Bangalore, Aug 20: Senior journalist from coastal Dakshina Kannada district, Dinesh Amin Mattu, Assistant Editor of leading Kannada daily Prajavani, Bangalore, was conferred the State-level D Devaraj Urs Award by Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Monday.

The Chief Minister also presented Divisional level awards to eight persons/organizations.

Dinesh Amin Mattu, born in Mattu village near Mulky in Dakshina Kannada district, entered the journalism field in 1983 and had joined Prajavani in 1989.

Known for his incisive analysis on political developments at the national and state level, Dinesh Amin Mattu has won several awards for his writings.

The State-level award, which was instituted by the State Government in memory of the late chief minister D Devaraj Urs, carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.

The awards were presented by the Chief Minister at a function organised in the Vidhana Soudeha Banquet Hall to mark the 97th birth anniversary of late D Devaraj Urs.

The Bangalore Divisional level award winners are: Vishwakarma Ratha Shilpa Kala Sangha, Bangalore; Sri Sharadha Vidya Samsthe, Chitradurga; Narasamma of Tumkur. Narasamma (92) working for the betterment of poor women in rural areas.

The Belgaum Division awards were given to Bhimarao B Gasti, president of Uthana Samsthe, Khanapur, Belguam and Kashinath B Hudeda, Bagalkot, for their social service.

The Gulbarga division awards were given to Vajra Kumar B Kivade for his contributions in the field of health and social service and Basavanappa M Gounalli of Jewargi, Gulbarga district, in the field of social service.

The Mysore divisional level award was given to Deena Bandu Samsthe, Chamarajnagar, Mysore district for contributions in the field of education.

Shettar felicitated 16 students who secured highest marks in the SSLC and PUC examinations of 2011-12 by residing in hostels run by the Social Welfare Department.
