Ankola, Sep 28: Five persons were killed in a ghastly accident at Belase here on Friday September 28.
The deceased have been identified as Omni driver Nagappa, Krishna Devappa Naik, Lakshmi Ganpati Naik, Gupta Mohan Naik and Manjunath Naik, all from Suvarnagadde, Kumta. Their identities were established with the help of their mobile phones.
The accident occured when a lorry plying from Karwar rammed into the Maruti Omni they were travelling in, killing four of the five persons on the spot. They were on their way to Karwar. The lorry carried Dharwad registration number.
The impact of the accident was such that the front part of the Omni was completely damaged and jammed into the lorry. The bodies had to be retrieves with the help of a crane.
Locals said that the poor condition of the road was the cause for the accident, as drivers of both the vehicles tried to avoid potholes and rammed into each other.
The bodies were taken to Kumta government hospital for post-mortem.
Kumta police have registered a case.
