Bangalore: Approaching Polls Drive BJP, Congress into Confession Mode

Bangalore, Aug 25 (IANS): The ruling BJP in Karnataka and its main opponent, the Congress, are becoming experts in correctly diagnosing the ills plaguing them while groping in the dark for a solution as assembly polls approach.

Both the parties are torn by infighting which will only intensify as factions battle to gain prominence in the organization to grab maximum tickets for their members to fight the polls.

The polls are due in May next, but all three parties jockeying for power in the state - the BJP, the Congress and the Janata Dal-Secular - are gearing up for possible elections this year-end.

On the face of it, the Congress should be able to recapture power it lost in 2004 - though it headed a coalition government with the Janata Dal-Secular in 2004-06 -  as BJP's maiden rule in the state has been an unending story of scandals.

However, state Congress leaders are not sure of the party being in aposition to cash in on the opportunity because of lack of unity in the state unit.

With most of the Congress leaders merely mouthing that the state unit is united to face the polls, union Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge has chosen to be blunt to drive home the bitter truth.

"Infighting did us in the 2008 assembly elections," Kharge said early this week at a party function in Bangalore to mark the birth anniversaries of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and former Karnataka chief minister D. Devaraj Urs.

He should know as he was then the president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

The Congress won just 81 seats in the 225-member assembly, of which 224 are elected and one is nominated. The BJP won 110 seats and formed the government with the help of six independents. The JDS had bagged the remaining 27 seats.

Kharge said, without taking any names, that "our own party leaders" worked against official candidates.

Kharge's assertion about debilitating impact of factional fights comes against the backdrop of a determined bid by a section in the state Congress to unseat KPCC chief G. Parameshwara.

Playing the caste card, Lingayat leaders in the Congress want their own ilk to head the KPCC on the ground that this community, making about 17 percent of state's 65 million population, is largely backing the BJP because it is feeling neglected by the Congress.

State party treasurer and veteran state Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa, who is a Lingayat, has met Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi to seek the KPCC chief's post for himself.

The bait the Lingayat leaders have held out for the Congress leadership is that if Shivashankarappa helms the state unit theparty will win 150 seats in the polls.
Parameshwara is, like Kharge, a Dalit.

Like the Congress, the ruling BJP is a badly divided house with even the worst drought the state is facing in 40 years being used by its leaders to score over rivals in the state unit.

The BJP's first chief minister in the state, B.S. Yeddyurappa, who quit last July over mining bribery charges, leads one group. The other is led by D.V. Sadananda Gowda who lost the chief ministeship within a year of assuming it because of a rebellion by Yeddyurappa.

Then, there are sundry groups owing allegiance to Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, two deputy chief ministers, K.S. Eshwarappa and R. Ashoka, and another faction made up of legislators who were not made ministers.

In spite of the infighting and Yeddyurappa and around 20 others legislators, including some ministers, facing corruption cases, Eshwarappa, who is also state BJP chief, claims the party will win 150 seats in the coming polls.

At a press meet here Wednesday he acknowledged that the party had committed a mistake by depending on caste and money power to form the government for four years.
He blamed these legislators for spreading factionalism in the state unit and said "if they do not correct themselves, they will not get tickets this time."

However the BJP's problems are much more fundamental also - balancing various factions, even on a serious issue like drought relief.

The need to keep various factions happy has forced the party to form three groups to visit the drought-affected areas following Yeddyurappa's decision to go on such a tour from August 21.

This was seen by his rivals as a move to project himself as the sole leader of the party in the state.

To counter the move, the party formed two more teams - one under Sadananda Gowda and the other under BJP general secretary and Bangalore South Lok Sabha member H.N. Ananth Kumar.

Eshwarappa had a lame excuse, though, for this arrangement - since large areas are affected by drought, one team alone was not sufficient.

Really cannot understand why people are keen to bring back congress.Ofcourse we know because of misrule by Bjp the congress may get natural chance to be in power nexttime. But think a moment about congress credibility in past in the state .Which leaders will lead the state?.Is it Parameshwara or is it siddu?. We all know about their capacities and the role they performed as opposition leaders. They were simply pathetic and far below average. There are rumours some were even in the pockets of BJP. JD(s) has performed its duties suitabily and deserves a comeback chance and their trackrecord in past is much much better than others . Deve Gowda who destroyed jd(S) completely is too old and may not interfere again in future. kumara Swamy still has the charisma to lead Karnataka and is a able leader and can lead the state again successfully.

BJP though good in development, has a problem, not taking action on on some groups for minority bashing and hatred speeches even though it is against constitution.Due to which development gets negated.
Under present leadership in Karnataka, Congress is weak.
Not taking up corruption and un- resolved issues effectively. Corruption accusations are there on all the 3 major parties. In this scenario, this time JDS should get majority.

If you talk about state improvements/developments congress has no place at all in the game. Most of its CMS failed totally with corruption on its top those days. Though Yeddi tried to progress Karnataka due to corruptional tangle he fell into probably success was not upto expectations. As far as JD(S) yes there was definite concern towards poor in the state during their rule.

No doubt development during JD(S) Kumaraswamy was maximum in the areas dominated by them. Still people praise him. Kumaraswamy though corrupt is the leader of minorities and poor as its learnt from bangalore side areas. Even during JD rule during Hegde time JD proved to be the best party. If Kumaraswamy can clean up his house and pull some prominent leaders from BJP/Cong i think they can try their claim for power next in alliance with others. Both congress and BJP proved to be useless. Siddaramayya always putting his tongue out for power is not a suitable leader. How can somebody who failed as opposition leader become CM? Whats his achievent as opposition leader.

    Well said C Sharath,

All the way through my reading this article, I was wondering what a shame it is for us to discuss the outcome of polls based on population of Lingayats, Kurubas, Brahmins, Muslims, Christians. We were taught in schools of "Unity in Diversity" of our country. How much do we realize when we grow up that what our text books teaches us is so fake. Its really ridiculous that we predict our election results on the religion of the candidate contesting. But that is the fact, and will remain.

Recently I had been to Mangalore & Udupi on vacation, when I talked to people of Coastal Area, they still believe in BJP rule but fed up with their infighting rather than highlighting BJP scandals at State Government because they still believe that Congress is the Mother of all Scandals till date and Congress and JDS even tried to please minority communities with various promises but not succeed in implementing the same due to legal hurdles because which is termed as against the Indian Constitution. Same time Congress is having major problem while allocating tickets for MLA’s because they dig their own grave by Minority Card Play and now its became Caste and Religion issue while issuing tickets. If Congress try to issue tickets to Muslim Candidate, Christian become angry, if Christian Candidate then Muslims fury and finally Hindu means rebellion within Hindu by various castes, so chances of Congress coming back to power is very remote unless they make pre-poll adjustment with JDS which is not at all possible since “Appa, Maga” still believe in coming to power with their own strength in Karnataka. So I still believe BJP will come to power again because we have no other choice and have to choose “Best among Worst” only

I feel JD(S) is better than Cong and BJP. In JD(S) time I feel improvent Karnataka was maximum 75% development(BOTH By Kumara Swamy & RK Hegde time) .In the BJP rule there was development of hardly 25% only. Congress time there was hardly 5% development inspite of several years of ruling by Bangarappa,Veerappa,Gundu Rao all useless veterns .

Shahnawaz kukkikatte..Appriciated your politicalview ,right said, But Military intrevention is not the solution brother. The root problem is with us the people. Our minds are divided. We tend to form a opinion on people based ont heir caste & creed and political party they represent. we ourselves are divded. We talk about India but then again before that we think weather we are Hindhu, Muslim ro Christian, bhatta or Shudra, raadav or dhalit, protestant or Roman, Shia or Sunni, north Indian or south Indian, behari babu or madraasi anna or malbaari. The day we understand that our politicians are using this very basic simple mantra like British whcih is called "DIVIDE & RULE" to sit on our head sucking our blood & taking us for a ride, only then things can change. Today a temple proposes its belivers to vote BJP. Prayers are conducted in Church's and masjids for Congress's win askign its devotees to unite, then wehere is the future for our society when we are divided like this. No one supports a honest candidate, they only support the party he represents, then what can we accept from our democracy ?
Religion is something deep within us which cannot be removed and the politicins are using this as their trump card. As the Congress grip in the country loosened after Rajiv Gandhi, they realised somethgin shoudl happen to the country for us to stay in power. The result is Babri Masjid incedent. If BJP supported the demolition, Ruling Congress was equally responsible,a s they wanted BJP to do this and come out as a savior. If they wanted they could have stopped the activists from entering Ayodhya and today we dint have to go through all what India went through the Aftermath.Congress needed this India split so did BJP. Things went on as pland by the politicians and it is going on even today and will go on unless we realise our mistakes and unite and clear the garbage. If not ours atleast the future generation might live in better India.

Vincy, Bangkok...if you had made a little Background check on your Tippu sultan & the aftermath of Treaty of Mangalore in 1784 whcih resulted in mass Captivity of Mangalorean Catholics and what was the treatment given to them after that perhaps you would have changed your opinion. Tippu unlike SC bose or Bhagath Singh dint fight against british for the country, he fought to save Shrirangapattana which anyway was taken in coup by his father Hyder ali who was the militery officer in the Kingdom of Mysore. Yes We made 2 big mistakes and then histroy changed for ever in the peacefull country rich with culture. One was when King Zamorin wecomed Vascoda Gama in 1498 at calicut & another was the Rajpuths dint unite againt Babur in early 1500's as Hindhusthan untill then dint anticipate there could ever exisit a generation & culture rich of plunder, loot & Killings .Hidhusthan was peacfull land untill then & it belived in ATHITHI DHEVOBHAVA & welcomed these 2 people instead of fighting them. In the name of extending their colonies & apreading their religion they wrecked the cutule of this country. Long back it was Mughal's, Portugese & British, now its our own politicians are living in this " Unda Manege Kanna Haaku" attitude.

BJP government makes schemes to make money ... Witness the
Bangalore mayor getting allocated land in the guise of
"landless labourer" under the bagar hukum scheme. Inspite of
owning 30 acres of ancestral land in his village, he got land
allocated worth about 15crores ! When asked about he said
that minister Ashoka helped him get the allotment and Ashoka also
got land allotted under the same scheme ! This is the number
one land grabbing / denotification / illegal mining mafia government
in the country, which needs to be rooted out once and for all.
Also, there is a report that Somasekhara reddy used bribes from
his position as KMFchairman for bribing the judges in the
janardhan reddy judge bribery case. He allegedly gave order
for some items at a higher price of Rs.25 crore than the market
price and got money from this transaction and used it as bribe
money to bribe the CBI court judge. No wonder, milk prices
have been becoming unduely higher in the tenure of the BJP government...

So, your children will not get good and quality milk at reasonable
prices (due to Somasekhara reddy type people), your women folk at
home are not safe (due to Renukacharya / Halappa type of people) and
your land is not safe (due to people like Venkatesh Murthy / Ashoka/

We certainly dont need any elections. All parties and candidates are corrupt and criminals. We need militray rule for next 10 years to cleanse the rubbish. Aam aadmi is fed up and tired. We need electoral reforms and right to reject and right to recall. We need electoral reforms that mandates minimum qualification, age and maximum number of terms in the office. MLA or MP should not be the birth right of few and their family members. Good governance is possible if good and educated reperesentatives are elected. All political parties have proved their real colours and worthless values. BJP is appeasing majorities, promoting hate and devision and Congress is appeasing minorities and both are promoting corruption and dynasty culture. JDS is nothing but father n children drama...We do not have any alternative but to insist on militrary rule so that all corrupt leaders are sent to jail. Common man should lead a contended, peaceful life. Tax payers money should be spent on developments and for the welfare of masses. Our leaders are not worth human shit. No morale and no values in present day politics. We are becoming lawless African country...Its a dangerous sign...Voters should decide who is best for us in the larger interest without blindly following any party or ideologies. As per Wikileaks Congress has a Lions share in Swiss Deposits & that's the reason they are in underground fight with Anna Hazare team. Congress tops the rank in case of corruption & malupalation. Rahul has shown his ability in past election such as UP, wherever he went the party failed. Perhaps we have to wait for sometime to get a clear view, as there is still one year.

CAG would be releasing some more scams in coming days and It would be a advantageous to the BJP. recent survey predicted a decline to the Congress everywhere but little hope in Karnataka. Anyway Lingayath factor and Strong JDS would help the BJP to reatin close 85-90 seats and might need independence and BSR to form the government. As the wave is against UPA and pro NDA elsewhere in the country, everyone would support BJP in Karnataka. COngress leaders need to wait till 2018 to come back to power in Karnataka.

BJP has a big question to answer to the people who voted the BJP 4 years ago.Why they removed DVS?.Then your DVS lost his MP seat due to the process. He is not even a MLA now.Do you have a answer.

I feel congress shoud be given a change but we need a CM like SM Krishna.
JDS can go to any extent we saw that in bjp-jds coalition. BJP looted the state openly.

Congress ruled is best under SM Krishna

Whoever barks against whoever now, it will be JDS the king makers in next elections in Karnataka. I can forsee Revanna as the next CM of Karnataka whcih is H D Devegowdas ultimate aim or if not its HDK. With the current scene in the state, is of all the leaders in line HDK is the only person that can bring some farmer freindly policies and save our state. Good politicians like YSV Datta & MC Naaniah should make a good cabinet along with few honest either in BJP or Congress whoever is doing the marrige, but it is better for the state if the nooze is in the hands of any other people than congress or BJP.
Whatever it is , one cannot ignire force JDS in the coming elections.

It could be hung Assembly having largest numbers of MLAs for Cong.Apart from that,if unfortunately Yeddi snaps marriage with BJP then again uneven fractured mandate in Karnataka could be possible and may creat Karnataka @ chaos politically once gain.Predictions for year 2013 Assembly election.

    CONGRESS....100to 110 MLAs

    JDS..........30 to 40 MLAs

    BJP w/ Yeddy 70 to 80 MLAs

BJP WITH OUT YEDDI)only 35 MLAs

    BSR Cong(Ramulu)4 to 7 MLAs

Rest is independent and others. If situation takes drastic change in BJP and Congress there might be change in the figure and BSY is tilting point in Coming Assembly result.

Its better not to Vote any body in coming election.

We need President rule. for atleast 2 years. to clean all the scams done by the each and every party.

Better not to Vote this season. we do not have faith on any Party member. Bycott the Election, bring the president rule for Karnataka. and Save public money. People think about future please.

Congress has the additional probelm that Central Govt is facing serious corruption allegations like 2G ,CWG,Coalgate etc .That will dent the imgage of Congress in the state and hence I feel in 2013 elections BJP will have 124 ,Congress 70 ,JDS 25 and BSR Congress and independents 6
