Gulf Voice: 12 UAE Singers Gear up for Semi-finals

Daijiworld Media Network - Dubai

Dubai, Sep 12: The 12 semi-finalists of GVOM- 3 UAE chapter, are all set to prove their talents before an eagerly awaiting audience of Konkani-speaking people in the UAE. The venue for the event, to be held on September 28, is none other than Dubai Gem Private School, located conveniently on Oudh Meta Road, near St Mary’s Catholic Church, Dubai.

Competition is tough and so is the selection of the best singers. Mangalore Konkans Dubai has very carefully picked three proficient singers / musicians to do the discrete selection of the two best voices in the UAE Konkani community to represent in Doha, Qatar, only hoping that this time, the Gulf Voice of Mangalore titles for the male as well as the female categories are bagged by the finalists of UAE chapter, bringing honour and joy to all the Konkani lovers residing in the UAE.

The judges for the contest :

Rony D’Cunha – Ace Konkani Singer

The poster boy of Konkani music lovers, Rony is considered one of the most soulful and powerful singers in the Konkani music arena. With an interest in music right from a tender age, Rony began his tryst with music through the church choir. A regular feature at most of the musical shows across the Gulf, Rony has struck the chord with the listeners through his exceptional singing talent. Training in Hindustani music has helped him breathe life into the songs that he sings.

Rony D’Cunha has won several awards and recognitions for his exceptional singing talents:

Best singer award by Mandd Sobhan in 1999.
Award of Appreciation by Tulu Koota, Kuwait, at ‘Tulu Parbah’ in 2002.
Honours showered by Kuwait Canara Welfare Association in December 2002.
Appreciation award by Karavali Konkans Association, Bahrain at ‘Dabazo in 2006.
Other singing competition prizes like Inter Parish and Inter College competitions.
Best Actor award by Kala-Sampath.
Best actor II at National Konkani Drama Competitions held at TMA Pai Foundation, Manipal.
"Kuwait Konkans" felicitated on the 23rd May 2008

Dr Prashanth Raj

Being a qualified doctor and an accomplished singer is the rarest combination one might come across. This uniquely skilled singer, Dr Prashanth Raj, has lent his voice to some of the most evergreen Konkani songs. He has had an interest in music right from a young age and has won several competitions. He has equipped himself with formal Hindustani training as well.

Some of his memorable songs are:

Bhangar Tum Mhojem (duet in the album ‘Swapnnam’ by Lloyd Rego)
Tuje Sobhitt Te Don Dolle (Mick Max)
Haum Ek Sopnnelli (Mick Max)
Mangllura (Anthony Tauro)
Cheddvam Borim Amchea Ganvachim (Mick Max)
Mog Kortam (Kevin Surathkal)

Nephi Rod

Nephie started singing at the age of 12 and has never looked back. Being a part of an orchestra group meant that she received significant exposure to leading actors, music directors and people in the music industry. Konkani music became a part of her life at the insistence of her father but she soon realized the opportunities in Konkani music field to exhibit her talents. Her songs in more than 150 CDs, not only prove how adept she is, but also show her dedication and hard work in becoming such a great singer. She is a regular feature in ad jingles that most of us listen to on the television. She reached the peak of her Konkani singing career through “Shegunachi Sun.”

Mangalore Konkans Dubai, is very proud of these three renowned singers/musicians and welcomes them wholeheartedly to Dubai, the City of Gold.

While the semi-final round in itself may create anxiety and curiosity among the listeners, the audience at Dubai Gem Private School auditorium on September 28 will go home with the melodies of the three Judges’ solo and duet songs ringing rhythmically in their ears, not to mention the exciting contest results of GVOM-3 semi-final (UAE chapter).

Although there are a large number of Konkani lovers in the UAE, the maximum seating capacity of the auditorium is for only 700 persons.

Those who are eager to attend the GVOM-3 semi-final in Dubai, reserve your tickets now.
