Udupi: Maid Caught for Stealing Gold Ornaments Worth Rs 3.5 Lac

Udupi, Aug 30: A maid servant employed in a house near Alive Kodi beach in Thenka Yermal was arrested on Thursday August 30 for stealing Rs 3.5 lac worth of gold from the house.
The house belongs to Shashidhar Shetty, a businessman. The theft took place on Wednesday August 29 night.
Six people, including Shashidhar's sister Sumathi and her husband Shekar Shetty stay in the house.
As much as 18.5 sovereigns of gold ornaments valued at around Rs 3.5 lac and Rs 2000 in cash was allegedly stolen by maid Basamma Ramanna (35), a resident of Bagalkot
Basamma has been arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
The incident came to light when Shashidhar went to bedroom to retire for the night, after watching TV and having dinner. The police was informed soon after.
A 'Karimani', pearl chain and 4 bangles, all weighing 5 sovereigns, 3.5 soverign of bangle and two thousand rupees in cash were found in a plastic bag that was kept inside the cupboard in the bedroom.
Padubidri circle inspector, Shivanand Valikar, SI Mahadeva Shetty and team visited the spot and carried out further investigations. Basamma was interrogated in the beginning, but in vain.
On Thursday morning she admitted to the theft when DYSP Jayanth Shetty detained her for questioning. She returned the stolen articles that she had stored in a metal box in the house. It is said that she had been employed in the house a year ago and had won everyone's trust.
A case has been registered in the Padubidri police station.
