Mangalore, Aug 29: Kerala every year gets into the grove of celebrations as the harvest season begins. Mangalore also stepped into the mood with colleges, establishments and institutions all over the city celebrating the harvest festival.

Throughout the week, celebrations of all kinds were held. Colleges organised various competitions like the best pookalam (flower arrangement), dances, singing etc.

The Classic apartments located at Mallikatta were decorated with full Onam fervour.

Joyalukkas, one of the city’s leading jewellery stores joined in the festivities. The jewellery stores were decorated with beautiful flowers and lights.

In the 60s and 70s the North Indians in general, ignorantly, used to refer all South Indians as Madrasi. Definitely, that used to hurt the South Indians, including i.
I recollect youngsters call their close friends and others, just to taunt Malayalis, call them Mallus but it is not appropriate to call all the Malayalis that includes even elder statesmen, by the slang word Mallu, that too in a common platform like Daijiworld.
I personally disagree with Mr. Rakesh's way of wishing the Malayalis in general. We should first learn to give respect than expect the same from others. We have to learn so many things from the established Japan and the developed West in the matter of mannerism.

This speaks of the richness of Mangalore.
A true model city to prove unity amidst diversity.
Secular city - Where all religions are tolerated.
Linguistic city - Where different languages are spoken.
Followers of mixed culture of Aryan and Dravidian origin _Clothing, ornaments, food etcMangies, Mallus, Gujjus,Punjus all joining together in
    celebrations of different
    festivals.
Where else you will find such a beautiful city in our country?
My dear Kerala students, just like how you have taken pains to draw this beautiful POOKALAM with the collection of petals from different flowers with different colours, before you leave Mangalore draw a pookalam in your minds with the collection of the petals of different languages spoken in Mangalore to remember the happy days that you spent in this rich city.
    HAPPY ONAM

Why is it so difficult to identify a person coming from Kerala as a malayalee. The shortened version ( mallus) is derogatory to all malayalees. Neither caste, culture or religion come s into it, rather respect for a person coming from a particular state.. Referring to a person in a careless nonchalance way is acceptable but wishing a sect of people scattered all over the world is certainly not

Mangi/Mallu/Nigger etc were originally intended to derogatory. When a person refers to himself/herself as those words it is usually intended to be humorous.

Usually it is not acceptable and will cause hurt and anger when it is used by a person not of the same community.

Akshatha, Dubai,Please clarify what is the insult in the world "GOWDA". It shows your "koopa manduka". Gowda is the sername for "Vokkaligas". In Karnataka Vokkaliga are the 2nd major & upper comunity.(after Lingayuta). It gave 1 prime Minister and 4 CMs (SMK,HDK,DVS,Deve gowda ..).
Even in D.K Vokkaligas are the major comunity in Sullia,Puttur,Belthangady and Vittla. But they are less in number in Mangalore and Ullala and Udupi.
    Please improve your knowledge.
So what you ppl are calling gowda for Bijapura & rayachhur Ppl is wrong and it shows your limitations.

Mallu, Mangi, Punju, Gujju......etc are quite cool and popular expressions amongst we young, hip, educated crowd. My Punjabi friend refers to herself as "we Punjus". I call myself a "Mangi". My friend from Kerala uses "me, a Mallu" phrase very often.
Mr.Jaimin, please watch the program “Love Bites” on NDTV Good Times presented by Joey Matthew, an international model from Kerala. She refers to herself as a “Mallu” many a times in her program. She has popularized Kerala recipes and expressions amongst non-mallus.

Happy Onam every one. Was going through the comments I guess Jaimini was referring to Nagesh Shetty's comments and not Rakesh's. Few words to Rakesh - We are all humans first and learn to respect a fellow individual. You are known by the person you are and not by the religion. Mangalore and the people are one of the nicest and friendly people I've known. Do not mix religion and factionalism in everything you see. Shettys are considered to be descendents of Kshatriyas. So speak and think like a warrior and not a loser. Tulu is not just spoken in Mangalore, even parts of north Kerala speak the language. So do not throw the Tulu nadu rhetoric back at me. Hope better sense prevail. Happy Onam to you once again.
