Mangalore, Aug 24:
The grand finale of the year long celebrations of 25 years of presence of women students on the St Aloysius campus was celebrated at the Eric Mathias Hall on Friday August 24.

The chief guest of the occasion Dr Ruth Manorama, president of the National Alliance of Women and winner of the Livelihood Award 2006, addressed the gathering saying that even though enough of constitutional provisions  exist, structural gender bias is also on the rise.

She added that economic growth is taking place only in the interest of capitalists and the ever widening communal intolerance should be condemned and social fabric should be retained. She added that women should enjoy freedom in a Swaraj country and morale policing must be condemned.

Speaking on the incident of the Home Stay attack , she said that both the state women commission report and that of national women commission was incorrect, hence an independent committee report should be accepted.

Fr Joseph Rodrigues, rector, St Aloysius Institutions delivering his presidential address said that coeducation replicates the atmosphere of a home.

Discussion and debate between ‘complimentary sex’ (he used the word instead of opposite sex) enhances the knowledge and that women teach the preliminary behaviours in life. He added that softness is the strength of women folk while a rational and intellectual approach is an inherited quality of men. He also said that women should be paid due respect as they are the source of compassion and spirituality.

A book shedding light on the 25 years of women students in the campus titled ‘Aloysia’ was released on the occasion.

Fr Swebert D’Silva, principal, St Aloysius College, Fr Francis Almeida, vice principal, St Aloysius College, Judy Pinto, convener of the programme among others were present.
