Sumanahalli Acquisition: Govt Betrayed Christians, says Archbishop

Media Release

Bangalore, Sep 24: The Christian Church in Karnataka is deeply hurt and anguished at the decision of the State Government to take back most of the land given to the Sumanahalli Society that takes care of leprosy patients and other destitute people in Bangalore. Despite the Human Rights commission’s strong observations, the appeal from the Governor and a strong public support for the cause, the decision was taken by the cabinet on September 21st 2012 that 45 acres of the Society will be taken back leaving it with only five acres. This is a betrayal of the minority Christian community by the Government.

We feel it is as an ‘infringement into the rights of the minority Christian community’. We have to question the intentions of the Government in taking back the Sumanahalli land which was willing to give away 123 acres of the Beggar Colony land for commercial development till the court pulled them up last month.

The Christian Community in Bangalore was requested by the Government in 1977 through the then Chief Minister Devarja Urs to take care of leprosy affected persons who were in Beggars’ Colony since the Government agencies cannot provide the kind of care they require. That was the reason why we started Sumanahalli. We were requested and invited to do take up this work. Land was given to carry out this work. We never asked for any land from the Government.

The leased land was used by the Sumanahalli Society to establish itself and develop a strategy and varied activities not only to take care of over 10,000 leprosy affected persons but also to rehabilitate most of them that a program of education, reconstructive surgery, vocational training, job placement, housing and marriages within the past 35 years. Retaining the focus on leprosy, Sumanahalli has developed several programs to provide residential care and rehabilitation programme for other destitute groups in the society as provided in the lease agreement- ‘for the purpose of conducting, running and administering a centre for the welfare and rehabilitation of leprosy patients and other physically destitute persons and their families’. Today Sumanahalli is the social hub of Bangalore with 400 people from the background of leprosy, HIV, disabilities, street boys, orphans and children in conflict with law live. They were all either beggars already or would have become beggars.

Sumanahalli has used and developed the whole campus constructing more than 50 buildings at the cost of over 25 crores to provide the best of services for the people. It is the home for the inmates since they are thrown out from their habitat. It is a rehabilitation center that has all facilities for treatment and rehabilitation including school and training centers. It is impossible to contain the activities of Sumanahalli within five acres of land. Moreover the buildings are spread throughout the 50 acre campus.

There were 128,000 new cases of leprosy detected in India in 2010. Most of the leprosy centres are closed. Where will the new patients and cured persons who need care after cure go ?

Since 2001, we have been running from pillar to the post to get the renewal of the lease done. The Government as various stages and forums had promised for the renewal.

The decision taken by the Government to take away most of our land is shows the apathy of the government to the most neglected groups in the Society. The land acquired and given for the use of the poorest of the poor are taken for other purposes.

It is also a decision against the minority Christian community in Karnataka. Despite being invited to take up this most difficult work and having very successfully carried out this work, it is nothing but a very vindictive attitude to the Christian community that is clearly shown through this decision. This is a betrayal of the community by the Government.

We will take up all legal and democratic measures to make sure that the land is retained for the purpose of the care and rehabilitation of the destitute people. The inmates hearing the news expressed that they will rather die there than leave the land. They were rescued from the street by Sumanahalli. We would not want to go back to the street.

2. Fr George Kannanthanam, director, Sumanahalli
3. Suresh Kumar, president, Karnataka Leprosy Affected People’s Welfare Association

I cant understand why we Christians have to fight these ill fated political parties. If they think that leprosy people should live on the streets and spread leprosy to every one, allow them to do so. Let us be proud of our govt which is at least helping people live on the street if not in a decent house that is provided by a few generous souls. This BJP Government has shown their true colour as it is anti Christian and anti minorities. In the beginning they have supported the so called goondas Bajarang Dal members to attack Christian churches under the guise of false conversions and they have spoiled the good image of Karnataka where there is peace and communal harmony. Now they have started their second attack on poor and destitute people who are suffering from leprosy.and the Government is bent upon to acquire the land for Malls and giving to their close freinds, land mafias for looting the public exchequer. All minorities as well as peace loving citizen of Karnataka that this Government should not come to power in the next election.

Send the old, poor, patients to the legislative assembly and sit dharna in front of CM office.
Have you ever heard of a hospital or a school built by BJP leaders in our state? They only talk about Christians making schools and hospitals to convert people. They never give account of how many conversions made by these schools and hospitals. Just see the situations here, the BJP instead of looking after the development works of the state, they are keen on acquiring land which is given on lease for the sumanahalli society. They have only less than six months left to vacate the offices held and instead of concentrating on how to win next election they are digging graves.

It is indeed a matter of great regret that The B.J.P. Government should take this extreme step to acquire the land which was given generously by The Earlier Chief Minister to rehabilitate the unfortunate leprosy patients from the streets of Bangalore and the other places. Instead of supporting this great cause for the betterment of the poor people, the B.J.P. Government has decided to blatantly take away something which was donated for a legitimate cause

It is time that people fight for their rights and bring to the knowledge of the public certain HOME TRUTHS.

Our beloved Archbishop Bernard Moras has rightly taken up this cause and it is up to men of all communities and all parties to fight for the rights of poor - unfortunate people who are affected by this kind of ruling.

It is time that ALL JOIN HANDS AND ENSURE THAT justice is rendered where JUSTICE IS DUE.

It is my sincere hope that The Government will review the wrong decision taken in the matter and take corrective action.

Archbishop Moras - Thank you for your concern and love for GOD'S POOR. May your fight for the RIGHT gain momentum until The Government relents and COMES TO TERMS with people.

Looks like sad days are ahead for us minority communities in Karnataka if BJP government continues to rule. People, use your voting power to vote for the right party next time. Sumanahalli is a shelter for poorest of the poor in our society. We, 'ladies of charity' members visit this place every year during Christmas time. Our sisters are doing a great job looking after these sick people. If the government thinks that there is extra land, it can help to construct more space or facilities to accommodate needy and sick people who need a shelter, food and medical assistance. I would say that God has given special blessings to the sisters and priests looking after the sick there. Let them work with peace, government should not trouble them with its cunning plans of land grabbing. We have eminent congress leaders, they should at least come to the rescue at this time.

Let the sumanahalli people get to the streets. I am sure public will understand their misery. Let us see how many politicians and beaurocrats are willing to hire them for jobs in their homes, rpemises, schools and the like.

I am sure, all of them love their dear life more than the BJP government. If indeed, there are people who could inflict others, let this be a social issue. People irrespective of their political alignment, must feel the threat of the disease spreading to them, which is presently controlled in Sumanahalli.

Or may be, send all the inmates to any other ashram where government has allotted land.

It is very strange that the Government is bent on troubling the Christain community. Everyone is aware of the great work being done at this leprosy home by Sr. Jean and several others. The Government really has no need of this little peice of land and would do well to leave the Christain community in peace. Instead of helping this noble commuinty which is running so many Educational Insitutions and Hospitals , the Government is targeting this community for all the wrong reasons. We hope good sense will prevail and the Christians are rewarded rather than harassed.

Our Government has their priorities misplaced. What is most important in the eyes of a common person like rehabilitating the leprosy ridden beggars, making their life liveable is of least importance to the ruling parties as they do not see any profit to be pocketed. Secondly, this good, humanitarian work is done by Christians which receives accolades from everyone, irrespetive of caste, creed and religion and this is a thorn in the flesh for the BJP politicians who call the shots. I am really sad and concerned at these turn of events and hope the central Government or some other most powerful body puts its foot down and saves this situation.
