Bangalore, Aug 28: As many as 5 lac drivers of private commercial vehicles are proposed to be covered under the State Government sponsored private commercial vehicle drivers accident relief scheme during the current year.
 
Under the scheme, the premium amount will be borne by the State Government while all registered beneficiaries will not be required to pay the premium amount .
 
To avail the benefit under the scheme, the eligible drivers, however, will have to pay a one-time fee of Rs 25 and get themselves registerd with the Unorganised Workers Social Security Council.
 
Application forms are available with the Labour Department offices. Drivers of any private commercial vehicles are eligible to cover under the scheme.
 
Karnataka’s Labour Minister B N Bache Gowda, who chaired a meeting of the State Unorganised Workers Social Security Council, said 36,000 drivers of private commercial vehicles have registered their names under the scheme since it was launched in the state 2011-12.

The State Government had earmarked Rs 2 crore for its implementation. The target for coverage during the year 2012-13 has been fixed at 5 lac private commercial vehicles drivers.

The minister said the beneficiaries would get an insurance cover of Rs2 lac e against death and suffering deformity either permanent or temporary disability sustained in any fatal road accidents.

The Council had also reviewed the progress on the implementation of the “Janasri Insurance Scheme” intended to provide social and economic security cover to those who are working in the unorganised sector in over 45 segments.

The State Government has earmarked about Rs 10 crore for the effective implementation of the scheme under the budget for the financial year 2012-13, the minister said.
