Kundapur: World Konkani Centre Awards Scholarships to Kharvi Community

Kundapur, Oct 7: Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation and Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund, World Konkani Centre, Mangalore in association with Akhila Karnataka Konkan Kharvi Mahajan Sabha organized a scholarship award ceremony for the students of Konkan Kharvi Community at the R N Shetty Hall, here on Sunday October 7.

R V Deshpande, chairman of Emeritus Konkani Bhas Ani Sankriti Prathistan inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp in the presence of president and founder of World Konkani Centre Basti Vaman Shenoy.

Addressing the gathering, Deshpande said, "Education has become of the mass and not class. Make use of the scholarships given. Education is not meant only for the rich. Every child should learn and become a doctor or a lawyer and earn good name in society."
 
He appealed to the students not to become bookish but to gain general knowledge. "You should give back to the society and society will recognize you. Helping students in their education is holy work and Kharvi Mahajan Sabha is rendering great service. This process should go on. You should help other people in society," he added.
 
Scholarships worth Rs 7.50 lac were distributed to as many as 215 students of the first year and graduate students.
 
The programme began with a prayer song by Rachana, Mamtha and Divya.
 
Ramdas Kamath of Akhila Karnataka Konkan Kharvi Mahajan Sabha in his introductory address said, "Educate a boy or a girl child. He or she will educate ten more people in the society. Children should not suffer because of their parents. They should come up in life. Kharvi Mahajan Sabha is putting in lots of efforts towards educating students.”
 
Kanthu Manjunath Kharvi, coastal fisheries, Gangolli, K B Kharvi, president, Akhila Karnataka Konkan Kharvi Mahajan Sabha, Pradeep Pai, secretary of VKSSF, Venkatesh N Baliga, secretary, World Konkani Centre were present on the dais.

Vasanth Kharvi welcomed the guests. Malini compered the programme. Guru Baliga proposed the vote of thanks.
