PM Should Seek Fresh Mandate: Trinamool

New Delhi, Sep 19 (IANS): The Trinamool Congress Wednesday asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to resign and to seek a fresh electoral mandate to know if people supported the government's economic policies.

A day after Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee announced withdrawal of support to the Congress-led government, a party MP said Manmohan Singh should himself quit before the Trinamool central ministers resign.

"TMC ministers will resign Friday. Before accepting their resignation, the PM should step down and go for a fresh mandate (to know) whether the country supports (their) policies or not," Kunal Ghosh said on Twitter.

"TMC quits opposing anti-people policies. Congress should remember it is not their private government. They have no moral right to continue with those policies," he wrote.

The Trinamool said it was pulling out of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) to protest against the hike in diesel prices, allow foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail and cap the number of subsidised cooking gas cylinders to each family.

Ghosh compared Banerjee to Lord Krishna.

"Remembr (Mahabharat). Durjadhan took Narayanisena from Krishna. Arjun took only Krishna as sarathi and won. So, UPA may go for numbers, we have didi," he tweeted.
