Kundapur, Aug 31: While most fishermen are worried about shortage of fish breeds in the sea, those in Shiroor Alvegadde have a different concern - that of improper maintenance of its fishing dock.

The demand for the renovation and further development of the dock has been placed before the department concerned time and again over the last three decades. But every season, the fishermen are left to suffer due to the non-fulfillment of their demands.

Recognized as one of the prime natural docks in the district, Alvegadde dock has a history dating back to almost a century. Senior citizens in the area recall that the dock was a major business centre during the times of British and Haduvalli Samsthanam, when 25 to 30 ships were said to have been anchoring at this harbour.

The area houses 575 Mogaveera families who are dependent on fishing for their livelihood. In 1968, the then government had kindled hope and trust in the people by developing the natural harbour.

But as time passed, the place was neglected, and the condition of the ice factory, the living rooms and the harbours has been getting worse and deteriorating gradually with each passing day.

As per the promises made by MPs and MLAs of the region at the time of elections, the legislative assembly had announced funds worth Rs 9.7 crore for the development of this dock. However, no effort has been made in this direction so far, say local fishermen.

At present, the Alvegadde harbor remains badly damaged. Even as the fishing season returns, the underwater mud and slime remains as it is.  As the water is filled with heavy mud, the boats have a tough time reaching the sea through this dock.

There are a total of nine boat construction centers here. Recently, a newly constructed boat that was on its way to Malpe was damaged due to the underwater mud, incurring a heavy loss worth lacs.

There is a dire need for the officials to take this matter seriously and to utilize the funds announced in the right manner.
