NDA Calls for Bharat Bandh on Sep 20 Against FDI in Retail

New Delhi, Sep 16 (PTI): BJP-led NDA will hold a nationwide protest on September 20 protesting against the central government's decision to hike diesel price and allow FDI in multi-brand retail.

Announcing the alliance's decision here, BJP leader LK Advani said "NDA on Saturday said decided to hold a nation-wide strike on 20th of this month. I am sure that the suffocation felt by the people for a long time is about to come to an end."

Addressing the press with Sushma Swaraj and other senior leaders of the coalition, he said "it would be prudent and wise for the government itself to decide that they do not wait till 2014 for the people to give their opinion about the UPA government. Let them call for an early election. Let the people make a decision."

Stating that the government should be allowed to rethink over all its acts, the BJP leader said "if they are able to do that on their own by giving resignation-- the Lok Sabha elections are also due shortly -- I think it will be fine."

He said no political party's consent was taken by the government before making these announcements.

"They have not consulted any political party and chief minister and have announced this suddenly. This is something which the country is not going to take lying down," Advani said.

He said NDA leaders have talked "informally" to other political parties and "I think the 20th September strike will be spontaneous and successful".

"This is the betrayal of Parliament, people and thousands of traders in the country," Advani alleged.

Traders body to support

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has called for a nation-wide bandh on September 20, to protest against government's decision to operationalise 51 per cent foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail.

"The CAIT and Bharat Udyog Vyapar Mandal have called for a Bharat Trade Bandh on September 20, in which majority of traders across the country would participate," CAIT secretary general Praveen Khandelwal said here today.

All shops will remain shut for a day, besides traders will also formulate their future strategy to protest against the government's move, he added.

Khandelwal said: "We want the government to roll-back its decision to implement FDI in multi-brand retail as it would adversely impact the traders."

The Cabinet, on Friday, decided to operationalise 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail but left it to the state governments to allow setting up of such stores.

In November last year, the government had approved 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand. This was, however, put on hold due to political opposition, including from UPA constituent Trinamool Congress.

Further, the CAIT said it has also appealled to various political parties to extend their support to Bharat Trade Bandh call.

"Traders will also meet chief ministers of various states to garner their support for the movement," Khandelwal said.

Further, he said, the government even did not consult the traders and other stakeholders of the retail trade before announcing its decision to liberalize the retail sector.

Traders and opposition parties had said allowing foreign retailers like Wal-Mart, Tesco and Carrefour in multi-brand retail in India would lead to loss of jobs for lakhs of people.

The confederation claimed it has a membership of over five crore traders across India.

I second our PM's opinion.. Its not just that prices of diesel are high in India. It has always been subsidized for farmers but only the riches enjoy that subsidy.
As per the FDI's investment decision, this will only strengthen our economy and the money will be used for the country's development.
BJP's band will only hamper work, economy and add another mud slinging allegation in its cap.

BJP is disowning their own babe-FDI.
Mr. L.K. Advani's statement against the Govt. to call for an early election and not to wait till 2014 and the sentence "if they are able....resignation" expresses his greed for power.Out of 65 years of Independence the people had given them one chance to come to power which they could not retain.
Thousands of traders backed by this party and vice-versa,betray the country by avoiding payment of taxes by producing false income records and cheating the government.FDI in retail is become a matter of concern to them in connection with the vote bank.Once the FDI is implemented these very same people will play the trump .

Dr. Manmohan Singh has taken a right decision to boost the Indian economy. Both his decisions on increasing diesel price and FDI in multi-brand retail are good to stimulate and free the suffering economy from its present shackles. He administered right medicine to the declining economy in early 90s of the last century. Because of his prescriptions the country progressed and achieved magnificent growth. It is only due to this growth the NDA could boast of "india shining" after its six years rule from 1998 - 2004. The earlier policies of Manmohan could bring about the healthy changes during NDA rule since they continued the same policies propounded by him. But now it is surprising to see that the BJP is opposing the same good and healthy policies of Manmohan which are sure to take the country to progress in future. One cannot help saying that the present opposition of BJP to the policies of Manmohan is due to sheer political opportunism. They have been opposing these policies since some time now. This opportunism and frustration of BJP is hurting our economy. The call for the present bandh on 20th September is also is seen in the same poor light.

FDI IN RETAIL which is good for the countries like MIDDLE EAST where there is no resources for the production of retail products except oil, so it is not for the country like India where we have all kind of huge resources required for the manufacturing of RETAIL PRODUCTS, providing the best concentration on the QUALITY, it is possible to make it our own & we are doing it in all the sectors.
Our Govt should support our home products in aquiring the int'l market rather than bringing in foriegn products which will hit middle class & poor class people the most & also gradually swallows our home prodcuts which is not a healthy signal for the country's economy.
Even though UPA wants to stick to this FDI, why can't they call FDI for country's infrastructure works like ROAD CUNSTRUCTION, ELECTRICITY, DAMS, etc...etc.....where our country keep on fail.

The proposed protest is a BJP's ploy. Everyone knows, opening doors to FDIs and FIIs would definitely create more job opportunities in India apart from zooming our economy to new highs. For example, look at the Friday's capital market, sensex closed 14 month high and rupee strengthened from its previous lows. BJP does not want UPA to take credit of these reforms. Had NDA in the Center, it would have also gone for FDIs and Aviantion funding. Since they are sitting at opposition chairs, they need to make some hue and cry, that is all.

Coming to the fuel price hikes, how can a Govt. survive without repricing the petroleum product when prices of crude in international market has elevated. If there will be a in the crude price, the retail prices are reduced in India as well as we have seen in the past.

The proposed strike is useless and a disturbance to the public. Now, the threats form UPA allies, I bet you Govt. would not fall and our Priminister is determined to go ahead with his economic reforms announced on Friday, no matter whatever comes on its way. I salute your courage, sir. It is a win win situation for Congress. Jai Hind.

In India no political party is bother about development only they make out polities in it. India is a emerging nation and we have to take some time tuff decisions and FDI is one of it. today or after 5-10 years FDI has to come India as we are now global player.

Everyone will get benefited by this FDI new employment will generated, new roads and manufacturing companies units. In price tag there will be compositions . govt should put some condition on importing goods form a by this malls minimum some percent of product they are selling should be manufactured in India.

I am not a supporter of congress or MMS as he is mute all this days. Now he is taking some good steps we should support him for national interest and to put Indian economy on track .This Mamata and SP are playing politics’ for their own gain.

To boost our economy, liberalisation was started, Indian ecomony was opened up to trade and investment with rest of the world. We can't have protection policy continously somewhere, we should learn to compare and compete like CHINA. Otherwise, we will remain in isolated world. Plus and Cons of the policies can always be reviwed. Everyone has right to opinion, should keep aside political affiliations, if we are Patriots, should not misleed the nation! because

FDI Allow massive, multinational corporations, to buy Indian retail businesses and open new ones, forcing thousands of local businesses and kiranas to close

Push down wages across the economy
Destroy our indigenous and unique cultures

Take money out of local economies and send it to multinational corporations.

Why should Congress ask NDA to increase fuel price or implementation of FDI. Did NDA allowed Parliament to work during its Mansoon Session? NDA stalled the Parliament during Mansoon Session then how can Congress consult with the NDA to increase the fuel price and implementation of FDI. FDI is good move to improve our market conditions and quality of products especially agricultural products, and betterment of farmers, FDI will kill all the monopoly in the markets, general public can afford competitive prices and quality of products. 75% of Indian public does not know the benefits of FDI but some political parties are misguiding the people. International investors will invest in cities only not in the villages. There will be no effects to retail sellers this is just misguiding the retailers and general public by some political parties. In India domestic travel by airlines is most expensive comparatively western and middle East countries for example In India only rich people can travel by air but middle class and poor cannot travel because of expensive fare if one want to travel from Mumbai to Mangalore by JetAir/SpiceJet they are charging around RS 7000 in off peak and around RS 12000 in peak seasons just for 750 KM, if you travel in western countries/Middle East countries their fare is just less than Dollar 100 just for 1500 KM if international investors will invest in airlines so everybody can afford air travel with in India JetAir & Jetspice are opposing FDI because of monopoly. So million peoples will get job opportunities because FDI investors through out India in different sectors. This BHARATH BUNDH is just eye wash to general public to grasp votes.

Earlier when Narashima Rao, opened up the market there were fears that the Indian Automakers would close shop and see what has happened instead. Today when we see a Land Rover, A jaguar and a Ssangyong, we can proudly say that these are owned by Indians, Instead of outsiders swallowing us, our industrialists have bought out international companies and in return we can now own good cars for less cost and not having to wait upto 6 months for those run down Ambassadors and Premium Padminis. TATA motors and Mahindras are today the pride of our auto industry. In foreign countries you can see hundreds of TATA and Ashok Leyland buses and trucks. Similarly once the FDI in retail happens we will get to see world majors like Wallmart, Carefour, Metro etc, offering better choices and better prices, yet at the same time our own domestic players will rise to the occasion and provide competition. Less of our farm produce will go waste with better storage facilities and infrastructure to transport it.Only the middle men who are the backbone of the BJP and who today are fleecing the poor farmers will suffer. Therefore one can understand the BJP's game plan here.

Lets us analyze the Retail FDI situation.

Agriculturists: May benefit. But if Bangladesh or Pakistan or any other country produces for less our farmer will suffer. Is our farmer willing to take this chance.
Retail Traders: All mom and pop shops will be wiped out.
Manufacturing: India will lose as it cannot compete with China. So be prepared for cheaper Chinese goods to be dumped.
Consumer: Will benefit short term. But when there will be so many job loses will this Retail FDI be worth it.
Conclusion: Nobody in history has benefited from Retail FDI as the corporates get monopoly and control.

TOP BENEFITS OF FDI IN RETAIL

    1) Direct benefit to Farmers: The biggest beneficiary of FDI in retail will be directly the farmers in India. Across the world the big retail giants buy the produce directly from the farmers, thereby eliminating the middle men. Thus farmers will get much better price which can be atleast 15-20% higher than the existing price they get.
In present system the farmers get approx only 30-35% of the retail price, rest all is taken over by middle men like traders etc. For eg during the onion shortage in India most of the hoarding was done by onion traders, whereas they got price as high as Rs. 35 Kg, the farmer got only Rs. 4-5 Kg.
Thus farmers will directly benefit from direct purchase.
    2) Reduction in Food Inflation: The incoming of FDI will bring in strong competition amongst the retailers at the same time the elimination of middle men who are also the hoarders of stocks will help reducing the supply constraint. The direct purchase policy of bigger retailers will help in passing on the benefit of low procurement cost directly to consumers. Thus helping in reducing food based inflation to a great extent.
    3) Earning of Forex: India will earn a great amount of foreign exchange reserves from the investments which the mega multi brand retailers will do in India. Each retailer is suppose to do minimum of 100 million dollars, considering that setting up an average one store costs 5-10 million dollars, one can easily expect to get investment upto 1 billion dollar from each retailer in total, which can be approx 15-25 billion dollars spread over 5 years.
    4) Huge Employment Benefits: The international model suggests that all those countries which opened up multi brand retail to FDI added huge amount of employment. In India the government expects it to generate atleast 1 million employment over the next few years.
It is very critical to note that the government is allowing Foreign retailers to open retail stores in India in joint venture.

It just takes some common sense to realize that this would be disastrous for a country like India, although large foreign retailers, such as, Wal-Mart, will benefit greatly and a part of the benefit would go to Manmohan , and Sonia. People of India are digging their own graves. Why not be even more liberal and invite foreigners to join the government? We can find a very efficient and capable British to be the PM and an experienced German to be the defense Minister, etc.

Infact the scam began when they were in power. In Goa Parrikar shouted hoarse about the mining scam there, and now the Shah commission report has revealed that the illegal mining began while he was the CM. This very same shameless bunch wanted 100% FDI in retail, while they were in power, but are now are pretending to shed crocodile tears when the UPA has brought in a landmark legislation of allowing 51% FDI in retail and that too allowing each state the freedom to implement it or not. They will go to any depth and spread lies, hatred, divisions. This party the BJP is more dangerous to India than Pakistan, China and all terrorist organizations put together.

    Dear supporters of Congress...

I am not well knowledged about  Indian Politics. But, today we all should think like Politicians. We all should support NDA, on this subject. If they are successful in decreasing the "Fuel price", eventually we are the ones benefited. Look at the agenda, not the party... :)

Also, try to think for the betterment of the country not the Party. NDA or UPA, we have to support the ones who are on our favour.
May Allah, help the ones who work for betterment of our country.

Mera Bharath Mahaaan... I LOVE MY INDIA

FDI will create more jobs for the blue collar worker. Increase supply chain efficiency.Bring about better price for the producer(farmers, artisans, weavers etc etc), Eliminate the middlemen and their cronies who actually corner the big
chunk of the final price. This helps the consumers get better product for better price than what is today.
Those opposing are doing so just because of political reasons not because they have greater interests of the nation.

Congress could not work for the betterment of retailers any time in last 7 decades. Day by day our life is becoming very difficult due to price hike, UPA's poor policies, fuel price hike etc.

My sincere request to congress is that LET US LIVE. If you can't help others, keep quite but don't trouble others. Don't let our family come to street.

I fully support this strike. We have rights to protest.

We are ready to lay our life, but we don't let this happen.

    Jai Karnataka, Jai Hindustan..

UPA govt is looting from common man by hiking fuel price and compensating the financial deficit thru foreign Direct investments. This will cause unemployment to middle and poor class people. Where our youth should go for employment? ITALY will provide?

This useless congress could not give education and employment in last 65 years. Except looting their contribution is null.

FDI in retail should not be allowed any cost. May be Foriegn companies would have paid in millions to CONGRESS.

BJP is always good opposition party!?
They know only 1 thing- to oppose each & everything when not in power & do the opposite when in power.
FDI- is welcomed by all consumers & agriculturists for the simple reason they have been exploited by traders all these years.
More than 70% of the agricultural produce gets spoiled due to lack of storage & the prices they get for their produce is only 10% of the sale value.
Local businesses benefit from foreign investors collaborating with them.
Big Direct sellers will only set their outlets in Metro cities only, as such not all small traders will get affected as they are more interactive with their customers than faceless Malls.
Nobody will go daily to Bangalore if in Karnataka to purchase their day to day needs as its not feasible economically or the expenses incurred to buy will be more than any savings.
But small traders can buy from them in bulk quantity and get benefited.
Now the question is when 90% of the people would get benefit from competition & availability of good quality service & products at a reasonable rate why the 10% who have exploited them all these years must be favoured by some political parties.
If we consider these politicians- they have hidden agenda in depriving us from getting world class products & services while they travel abroad to get the same for themselves!
    These are Real HYPOCRITES.
