Father of White Revolution Verghese Kurien is Dead

Anand (Gujarat), Sep 9 (IANS) Verghese Kurien, who brought milk revolution in the country, died Sunday in a hospital in Nadiad following a prolonged illness, an official said. He was 91.

He is survived by wife Molly and daughter Nirmala, said Gujarat Co-Operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) Managing Director R.S. Sodhi.

“He had been ailing with kidney problems since quite some time and was admitted to a speciality hospital in Nadiad. He passed away around 2 a.m. today (Sunday),” Sodhi told IANS.

Kurien’s body was brought Sunday morning to Anand.

The funeral shall be held at 4 p.m., Sodhi said.

Kurien had served as head of both – National Dairy Development Board and the GCMMF – for many decades and was the architect of the White Revolution of the 1970s which catapulted India as among the top milk producers in the world.

Our corrupt politicians have been shouting slogans in the name of farmers, green revolution and actually doing more harm to farmers.

Dr.Kurien is the finest example of what one can really do silently for the betterment of dairy farmers, traders, agriculturists and industries of our great nation.

It may be very difficult to find a suitable candidate for his achievements in India.

May his soul rest in peace!

May India continue to revolutionise dairy farming like never before!!

The Amul boy late Father of White Revolution Verghese Kurien should be respected with Bharata Ratna.
(This is a story of Amul. A folk song plays to clips from the movie Manthan that talks about the economic hardships rural women in india faced after independence, a new co-operative called amul -anand milk union ltd was formed to help them. Today, Amul has grown to become Asia's biggest dairy company).

Dr. V. Kurien was a colossus. He was not an individual, but an institution. He revolutionized the concept of cooperative society. He has shown to the world how effective and successful this form of business could prove to be. He gathered the fragmented farmers of Gujarat and built up an institution that has become an unparalleled commercial success story. He was a great visionary, an entrepreneur, and a proud man. Every human being who is born has to leave this world one day. He lived long years - 90 years and left behind a legacy that will be cherished by many in the years to come. Kurien like person is born one in lakhs and therefore he will be sorely missed it is indeed an irreparable loss to the society. What an irony, a visionary like Kurien could change the lives of millions of people/farmers, and contrast this with our present day politicians/leaders who are accomplice in the suicidal death of farmers. It is often the case, death comes early to good people (of course not applicable to Kurien) but it does not beckon the crooked and wicked who loot the country and destroy the society. May Great soul of Dr. Kurien rest in peace.

Dr Kurien was one of the finest sons of India. Post independence he provided a much needed self sufficiency in dairy production. It is only because of such peronalities who with single minded devotion worked for the country that we can boast our achievements. Imagine a day without milk. Long live his tribe and may his soul rest in eternal peace.

Our salutes to the pioneer of white revolution in India. At the request of late Pt. Nehru in '60s, Dr. Kurien changed his mind to go abroad and devoted his life for the Nation's welfare thus the success of AMUL/GCMMF/NDDB owe much to Dr.Verghese Kurien. We may also accept that Gujarat and Mumbai never saw the dearth of Milk and honey.
But the sadest part is as gratitude we did not realise the need to recommend him for BHARAT RATNA when he was alive. Hope it may soon happen. Long live Kurien Sir's legacy and sacrifice.
May God Bless this greatman's Soul.

well respected and a gentlemen. we lost a pioneer, country is a looser.
But there is one thing special with Keralites that the intelligent/ educated one's always go out of the state always shine & do something remarkable. Those who stay back become unionists and do not allow any industry to come in. They enjoy life from the money their siblings send from Gulf or other countries. They are the most intelligent breed and shine under any given circumstances. There is community spirit within, If one person gets employed somewhere they will take so many of them over there and form their own union. I salute them

Kurien patented the process of making milk powder and condensed milk from buffalo's milk instead of cow's milk. That's how Amul beat European player who were using cow milk to make powder and condensed milk.
It is very sad to observe that this great soul was not decorated with Bharat Ratna in his lifetime.
