Udupi: Restored Kattingeri Pond Inaugurated

Udupi, Sep 2: Kattingeri pond, reconstructed under the chief minister's lake and pond restoration programme, was formally inaugurated here on Sunday September 2.
The programme was organized by department of minor irrigation, Udupi subdivision and Moodubelle gram panchayat, and Lions Club.
In the previous year scarcity of drinking water was a major issue in the district. The government is now implementing various schemes and projects to prevent scarcity of water in the coming years. As a part of this programme, Kattingeri pond was restored over the last two years at a cost of Rs 31 lac. Walls have been constructed around the pond as part of maintenance.
Students of St Lawrence College held a march past on the occasion. Religious rituals were also performed.
Speaking on the occasion Kaup MLA Lalaji Mendon said that rainwater harvesting should be followed everywhere including in small villages.
Fish were let into the pond and saplings were planted around it.
Udupi taluk panchayat president Devdas Hebbar said that Kattingeri was a memorable place where renowned artist K K Hebbar had started his works. On account of K K Hebbar’s 100th birthday, the pond has been reconstructed in his memory, he said.
ZP president Katapady Shankar Poojary, ZP member Ida and others were present.
