US Embassy Condoles Brajesh Mishra's Death

New Delhi, Sep 30 (IANS): The US embassy here Sunday condoled the passing away of India's first national security adviser Brajesh Mishra, describing him as "an extraordinary champion" of close India-US ties.

In a message issued here, the US embassy said it is "greatly saddened" by the passing of Mishra, and on behalf of the American people and the government, conveys its sincere condolences to his family.

"Ambassador Mishra was an extraordinary champion of closer India-US relations, and a friend to many Americans who share his vision of a US-India partnership," the message said.

"Ambassador Mishra will be missed by us all, but his contributions to India and the world will be remembered for years to come," it added.

Mishra, a former Indian Foreign Service officer, had served as India's permanent representative to the United Nations between 1979 and 1981, and continued in the UN, on deputation, until 1987.

He served as principal secretary to then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee between 1998 and 2004. Mishra was instrumental in India engaging the US with greater vigour during the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) regime.

He passed away at a private hospital Friday night, just a day before he was to celebrate his 85th birthday.
