Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (NM)

Mangalore, Sep 23: Mangalore's young journalist Sandhya D’Souza has been chosen for the prestigious ‘Sarojini Naidu National Award-2012’ for her special report on Panchayat Raj and women.

The award will be conferred on Sandhya at a function to be held at New Delhi on October 2. The award, instituted by the global organization 'The Hunger Project' comprises a cash prize of Rs 2 lac and a citation.

Ronald Anil Fernandes and Guruvappa Balepuni had bagged this prestigious award. Sandhya will be the third journalist from Dakshina Kannada to receive the honour.

The award winning article 'Laila Ladies Ensure 'Safety'' speaks on how 'a small group of ladies in Laila village of Dakshina Kannada district are striving to ensure that every rural woman maintains menstrual hygiene'. The story details how the Isiri-Self Help Group unit, which manufactures hygienic and low-cost sanitary napkins for women, has enhanced women's health and given them employment at the same time. The article was published in Deccan Herald English daily on June 1, 2012.

24-year old Sandhya D’Souza pursued her studies at St Aloysius College and joined Deccan Herald newspaper as reporter/sub editor in the year 2010.

    Hi Sandhya,
Congratulations, extremely happy for you… more so as I too am an Aloysian.
Life Science segment is the booming segment and while you this time, concentrated on the hygiene of the younger women the immediate need and that of the future is that of the elderly too.
With modern technology / medicine having extended the life of humans, has given more scope towards R&D in this segment …
Speaking of it who would have thought of the use of pampers for the elderly which was just not heard of earlier OR no need of soap with the new concept of sanitizers.
As research brings more to the forefront request you to give it your best, you being the future citizen of India a country with such a HUGE population would surely need your works the most.
Keep up the good work, continue doing good and you will automatically SHINE.
    Kind Regards
    Aladdin Pais
