Bangalore: Cauvery Protests Escalate, All Eyes on SC Hearing

Bangalore, Oct 7 (PTI): Intense protests over release of water to Tamil Nadu continued to sweep Cauvery river basin areas for the eighth day as Karnataka hoped for a "positive response" from the Supreme Court tomorrow on its plea for reconsideration of the September 28 order.

The agitators today continued their hunger-strike in Mandya, the Cauvery heartland, and staged a rasta-roko at Maddur-Gejjalagere, disrupting traffic on the Bangalore-Mysore highway. Processions were taken out in Mysore.

Agitated farmers demonstrated at several places in Mandya and Mysore districts, raising slogans against the Central and Tamil Nadu governments.

Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, accompanied by Law Minister S Suresh Kumar and Water Resources Minister Basavaraja Bommai will hold talks in Delhi with the state's legal team headed by Fali S Nariman.

"I am optimistic of a good (favourable) verdict (for Karnataka)", Shettar told reporters during his visits to Hubli-Dharwad and Belgaum in north Karnataka today.

He said the state would inform the apex court of the severe drought situation in Karnataka, hardship of farmers and drinking water needs of Bangalore, which depends on the Cauvery, among others.

Karnataka has sought stay or modification of the September 28 order which directed it to release 9,000 cusecs daily to the neighbouring state till October 15 as per orders of the Cauvery River Authority, headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Former Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, meanwhile, said government should be ready to take "bold steps" if the apex court verdict on the issue is not in the state's interest and sacrifice the Government if it comes to that.

Gowda said in Mangalore that he told Shettar he should be prepared to face "contempt of court" and "go to jail" if the judgement is not in the state's favour. Government should not hesitate to quit office if the need arises, he said.

The state had observed a dawn to dusk bandh yesterday, called by Kannada outfits against water released to Tamil Nadu.

Karnataka has been releasing water in line with a Supreme Court directive, asking it to abide by the September 19 CRA ruling to spare 9,000 cusces till October 15.

It is all political drama. The state is not going to suffer by giving 9000 cusecs water per day.We have suffecient rains every year. The state should educate people to store water and then all is well. The river is a part of nature and not part of karnataka alone.

Do we have government in Karnataka? Heard we have one CM and two deputy CM's. All useless. Government which cannot safeguard the interest of our state has no moral right to continue in power and better resign immediately. Useless BJP government in Karnataka. During BJP regime, lot of bad things happened. Attacks on minorities, corruption, attacks on places of worship and now this Cauvery river water problem. Where is Kota Srinivas Poojari? He can arrange some poojas not for water but for BJP government in Karnataka to act fast.

The constant injustice to Karnataka in Cauvery issue is nothing but lack of political willingness to resolve & respond to the plight of the farmers along the Cauvery belt. But this time the repercussions for Karnataka will be severe.
The reason for all this is the Hasty decision taken by KRA head -PM-MMS in directing to release 9tmc Water to Tamilnadu daily until Oct 15th.Atleast the center should have waited for the Intrim report to be submitted by the special team sent to study the Cauvery belt both in Karnataka & TN,find out what is the ground truth than play politics here also.
The intentions resulting to this decision by the center was purely & simple politics played by congress. As Congress is already hoping to sit in driver seat in next Karnataka Govt thanks to BJP, they are now trying to open Tamil vote bank out of DMK & AIADMK. DMK is a costly aly to be taken care by UPA in future & AIADMK has already blown trumpet about joining 3rd fron, therefore Congress is desperate to get some seats in next LS elections for which this is the foundation they laid.
Equally responsible is Karnataka State Govt who are busy trying to patch holes seeping into their sinking ship. Every days Yeddi & Eshu are playing Thu Thu Mein Mein wth their partners, Renuka & Ashoka. Water resources Minster Basavraj Bommai is busy ear biting Yeddi.Yeddi who took oath in farmers name is busy hatching plans to topple Karnataka Govt dancing to Madams tunes.Karnataka Congress leaders are busy visting their tailor shop anticipating to get ready for swearingin cermony. 3 cabinet rank ministers at center are busy lobbying as in who will be next Karnataka CM. Oscar Fernndis is only bothered about when is next Bustand or Bank inaugaration in Udupi or Kaup.Like "Kote Sore hodedha mele,Baagilu Haaku" Yesterday SM Krishna writes love letter to PM asking him to reconsider his decesion. Forger North Karnataka this time water problem in Blore from Febraury itself thanks to water poilitcs.

All congress MLA's should resign in protest. That's the only way to put pressure on centre. I hope PM will respond immediately. This BJP govt can't solve the issue. BSY who went to face Cauvery water run away with rain water with crocodile tears.
