Udupi: Myriad Colours Come Alive at Independence Day Celebrations

Udupi, Aug 15: District incharge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary graced the 66th Independence Day ceremony here on Wednesday August 15 and said that the BJP-led state government is giving importance to development not only in urban areas but in rural places as well.

Addressing a gathering of district officials, students, military units and the public, Poojary said that the government has sanctioned several projects on three basic aspects - economic, social and agricultural.

"Importance will be given to road development and even more to drinking water projects. Several projects have been initiated for the welfare of the poor," he said.

Giving statistical details, he said that 16,731 aged citizens had been given financial aid, and 42,724 had benefited from the Sandhya Suraksha Yojana. "As many as 20249 differently-abled persons were given various facilities, and 36,710 widow pensions were also disbursed. Altogether, 1,16,414 people belonging to the financially backward section benefited from these welfare schemes," he said.

"Under the Adarsha Vivaha Yojane, 40 couples were given amenities, 2,584 beneficiaries under the Bhagyalakshmi scheme were distributed bonds by the women and child welfare department. The health department identified 74 children under the Bala Sanjeevani Yojane and spent Rs 4.49 lac on their wellness. The department is also tackling the issue of malnutrition and poor health in children in the age group of 0-6 years, and the state is providing nutritious food and free medication in anganwadis," he said, adding that the government has provided the backward castes with hostel facilities, food, and tution fees.

"Under the Grameena Neeru Sarva Rajya Yojane, the government has already invested Rs 16.49 crore, and 458 pending works are being taken up at a cost of Rrs 33.96 crore. Rs 556 lac has been allotted under the rural road development project from the CM fund, and an additional Rs 555 lac more will be invested. Under the 13th Five Year Plan, Rs 576 lac was granted for road development, using which 331 roads were repaired," he said.

"As many as 6,783 application were received under the Basava Vasati Yojana housing plan. Of these, 2,149 houses have already been constructed and the rest will be taken up. Every constituency will have 2,000 houses under this plan, and a total of 10,000 houses will be built next near," Poojary informed.

"A sum of Rs 415 lacs was spent on 225 self-help groups in the year 2011-12. In agriculture, Rs 131 lac was provided to 2,135 people to cultivate their land. Already, 1,330 applications have been received for the next year. Rs 80 will be spent on 157 power tillers, and Rs 5.98 lac on mechanized ploughing machines," he said.

He also congratulated the SSLC and PUC toppers of this year and showered praises on the teachers and educational instiutions for taking Udupi's name to the top of results' lists.

"As many as 1,423 students belonging to the backward castes were provided scholaraships worth Rs 49.83 lac. SSLC students were given free books, uniforms and bicycles," he said.

"A sum of 2.70 crore was spent on dalits and koraga families for their welfare, inclduing health, education, electricity and employment," he said.

The state tourism department will take up a project to provide lodging facilities at Sri Krishna Math, and also intiate tourism development work at the Math. "In this regard, the Math authorities have been directed to give an estimation of the project," he said.

"Rs 2 crore has been sanctioned for the Koti Chennaya theme park Karakal, and more will be done soon," he said.

He said that 148 lakes have been rejuvenated, and the government is planning to invest an additional Rs 7 crore in future for the purpose.

"The families of those who lost their lives in the natural calamities that hit the district have been given compensation of Rs 1.50 lac each, and a total of Rs 4.50 lac has been distributed. The owner of a cow that died in the rains has been given Rs 50,000 as compensation," Poojary added.

SSLC and PUC toppers as well as volunteers of the event were felicitated on the occasion. Nine cultural programmes added colour to the celebrations. Around 15 to 20 different teams, including school bands and others participated in the march past.

    Watching the Independence Day pictures of last year, it is an emotional feeling to miss the charismatic Dr V S Acharya. Udupi would have developed beautifully by leaps and bounds by now.
