New Delhi / Udupi, Sep 6: Kudhi Vasantha Shetty, headmaster of Vishnumurthy High School at Kudhi village in Udupi district, has been conferred with national-level Best Teacher Award on Teachers Day, at a function held at Rastrapathi Bhavan on Wednesday September 5.
President Pranab Mukherjee conferred the award in the presence of the union minister for human resource development Kapil Sibal, and his deputy E Ahmed.
Shetty has been serving as the founder headmaster of Vishnumurthy School at Kudhi since 1980.
He is among the senior headmasters in Udupi district, serving in the post for the past 32 years. Shetty had his primary education at Marne and Patla villages, and high school education at Moodubelle village. He did his BA degree at MGM College in Udupi.
He then did his BEd at Dr T M A Pai College of Education here. He did his MA in Kannada from the University of Mysore, while in service.
"The school started in the year 1980. With the support from co-staff, teaching and non-teaching our school has seen great progress. For first five years we did not have government grant, still we managed to run the school. Our school has achieved 100% results eight times. The average SSLC result of the school so far is 90-95% which shows the quality", Shetty said speaking to Daijiworld after receiving the award.
"I am very happy to receive this award. This award belongs to everyone including our students", he said.
"The school had started 'Bisi Oota' atleast eight years prior to the government's introduction of 'Bisi Oota (Hot meal) in the schools around the state. With the help of donors we have managed to provide meals to the students", he said.
English teacher Shetty gives more importance to grammar. He was inspired by his father Sadananda Shetty to become a teacher.
"I have great satisfaction of building a quality school in our Kudhi village", he said
