Anti-graft Political Party Won't Succeed in Elections: Santosh Hegde

Bangalore, Aug 20 (PTI): Former Supreme Court judge N Santosh Hegde says a political party floated purely on the anti-corruption plank will not succeed in elections at this stage as money power and diversity play a role.

Hegde, a former Karnataka Lokayukta, who has distanced himself from erstwhile Team Anna's decision to start a political party on October 2, said cultural, linguistic and religious diversity play a part in elections.

"It's not as if everybody looks at (elections) only from democratic point of view", he told PTI here. "People (sections of them) have got used to money being spent on them (in elections). It will take quite some time before we can change electoral attitude of the voters".

While anti-corruption plank is a good ground to fight elections, he is not sure whether one
can taste electoral success only on that issue in the next 10-12 years.

Hegde, a key member of the Team which was disbanded by its leader and social activist Anna Hazare recently, maintained that he is opposed to the idea of floating an all India party which is not "a child's play".

"To find 543-plus candidates for Lok Sabha elections is going to be a tremendous effort..", he said. While getting candidates in all constituencies would not be a problem as some people would definitely apply because of Anna Hazare's reputation, "what sort of people will apply is the question".

And how will they canvass without necessary infrastructure? Hegde asked.

Indicating that the proposed political party of erstwhile Team Anna may not succeed, Hegde said one should learn from history, as he referred to Swatantra Party and Praja Socialist Party which did not last long.

"If you want to bring about a change, it may have to be within the system itself", Hegde said.

He argued that instead of starting a political party, the erstwhile Team Anna should have approached the issue in a "much tactical manner" -- they could have fielded candidates in 10-20 constituencies where they had substantial support and sent them to Parliament.

"It will make a lot of difference".

"But then there are people who want quick results, that's a problem", Hegde said, in a apparent dig at some members of Team who are bent on floating the party.

But he stressed that in today's context, the elected representatives do not care for views of the people. "Today, which people's representative carries people's views into Parliament? Nobody does it".

On BJP leader L K Advani pitching for fixed terms and simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, Hegde said: "I agree with him because of the fact that expenses will be much less and national waste of time will be much less. On that practical point of view, I agree".

Present day common man is not so foolish. It is only because of the lack of choice, people have to vote for one of the candidates. Although the views of justice Hegde are correct, one should not get discouraged. Even if team Anna handpicks and fields 20 upright candidates, it will have the right impact.Justice Hegde, given an opportunity,do not hesitate to contest in elections.Believe in the power of common man and be a strong helping hand to tean Anna.Mass support is behind you!

Religion and caste is so important, even BJP is prepared to make compromise and play the game just to grab power and loot the country as it did in Karnataka. Then we shall have 5 Prime Ministers in 4 years.

Justice N. Santosh Hegde's comments about "Team Anna" floating a All India Political Party to get votes and get elected representatives to Lok Sabha is a Herculean task.

It's not impossible but not easy too!!! for "Team Anna" to manage resources like Infrastucture and Funds(Vitamin "M") for the electoral expenditure!!!.

It's better Team Anna take a U turn to fight the roots anti-curruption by joining hands with patience with like minded people which ever party or religion they belong to.

Good thinker. I am proud he is from DK. While DK is going to dogs because people are fighting for votes in the name of religion, cast and God! Time for vote seekers to dogs when young voters are educated and cast their vote.

JUSTICE HEGDE IS FORTHRIGHT IN HIS OPINION.
IT WILL BE DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE TO GET USED TO SOMETHING NEW ALL THAT SUDDEN.
IF THIS SECTION OF CANDIDATES GET VOTED TO POWER LOT OF COMPLICATIONS WILL ARISE.
VOID THAT WILL DEVELOP IN THE POWERFUL CORRUPT WORLD CAN BE DEVASTATING.
ALSO THE GUYS WHO MAY BE ELECTED ON ANNA PRINCIPLES MAY TAKE TIME TO GET USED TO THE BABUS WHO ARE SO POWERFUL AND RUN THE GOVERNMENT ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS.
WHATEVER IT WILL BE, BUT 2014 WILL BE A WATERSHED ELECTION AND WILL BE A FILTER GROUND TO ALL THAT WILL BE THROWN DOWN THE DRAIN.

Justice Hegde rightly said changes in the Indian electoral system may not come quickly, it may take some time. Intellectuals, students, farmers and like minded people should work together to bring a change and defeat the money power and the present rotten political system.

Yes sir, that is the reality.Anna team members like BEDI,IPS, AND KEJRIWAL IAS,not able to make it the pulse of electorate? Electoral politics is separate as it defends on caste, creed, money, infrastructure and language as said Justice Hegde.Anna team made ceasefire before war could be started. The main hurdles of ANNA teams are,too many leaders,Anna has lacking decision taking capacity, different subjects but not consistent in the core subject of Graft issue,Taking active support of political parties excluding one party, allying with controversial ORGS and PERSONS etc etc..By accident,Anna Team decides to contest LS election it may even loose DEPOSIT.

Yes sir, you have conveyed the truth. As expressed by you - Anna team can contest for elections in some constituency where they can make remarkable impact. Our voters not matured and money/caste politics / affection to some political party is playing a big role. The eminent writter Dr.Shivarama Karanth lost the elections in North kanara constituency.

What you said is absolutely correct Sir.

It is the voters who need to change first, then political parties. More than 50% of the voters sell their votes and later blame politicians for not giving roads, water, house etc.

Some politicians serve mass meal with chicken biryani prior to election. People will come, eat heavily and say "avana annada runa nanna melide. avanige nanna & nanna maneyavarellara vote hakalebeku"

Political parties serve liquors to people. People drink and shout "nanna vote avnige. nan obne saaku avananna gellislikke'

Also Saree, lungi, shirt, banian, money are given to people. On the election day voters are served free transportation to voting booth.

Our bedridden grand parents see the external world only on election day. Party people carry them and make them caste their vote. Next day if they fall ill, no party will come to help.

Everyone rallying behind Anna's team will realise this soon , Nation cannot be built or improve only by tackling graft , if that was the case other countries with less or Nil graft would have been number 1 by now , morever not to mention Anna's campain is ive in fighting graft , Who will address corruption at Grass root level , sitting in Delhi does not wipe of the bribe given at DC office , Mangalore while doing land and Marriage registration , people still flock behind this man thinking some thing good will happen . Their is No hope for an country divided on religion , region , Caste and tribe . Let the Nation go beyond this before it is too late

Yes, honorable N Santosh Hegde Sir, India such a vast country with diverse culture and religions and customs people have varied priorities and expectations. Most of the people desperately looking for good daily bread decent shelter and peaceful living. Some want quick infrastructure development, hygiene and improved living standard and some are looking for communal/regional strife free environment and security. In this scenario, if Shri. Anna Hazare's Party harping on only one issue of corruption, it may not touch the vast majority. They look at the record of other known parties also and over look it. The Party which understands that most of the people are still poor, address their basic need and focus more on employment generation by of infrastructure development, better governance etc. so that common people are not disturbed will surely going to benefit in the election.

It seems this man is a agent of Congress just like Swamy Agnivesh. Whatever Team Anna decides, this man always making comments on them. I had full respect for this man when he toppled BSY in Anti Crusade campaign. But now it seems he is indirectly supporting Congress by making above comments. Step by step people will realise which is good for them & for the nation if it is not now. Why this man commenting in a negative prospective? If not today, at least for tommorrow we can change... Be positive always.... when one independent can change everytihng in a democratic setup why not Team Anna if it gets at least 10 MP seats in a democratic country which is ruled by coalition setup???
