Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Sep 12: More than 10 people were seriously injured in the accident between a bus and a lorry at Yermal, in front of Kalyani bar, Padubidri here on Wednesday September 12 night.

It is said that the bus (SNDP) was on its way from Mangalore to Udupi and the lorry was also plying in the same direction.

The bus was packed with passengers as it was the usual time for office-goers, students and other regular commuters to return home.

As the bus was allegedly speeding, the passengers are said to have sustained grave injuries. The front portion of the bus has been completely smashed due to the impact of the accident.

Padubidri police have registered a case and investigations are on.

Just pray every if somebody travels by buses . It always tight rope walk, Having used these buses for more than two decades , I am not surprised the way the district has managed this. Street Lights Seems to be the last important thing when the Motorable carriageway which is at the bottom is not constructed, first the road has to be completed then the paraphernalia needs to be put, But alas this will be forgotten till another accident. Simple the moment you see a driver over speeding , just take the driver by the collar thrash him to his life. But other mute passengers will stop you stating that they are getting late. So As usual DK is mute spectator with out any interevention.

SNDP bus drivers are the most dreaded criminals who donot care for the life of human being. I have seen their careless driving and many a time the accidents takes place where SNDP buses are involved.
High time, RTO should take personal interest in laying down the speed limit for all the vehicles on highways atlest.

It looks like most of accidents occur at night in twin districts due to non-availability of Street Lights on the road. Most of the driver's themselves confused while speeding with there vehicle..even though he his much-experienced..!! In other cities accidents occur minimal..while comparing with Mangalore..!! At night driver's never bother at remote interior places...they just overthrow small vehicles and speed away..!! Some vehicles are from basically from out-station..!!

These incidents are common in our undivided Dakshina Kannada reckless driving, over speeding & competition of buses and all after accidents drivers are fled from the scene simultaneously peoples of Dakshina Kannada entertaining in general and passengers in particular in over speed, competition of buses. Concerned department and RTO authorities are MUM but only passengers and general public can avoid such types of incidents very easily. Passengers should raise their hands against the reckless, drunken drivers and over speeding drivers and passengers should not allow the drivers for over speed. General public should gherao the bus while over speeding. General public should approach the concerned authorities to cancel the permits of private buses and issue the permit for government buses only for these routes. Peoples of other districts except undivided Dakshina Kannada are united and fighting for the cause for simple reason also the general public will come to road and protest immediately they will burn the buses etc. But here in Dakshina Kannada people will fight for nothing example communally, home stay attack, attack against the student who did not join with the protest. Dakshina Kannada peoples are selfish and double Standard. JAI HO DAKSHINA KANNADA

All of us are at fault for such accidents to happen. First and foremost we the commuters, because by not resisting or restraing those reckless drivers, they act on the instigation of the conductors for and on behalf of the owners or the bus contractors, lenient behavior of police department the RTO and others who issue the permit s without keeping enough time gap in between and also due to other road users who are not bothered to follow traffic rules as well finally the absence of fear for consequences. Our system has gone to the dogs.

    Dear all,
First of all wish speedy recovery to all the injured.
We have the worst road system and the corrupt people heading the respective depts. We have no safety conciousness and hence at the slightest mistake we have relatively larger damages to limb, life and property. In planning the highway work, many precautionery measures were required to be taken BUT (??). The completed roads, in some places have water logging which is very risky particularly for 2 wheelers (look at casualty nos in this segment). Where there is work going on, proper space to move the vehicles is unavailable and hence accidents are caused. Add to this the competition, the time keeping, uncivilized driving habits etc. we are heading the casualty charts in road accidents. We need infrastructure, proper monitoring and maintenance which needs to be time-bound and safety concious.
If our government does something to increase the production of electricity to lessen dependence on oil import and to help economy, we look for ways to bring down the government and grab power. Likewise, if we opt for road building and the local politician is not gaining, he will create sand shortage, land aquisition problems and other kinds of shortages and strikes. All in all, we need to cleanse our own mindsets before blaming others to elect proper candidates and to maintain public order. MAY THIS HAPPEN SOONER THAN LATER...

Its’ not question of Permits for Buses in 2 Minutes interval nor even bad roads, but we lack proper law to curtail road accidents. Let RTO makes stringent law to control these culprits by way of implementing Law like, impounding the Buses for one month in case of minor accident & one year for grave accident, 10 to 15 years jail terms to Bus Driver in case of fatal accidents and 3 to 5 years jail for causing injury to passengers, 1 to 2 lakhs of rupees compensation for injury per passenger, 5 lakhs of rupees compensation in case of death of a passenger. 1 to 3 years of jail terms for RTO Officers for their failure to undertake repairs of bad roads which leads to minor or major accidents.

Time to keep, certain amount of collections to make in a trip, RTO provides permit to ply buses every 1 to 2 minutes, time keepers who think like they own the world, bad roads, what else do you expect the drivers to do. If they dont drive, they dont eat. If they dont get good collection they lose thier job. If they cant maintain time, the time keepers, stand in front of the bus not letting it go, this makes the driver drive faster to catch up, what else?
Our biggest mistake is not making the government officers accountable for all that they do. All this happens due to corruption. And end of the day, it all boils down to many incidents like accidents, robbery, land grabbing, goondaism, trechery, bad roads, no proper electricity, etc etc. Because now the people have come to understand one thing. Nothing can change our nation. So instead of waiting for change to come, (which will never)people will simply look to sustaining themselves and thier families in many ways. Like in this incident, the driver is simply a unknowing part of this corrupt system trying not to lose his job, going faster, trying to maintain time, trying to pick as many passengers while he can.
Who says communists are bad? Look at china, they dont have freedom, but look at thier economy, thier system, thier roads, thier infrastructure. They are much better than us.
Whats is the use of our politicians going to latin america when they can improve a lot looking at our very neighbor. Shame on you politicos. Shame on you all!!!

These accidents are due to stress and time pressure on drivers of Mangalore Udupi Route. As per my friend who was driver in this route couple of years ago was telling me that they are prone to accident due pressure from time-keeper and there is one bus for every 1-2 minutes. It is better to introduce KSRTC Buses and gradually increase number government Buses in phased manner.

This has become a daily story, not just on the Udupi- M'lore route, but within the city itself. Today, bus drivers rule the roads. They flash their headlights and blow their horns assuming that they have priority. No one dare come in their way. WE HAVE BEEN DISCUSSING THIS ISSUE FROM A LONG TIME AND WILL CONTINUE DOING SO. NOTHING WILL HAPPEN. BUS OWNERS/OPERATORS ARE GREASING ALL THE RIGHT PALMS. ONLY WHEN THEIR OWN FAMILY MEMBERS GET RUN OVER BY THESE BUSES, WILL THEY OPEN THEIR EYES.

Again RTO is at fault for allowing such buses ply with deadly musical horns. The truck driver must have applied breaks to allow the noisy bus to overtake and bus driver was concentrating on the bus horn as usual. If RTO does not take action immediately there will be more such accidents. All musical horns must be banned in Mangalore district.

The entire transport system whether it is Mangalore to Udipi-Manipal or Mangalore to Karkal is not proper. The drivers are just worried about getting their passengers on Board and the time set by the service bus transport. They do not care about the safety of the passengers nor the danger of reckless. The Horns are so loud that cause noise pollution and can cause damage to the ears of the public. Who Cares? The Ministers who have gone on a tour to western countries will bring lot of information and technology about safe driving and public safety. They will teach the drivers how to drive safely.
