Kasargod, Sep 19: A thief was arrested on Tuesday September 18 for looting Rs 1.10 crore by using pin numbers of several ATM cards.

The arrested has been identified as Sandeep Chopra (26) hailing from Delhi. Kasargod police traced and arrested him in Uttar Pradesh.

It is learnt that Sandeep had amassed close to Rs 1.10 crore using pin codes of ATM cards of various banks.

The investigation was conducted with the help of the cyber cell, based on a complaint filed by Umashankar, one of Sandeep's victims.

On July 20 this year Sandeep Chopra came into contact with Umashankar at Kasargod railway station.

Sandeep Chopra reportedly told Umashankar that his ATM card, laptop and other valuables had been robbed while travelling from Thiruvananthapuram to Mangalore by Rajadhani Express, and that he had come there to lodge a complaint with the railway police.

In addition, Sandeep Chopra requested Umashankar to give him Rs 9,500 so that he could return home. He said that he worked as a cashier for Baroda Bank, and that he would speak to the manager of the Bank to deposit the amount to Umashankar's account at the earliest. Saying this, he even dialled the number of the so-called 'manager', who spoke to Umashankar and assured that he would deposit the money.

Thus convinced, Umashankar went to the ATM to withdraw money for Sandeep Chopra. However, due to some technical problem, the transaction failed. However, Chopra who was with him noted Umashankar's pincode without his knowledge and left the spot immediately.

Later, it was learnt that a sum of Rs 27,000 was debited from his account in two days. Accordingly, Umashankar lodged a complaint with the railway police station.

P Narayanan, SI of Kumble police staion, Antony, ASI of Kasargod station with the help of  cyber cell authorities started investigating the case. With the help of UP police, the team successfully apprehended Sandeep Chopra from his apartment in UP.

Sources said that he was involved in similar incidents earlier and had altogether stolen over a crore.

Further investigations are on.

    Employ him in Karnataka CCB.
The existing officers of CCB-CID are of no use. They only make big issue of small matter and let the big culprits free. The expertise of this conman will be useful to CCB as presently they do not have expertise to investigate such highly technical cases.

    Dear Readers,

This is called skimming whereby these thugs like the accused, skimming devices in the card reader of ATM. The moment you enter your ATM card the skimming device copies the information stored in the magnetic strip (black strip on the rear side of the card). Then they produce another card with copied information and once the PIN is noted, they withdraw money from victim's account. In some countries, these thugs are so advanced that they also install a mini camera that captures PIN entered by the inncoent cardholders. I suggest the readers whenever they notice such incidents of withdrawals from their account to either to block their card immediately or change the PIN number (Please note: I have been in the ATM industry for 18 years and have seen several cases like this in my career. Most of the banks now employ the latest anti skimming devices in their ATMs to prevent such incidnets).

The reply is to Sachidanand Shetty, Mundkur/Dubai
Please think before you start writing. CAG never used the word scam. Congress party never got the 'Mota Mall' as claimed by BJP. The issue here is potential loss suffered by Government. Govt. takes lot of policy decisions and most of the time the objective is not profit maximizing. If the Govt's main aim is to maximize profits then why should it provide subsidy on Diesel, Gas etc.
The policy adopted by Govt of India (Both by NDA and UPA) is a better policy when compared to other countries such as USA, Australia or Indonesia.

BJP is trying to mislead the nation by saying that there was scam of 1.86 Lakh crores and congress made this money. Congress had made it stand clear in this issue. It will stand by the policy and will take appropriate action if there was corruption or nepotism in the allocation of the coal blocks.

He is only petty thief if compared to “Coalgate Scam of 1,84,000 Crores Rupees”, “2G Scam of 1,76,000 Crores Rupees”, “Iron Ore Scam in Belekere of 900 Crores Rupees”, “Employment Scam in Gulbarga & Tumkur of 600 Crores Rupees” , etc etc. But as per our Constitution amended by UPA2 Government, we have to punish from bottom i.e. lower amount of Scams only. Best way to stay away from people like Sandip that just ask them to approach Police instead of giving any money or other kind of help so that people will not be trapped due to their innocence. But here again we have wide spread meaning for innocence too like parents and relatives of recently arrested terrorists approached Governor of Karnataka pleading innocense of terrorists and Governor summoned Chief of Police Department to explain the Police Act!!!!!
