Bangalore, Sep 27: Over 100 Corporators of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, which is largely dependent on the Cauvery river for its drinking water requirements, took part in the ongoing agitation of farmers and other activists in Mandya against the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

The BBMP Corporators went to Mandya from Bangalore in special buses under the leadership of Mayor Venkatesha Murthy to participate in the ongoing Cauvery agitation, which entered the second week against the release of Cauvery river water.

The Cauvery Horata Samiti, led by former Congress MP G Made Gowda, which is spearheading the agitation, is also protesting the recent decision of the Cauvery River Authority headed by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh directing Karnataka to release 9,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu.

The Bangalore City’s first citizen urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, also the Chairman of the CRA, to withdraw his order directing release of 9,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu till October 15.

In view of the acute shortage of water and difficulty faced in meeting the drinking water needs of people in Cauvery basin districts, particularly in Bangalore, water cannot be released to the neighbouring state, the Mayor said.

President of the Cauvery Hitarakshana Samithi G Madegowda wanted the state government to file a petition before the Supreme Court challenging the CRA decision.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka Bandh call given by various Kannada organisations on October 6 got support from the Kannada Film Chamber.

The Chamber President Chandrasekhar said the film industry would shut its activities and support the bandh.
