Kundapur, Oct 7: In what is suspected to be a case of deliberate poisoning, two leopards were found dead at Hulipare Selkodu near Mudoor here recently.

It is said that the leopards, one a four-year-old male and the other a two-year-old female, were found lying dead by the locals who informed the forest department.

The forest officials suspect that the leopards may have died due to poisoning of their prey, a cow which was found nearby. The owner of the cow may have deliberately poisoned the carcass to kill the leopards that attacked his cow, officials say.

Tests are under way to determine the exact cause for their death.

Here, animals are tattooed or branded, so everyone knows their owner. Branding is cruel so I am not in favor of it. But my point is that all livestock should be identifiable by owner. In this case a tag or something should be used which the leopards would not eat. Then the owner could go to authorities and ask for compensation instead of trying to kill the leopards. And if he did poison a carcass, authorities would know who was to blame.
