Puttur, Aug 15: A priest, belonging to Kerala-based Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, was taken into custody for insulting the Tricolour at the Bishop’s House, Parladka, Puttur here on August 15. He was charged with hoisting the National Flag in an improper manner.

When the bishop was away, the assistant priest Fr Vincent reportedly unfurled the Flag to mark Independence Day. However, the 'flag post' had a Cross at the top and the Tricolour was not fixed as per the required method.

It is also learnt that a clothesline (used for drying clothes) was used for hoisting the Flag.

The incident has provoked a few eyebrows. The priest has been taken for interrogation by the tahsildar.

Puttur town police have registered a case.

Indian model GEHANA is using the Indian National Flag as her bikini. But no protest from so-called PATRIOTISTS. In Mangalore everyone is doing some drama just for the cheap publicity. Let's be a true and genuine Indian to protest the social evils like poverty, illiteracy and unemployment let's build a strong and an integrated INDIA.

This is totally a double standard, and arresting the Priest for his improper manner, may be his lack of experience in hoisting flag does't deserve his arrest. This arrest by the police is worse than the street rowdism conducted on a daily basis by the street goons in Karnataka!

If the flag hoisting is done means no doubt it is done with great honour and respect. The flag post is old, permanent, and designed in such a way to use it for all occasion.Flag hoisting is happening there every year and no one noticed or if noticed not informed to the concerned authorities to correct the error.Poor priest became victim of it. When we are celebrating such a joyful event let us not make a fuss of it and go to the extent of charging the person to show him what mistake he has done.Instead of taking him into custody thashildar could have called him and solved the issue amicably.Flag is the symbol of our nation and it should be treated with great respect. Mandatory teaching the importance of how to handle the national flag in every educational institutions will avoid such unforeseen incidents.

Christian love this nation more than any one else. We are the people who fought with Christians to have independence to our country. Every year we go to church on 15th Aug it's obligatory. After the mass we hoist flag and salute the flag. So called fake dish premis sleep till mid day enjoying holiday. This is mistake Fr. Was not knowing the norms and mistake. At least he wanted to hoist our flag and not Pakistani flag as RSS did in Bijapur. No action from police yet. Those crying foul not even know how we must stand during national anthem. Even the style of salute what degree the palm should be but in convent schools everything is taught. God bless India.

Yes we all must have highest respect for our national flag, and it is the job of the government officials or the press to publish the protocol to be followed well in advance. In the past since my childhood I have seen lowering the flag after sunset (around 7:30PM) in many places. If that offence is ignorance how come this can be considered as deliberate act? I am sure a priest would never do it deliberately. A wrong cannot be corrected by any kind of argument and the offender has to pay the penalty and obtain a receipt.

Why is everything being taken in a religious point of view. The priest is an Indian first and a catholic/hindu/muslim second. Its time our society grows up. There are so many issues which have destroyed M'lore's reputation. Instead of bickering over something like this, lets educate our people.

Good Intention went with wrong proceedings here. Highest Authorities or Religious Leader or Celebraties are role model & many follow them or imitate them. So extreme caution is necessary. Wrong doing though unintentional, may mark a step which followers blindly follow. Rules is same for all, & so legal action is aggreable. Insult to National Flag, National Anthem, Currency of the nation, all are legal crime. At the time of penalising, it is necessary to instruct the correct way. Nation first - Religion next.
