BJP Protest Coal Block Allocations in Srinagar

Srinagar, Sep 8 (IANS): Taking their protest to the streets over coal block allocations, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists Saturday burned effigies of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in the summer capital here.

Over a dozen BJP activists gathered at the Press Enclave in Residency Road area of the city raising slogans against the UPA government.

Before the police intervened to disperse the protest, the protesters burnt an effigy of the UPA government.

"Following the decision of the party to take the protests against the coal allocation to the streets, we have gathered here today (Saturday)," said a BJP activist here.

"Our party is holding countrywide protests against the rampant corruption, prices rise and the inefficiency of the UPA government," said the activist.

The protesters were arrested and taken to the nearby Kothi Bagh police station.

Prohibitory orders under section 144 criminal procedure code were in force in the city, according to which, an assembly of five or more people is deemed as unlawful, said a police officer.

"We have intervened to restore law and order," the officer said.
