Mangalore, Sep 20:
The protest across the district was conducted in a peaceful manner on Thursday September 20. There were no fights or untoward incidents reported until noon.

Agendas were discussed at the various protest points in the city.

However, people found it very diffcult to travel around especially due to the public transport participation in the bandh. Most of the stores and restaurants also remained shut for the day to avoid trouble. As petrol bunks remained closed, fuel shortage causes another hindrance for vehicles.

The festive preparation for Ganapathi procession also came a standstill as proper arrangements could not be made. The procession will be held in the evening of September 20. Devotees from the outskirts of the city are in a fix as they cannot travel.

People who have travelled to their native places for the feast and had expected to return today are also in trouble as bus services have stopped.

Mangalore: Bandh Paralyses Normal Life in City

Mangalore, Sep 20: The nationwide bandh on Thursday September 20 called by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and other opposition parties against the recent hike in diesel and allowance of FDI received good response in the city.

All schools and colleges were declared holiday well in advance.

Commercial vehicles like private buses, KSRTC, and auto rickshaws are off the road. However, a source informed that KSRTC operated for some time in the morning.

Some people were loitering around the city as they could hardly find any transport. Those who arrived by trains were stranded in the railway station.

Police are on high alert to prevent any untoward incident.

All shops and offices chose to remain shut and only essential commodities like milk and ambulance services are available.

The city as whole wears a deserted look.

As per the announcement made earlier, NDA and other parties are holding a protest in front of the DC's office at 10 am.

This bandh is a green signal from public all over India for UPA to leave the power. With this rate of hike in price, & dangerous steps as FDI, definetly & mainly Congress will have stiff opposition in next election. Rahul will only have to wave hands & people will also wave him hands(say tata to him).

Who will pay the daily wage workers who lost a day's money?? Does any party who called for bandh can pay?? Can any shop keeper or business owners can claim that they closed business establishments voluntarily?? Most of them closed their business just to prevent their shops/business being getting attacked from bandh supporters.. Really want to hear from shop keepers and business owners if they voluntarily shut their business.. We really need to put an end to this bandh politics..

well said Anamika . you are a true matured and sensible Indian ... these people dont realis and all indians that who ever in power UPA or BJP instead of working together and making India into a fast developed country .... they will always oppose and crib and complian and pick faults in others (price hike and his and that is all part of it ) who ever is in power ... may be if BJP comes in power something else will be hiked so then what ... whats the solution ???... its easy doing that ... but just realise ... if we all indians have a peacefull approach and the Bjp and UPA leave their differences ... and work towards making india a super power.... Thats why our country was and will always remain DEVELOPING IT WILL NEVER BE "DEVELOPED" BECAUSE OF THIS MENTALITY AND NONSENSE ,,,, THINK ABOUT IT

Often Bandh means that the community or political party declaring a Bandh expect general public to stay in their homes and strike work. Also all the business establishments and shopkeepers are expected to keep their establishements/shops closed and the public transport operators are supposed to stay off the road and not carry any passengers. All this is expected to be voluntary, but in many instances people are terrorized into participating in a Bandh.

Bandhs are powerful means for civil disobedience. Because of the huge impact that a Bandh has on the local community, it is much feared as a tool of protest.

Bandhs have been criticized because of the disruption of everyday life caused by them. The Supreme Court of India has banned bandhs in 1998,but political parties still organize them. About 8-9 years back, the Supreme Court of India fined two political parties, BJP and Shiv Sena for organizing a bandh in Mumbai as a protest against bomb blasts in the city. As per the news dated 19/09/2012 the state with the maximum Bandhs in India is West Bengal. Mamata Banergee is famous for that when she was in opposition party.

As Mr. Rajesh D'Souza says, a day's bandh will cost about Rs. 3,000/- crores. What a loss to the country. All this is only political stunt for their benefit. The common man suffers the most who struggles for daily income to support the family.

This is the freedom in a democratic country to call for bandhs as and when they want.

During the tenure of BJP’s NDA from 1998 to 2004, the prices for petroleum products were raised 15 times and in Congress’s UPA tenure of eight years they have raised the prices only 12 times. The decision to raise the prices of petroleum products by UPA Govt has only been taken under immense pressure because there was no other choice.
But the nationwide shutdown called by the opposition-led NDA over the decision to approve FDI in multi-brand retail and raise in the petroleum price, was nothing more than a waste of the nation's resources, and making it difficult for millions to travel across the country. It disrupted economic activities with commodity markets and the transport sector that is the life-line of India, taking a big hit in many parts of the country. Didn’t the NDA and CPI realise that during such bundh in July 2010, Indian industry pegged losses more than Rs 13,000 Crores?

Foolish people supporting bundh! Today you the opposition(BJP) is shouting hoarse but tomorrow when you come to power and introduce price hike which is inevitable or any other reforms then Congress will oppose it and call for a bundh. So where is all this going to lead to?Can India develop or move forward?  If you do not cooperate with the ruling party now then tomorrow nobody will cooperate with you. so dont keep harping about going to polls. coz tomorrow your fate will be the same lol

Did the prices come down?????Poor and medium class peoples are struggling for to earn each penny and our politicians are wasting our money what we have paid for them as a Tax.Dont think so any change will come in india even if BJP,congress or even anna hazare party will come as a ruling party until they realise the aam aadmi's problem.Better every one will Boycott for election.

Nothing will be achieved by observing one day bandh nor will it help our economy too. Those who like environment friendly atmosphere will enjoy the “Bandh Day” without any pollution from vehicles on the road. Best day to observe “Bandh” should be Saturday since most of them work half day only. It is notable that almost all Political Parties except Congress supported the “Total Bandh” but shameless Congress Government says price rise is necessary to curtail the Budget Deficit and another side they lost on opportunity to make good of Budget Surplus by mismanagement with “Coalgate Scam” and “2G Scam” just to please their own relatives and friends.
