Kasargod, Sep 3: An inter-state thief who was accused in more than 50 cases of theft in Kerala and Karnataka has been arrested by the Palakkad police.

Raju alias Thangaraju (59), a resident of Muriyanavi, Kasargod, is the arrested. A native of Tamil Nadu, he had settled down in Kasargod 40 years ago.

Acting on information received, police arrested him from Chennai where he was taking refuge.

He had been earlier arrested for committing 28 thefts in Udupi, and was released on bail in 2011. He was staying at Palakkad ever since.

Raju used to run a tea shop in Udupi court premises and steal at night. He absconded after allegedly looting jewellery worth Rs 2.5 crore in Kushalnagar in Karnataka.

Palakkad police have confirmed that he has stolen 85 sovereigns of gold ornaments from 12 places in Palakkad district.

It is said that he was involved in several theft cases in Udupi, Madikeri and other places. Police sources said that he has stolen jewellery worth crores. Interestingly, he committed all the thefts alone, without any accomplice.

He bought land worth crores in Palakkad and other places with the money he accumulated after selling the stolen ornaments.

He was also involved in a theft of 36 gold coins, 46 sovereign gold and mobile from a house belonging to Usha, a teacher in Chandranagar, Palakkad. He sold all the ornaments to a jeweller in Erode, Tamil Nadu for Rs 8.5 lac.

He was also using the mobile that he had stolen. On tracing this mobile, the police found that he was in Chennai. The police then raided a lodge there and rounded him up.

He was later prouced in court. "More will be revealed after he is taken into police custody," said R Ashokan, Kasaba station circle inspector, Palakkad.

Be careful in future handling any transaction near the court and taluk office.

Here everybody talking about his ability as a thief. Nobody bother about incapability of police force. Stealing ornaments worth crores of rupees in 50 odd cases and till today he was free. once he arrested after 28 theft cases and released on bail without punishment. That is encouraged him to steal 22 times more without fear. WHA'RE INDIAN LAW AND ORDER.
This case same as pub attack and Homestay attack. After the pub attack subhash padil did not get any punishment that leads to homestay attack.
    Hope history will not repeat.

Intelligent thief? But cellphone is spoilsport to him. Therefore,Cellphone is the most dangerous gadget for law breakers.
KRPRABHU,MANGALORE?BANGALORE,Such kind of crorepati thieves are many in numbers which you might not come across.Read print, electronic and visual media consistently you will get it.Due to gold price skyrocketing on daily basis, the amount of theft will be manifold which is another reason.Interestingly, this particular thief invested in land which could be retrieved with interest.

There was a time when 20K cash deposited in the bank account had to publish the PAN. How come the land he purchased in crores did not attract IT eyes? I think IT will only trouble salaried class for petty things!

Whatever, I'm sure he is a very small fry in front of the national looters who have hoarded billions in SWISS Bank.

He has enjoyed his life. Now, go to jail nothing will happen to you. They can hang him only after 40 years. By then he'll promoted in the company of the parliamentarians!

He should enter the politics, because politics is the last resort of thieves. He should be made a Minister and sent to foreign country for a junket like others inspite of Draught, so that he can steal a lot from foreign country and bring it to India and distribute some of it among other Ministers and top officials. Of course he cannot compete with Reddy brothers of Bellary and Coalgate Jaiswal of Centre and Kalmadi of Commonwealth
