack on home stay is biased on most of the facts and holds the victims at fault," said F T R Colaco, IPS and retired director general of police.

He was speaking as the chief guest at a seminar on 'Moral Policing – a Blot on Indian Democracy' organized at the Eric Mathias Hall, St Aloysius College here on Friday August 10.

"Every individual has a doubt whether the Women's Commission chief is really protecting the rights of women or supporting the party she belongs to," he said.

Speaking on moral policing, he said, "Moral policing is an emerging trend all over the country, and especially in Mangalore. No one has the right to point out at any practice terming it is against one's culture, as is happening day after day."

Colaco said that religion has been mixed up with politics and this has divided the society. "This is the main reason for all instances of communal violence," he said, adding that political parties are dividing the society for vote bank.

St Aloysius College principal Fr Swebert D'Silva said that the people of Mangalore are really saddened by the recent incident. "The attack was truly barbaric, causing harm to peace and harmony in the society."

"If we think culture as static one cannot progress in life. People who indulge in moral policing do not have any idea about culture," he added.

He also pointed fingers at the government and the police and said that they are not efficient in their duty, and as a result, people have lost confidence in them. "Even the media do not perform their duties well," he further stated.

Fr D’Silva stressed on freedom as an important part of a person’s development. "Freedom is very essential, but it does not mean licence to act behind our limits," he said, "Let us condemn these incidents and make Mangalore a better place," he declared.

The audience also raised their concerns about the recent attack with the chief guest.

Marjorie Texeira welcomed the gathering.

The seminar was jointly organized by the Catholic Association of South Kanara (CASK), women’s forum and human rights cell of St Aloysius College and by All India Catholic Union Federation (AICUF).

The seminar was compered by Tania.

Fr Francis Almeida, SAC campus minister, Dr Derek Lobo, president of CASK, David Pais, secretary of CASK, Judith Pinto, vice-president of women’s forum, Roshni Rao, John D’Silva and Suman D’Silva and others were present.

Stephen, You have hit the nail right on the head. We Mangaloreans no longer offended by these comments even though these are terms actually amount to outraging women's modesty and amount to eve teasing. We as a society are failing today to understand that we do have our sister, mothers and daughters facing the similar fate in the public and engage in it.

ISMAIL.K.PERINJE, PERINJE-YANBU/KSA i havent supported the people who watched porn videos. I am not like you who give so many excuses in support of your corrupt political party congress. The problem with the people like you is that you always wait for some news about hindu outfits sitting in abroad countries. Also remember there are many other problems which our country is facing which our country is still unable to solve and people like you are more concerned about church attack and pub attacks. I dont say that BJP is perfect party, but definately much better than your corrupt political party congress. The problem with the congress is that before looking into their own house they are always busy pointing out their fingers at others. Also please advise your congress support paid media channels to be impartial towards political parties, religions and come out with the actual truth what they see and not on the basis of political parties or religion whom they support. Also how do you say that Manjula madam is wrong?? Do you have any proof for that.

You want to what is culture ?
Just stay in Magalore for 2-3 weeks & make some time pass in any of the bus stands & travel by services buses. You can hear words like "Piece edde undu", "yenchina maal maraya","auntina figure toolaya" - this is what culture is all about... and the people who talk this words can be seen in Samajotsavas or part of some of the extremist outfits !!!

But it should be known that another Mangalorean Mrs Margaret Alva ( Former Union Minister & presently Governor of Rajasthan ) has spoken before the UN General Assembly in 1990, the House of Lords, London in 1994 and the French Parliament in 1995 on Women's issues incl . women's rights.

My Comments are not negative but the Media story itself is negative .If Daiji really wants to highlight Coastal Karnataka news to the world then positive news like RAVINDRANATH KAMATH from Ujire has given a Lecture in London Parliament is a great news .One of the rarest honour for a Mangalore born Indian would have been more importance than this type of Propaganda against WC Chief Madam Manjula

    Dear Durgadas,
Where were those goondas/hooligans who act as moral police when ministers watching blue films in the assembly. When the scantily dressed and some ugly love scenes and stories created and acted to spoil the young minds why your culture enjoy those movies and give reward to those. Where are your cultured people to stop ugly internet sites? and Why such ugly movies, sons etc broad casted to spoil the mind of our children and young generation. Think practical and see where it is going wrong to cut it at the buds then to blame the young generation whos minds are very sensitive for all these tempatations. Who is the cause of all these? Why are all cultured women not protesting all these. If you allow all these to continue tomorrow even your children may go wrong way and it will be too late. That time taking side of political party or religion no use. How good you were when you are young? Check your conscious.

Thank you Mr. F. T. R. Colaco for the frank speech and making the right noice being forthright. This lady Manjula is the mouth-piece of the BJP and see can not see the reality because she is wearing coloured glasses. She can only see what she wants to see. How on earth she does not see that there was an attack by a group of goons on a private gathering? Who has given them authority to take the law into their hands? They are proving that the police & the home mninistry are toothless, ineffective or useless and rightly the police proved ineffective without dealing properly with the case. Why the police have not filed a proper FIR? Why the government needs to depend on the report of Women Commission Chief if there is an FIR?!!! It is rediculous!!!

Purpose of Women's commission chief was to assess the atrocities committed on Women and on their rights. Holding party in Mist home stay was right or wrong is different subject here. If she truly does not find any wrong done by the attackers on these partying Girls/boys, then she definitely needs thorough soul searching, like Whether she is doing justice to her job and women! Wait for Governments view and action, to whom people of the state have voted to power to uphold the law of the land. Disciplined Government/Party will be compelled to act as deterrent to the offenders and dis-associate themselves from law breakers Otherwise people will realize that lawbreakers are associated/ shielded! Its impact will be very serious in the years to come! They will always be breeding and associated with of law breakers, sure way to invite trouble to themselves!

The student community and the elite in our society do organise more Seminars and Dharnas until Manjula is dismissed from the prestigious Karnataka Women Commission's post.
She has no moral right to remain in that post as she is biased and a Govt puppet. All the likeminded Mangaloreans should fight the biased and corrupt system till she is removed from that position she has misused and still enjoying on our expenses to favour the Sangh Parivar assaulter goons than the battered young women victims.

Moral policing should be totally banned. It is the duty of the police to check and take action on these illegal home stay activities. Those rawdies who attacked girls and boys should be severely punished. Thanks to CASK for bringing up this issue to higher level. Here I see only one minority community is voicing too much as if they are the guardians of this type of western culture and rest of the people and media have forgotton this incident. A very good initiative by SAC which has known a college with the difference. I am proud Aloysian today and wish college extends similar discussions on other burning issues such as corruption, nepotism, awareness of laws in general public and other social causes. It is better that our younger generation are guided correctly before they venture out to the world which today is solely run by materialistic achievements and has ignored ethics in life.
