Karkala : Three Women Workers Drown in Quarry Pond

Karkala, Sep 27: Three women drowned in a water-filled quarry pit at Nelligudde in Kalya village, Karkala on Wednesday September 26 evening.

The deceased have been identified as Bharati (18), Huligamma (19) and Nagaratna (20), all hailing from Shirahatti in Gadag district. They are said to be relatives.

The three were employed in the nearby quarry and had been to take bath in the mining pit-turned-pond where they used to wash clothes and take bath everyday, said superintendent of police Dr Boralingaiah M B.

It is learnt that the work at the quarry was stopped two years ago and water had accumulated over the period. It was not yet clear how all the three drowned, the SP added.

As they had two days of holiday, the three had been to the pond around 3 pm and did not return till evening. Worried, their family members went in search of them and found them dead.

Locals were successful in retrieving only one body. Later fire brigade under the guidance of Naveen Kumar, circle inspector was called to the spot and the other two bodies were fished out from a depth of 14 feet.

Jagannath Rao, tashildar, and Vishwanath Bhat, revenue officer visited the spot.

A case has been registered in Karkala rural police station.

    The police must arrest the gram panchayat development officer, the village accountant thahsildar and the commissioner of land department .These are persons responsible for not seeing the ponds filled after quarrying work.

    Agree with Ismail. If geology dpet takes proper actions these kind incidences can be fully prevented Feels very sad for the innocent lives.

    Geology and mining department should make it manadatory to the Contractors to fill the quarry after completion of quarry related jobs.Such kind of tragic incidents are not isolated one and innocents childrens and women are victims of man made mistake.In this regard DC of DK/UDUPI need to take note of the serioous of taking precautionary measures to save the lives.May souls rest in peace.
