22 Bangladeshi Migrants Sentenced to Two-year Jail


Imphal, Sep 22 (PTI): Twenty-two illegal Bangladeshi migrants, who had entered Manipur to work as labourers, have been sentenced to two years imprisonment by a local court.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Imphal East district (CJMIED) passed the order yesterday after hearing the case filed by Porompat Police station.

The Bangladeshis were charge sheeted under provisions of Foreigners Act 1946, official sources said.Two children, who accompanied the 22 illegal migrants, were sent to juvenile home, they said.

The state home department have been instructed to take up proceedings for deportation of the foreigners after completion of their prison term.

Manipur police had launched operations to trace illegal migrants at different places including Hatta in Imphal East district and Lilong in Thoubal district on August 30.

Police had rounded up 100 illegal migrants from Hatta and Lilong and of these, 22 were were imprisoned by the CJMIED and cases against the rest were pending in the court, they said.
