Bangalore, Sept 6: A magnificient Swami Vivekananda Memorial Structure in Belgaum, where Swami Vivekananda had stayed for a few days way back in 1892, is being built by the Karnataka Government.

The State Cabinet, which held its meeting under the Chairmanship of Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, decided to allot to Ramakrishna Mission 150 ft by 80 ft plot belonging to the Belgaum City Corporation free of cost to build the memorial.

The proposed memorial would also house a centre to impart moral education for youth, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister S Suresh Kumar, told reporters while briefing on the decisions taken at the cabinet meeting.

The house in Risaldar Galli where Swami Vivekananda stayed

The place where Swami Vivekananda had stayed for four days which was later declared as a heritage building became so famous that delegates attending the AICC session in Belgaum in 1924 made it a point pay a visit it for “inspiration.”

The Central government has also expressed keenness to join hands to build the memorial structure, an initiative of the Ramakrishna Mission, the minister said and pointed out the Centre would provide Rs 10 crore for the building.

The State Government is planned to request President Pranab Mukherjee -- who is slated to soon inaugurate the Suvarna Soudha near Belgaum, built on the lines of Vidhana Soudha in Bangalore -- to lay the foundation stone for the memorial structure, the minister added.

It is a good news that our state government
has decided to build a Memorial Structure to honer Grate Person like Swami Vivekananda.
At same time central and state education department should join hands with Ramakrishna Mission and its members to bring fourth his life style, thoughts and practical vision to make available for our children and youth through educational system.
Hope these efforts will help our youth to become efficient, wise and responsible citizens.
I really admire the efforts of Ramakrishna Mission, who are doing a wonderful job with the help of News Channels to spread the values and teachings of Swami Vivekananda to our students and like-minded people to make the "Social Structure" strong and "peaceful".

Building Sri. Vivekananda Memorial at Belagavi (Belgaum) is appreciable. But a Political party is trying to hijack Sri.Vivekananda Swamy & Chatrapathi Shivaji, and BrahmaShri. Narayana Guru for their Political gains and making them the mascot of their Hindutva agenda, which has made many people apprehensive about govt's intentions of building memorials in the name of great personalities of yesteryears. Vivekananda Swamy was a Kshatriya by Caste (Bengali Kaayastha, a lower caste), and he has confirmed that during Yajna Bengali Brahmins used to eat tender Calf meat baked in Yajna fire which he had seen with his own eyes, and also even though he had flown the flag of Hinduism in America he was not given any respect for the same by Bengali Brahmins just because he had a very progressive mind and wanted to remove superstitions, caste system and multi-Gods from Hindu society.

Let me quote Swami Nikhilanand the biographer of Swami Vivekanand, writes thus: "Swami Vivekanand told the conservative Brahmins very enthusiastically that in the Vedic period beef-eating was in common use. On being asked about the 'golden era' of Indian istory, the Swami named the Vedic period when only five Brahmins were suffice to eat a cow." (For reference see 'Vivekanand: A Biography', page 96.)

Swami Vivekananda would more appreciate support, health and food for the needy than a memorial in his name! A memorial structure is good but it doesn't have to be significant.

Hats off to BJP Govt for this solid decision.

Congress built only statues of Indira, Nehru, Rajeeva, Sanjaya, Menaka, Sonia, Rahula etc... They renamed all areas of Bangalore with above names. Soon Bangalore might get an ITALIAN name.
