Beltangady: Sowjanya Murder - Angry Students, Citizens Demand Justice

Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (PS)

Beltangady, Oct 11:
A day after 17-year-old Sowjanya was found raped and brutally murdered near Pangala in Dharmasthala, Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held a mass protest at Ujire Circle here on Thursday October 11 demanding justice.

ABVP state secretary Ramesh K addressing a gathering of students and public said that this sort horrific act has taken place within Mangalore University limits. The police action to trace the culprits should be immediate, he said.

"An atmosphere should prevail and be maintained such that girl students can walk in streets without fear," he said.

Students from Government PU College, Beltangady, Government First Grade College, Beltangady, Kalpatharu College, Beltangady, Prasanna Education Trust, and SDM PU and Degree Colleges, Ujire joined in. Also, citizens of Dharmasthala and surrounding places and self-help women groups took part in the protest.

Former MLA Prabhakar Bangera, BJP taluk president Sharada Rai, taluk panchayat president Mamatha Shetty, APMC president Kushalappa Gowda among others were present.

DYFI and SFI also have planned a protest on Friday October 12 in Beltangady.

Sourced said that police have taken custody of suspects in the case and investigations have been intensified.

Campus Front Condemns Incident

The Dakshina Kannada district unit of Campus Front of India has condemned the rape and murder of Sowjanya, the 17-year-old PU student of SDM College, Ujire.

In a media release, Mohammed Imran, president of the district unit of Campus Front, said that the incident has shattered the self-confidence of the student community.

"The incident will create a sense of fear among the girl students about their safety. A talented girl who wanted to obtain education and do something good for society has lost her life because of a handful of dirty-minded people," he stated.

"Such instances of atrocity have been happening around the country. The law is toothless in handling such cases. Women have no protection and have to live in fear. The government needs to enforce stringent laws so that such incidents do not recur," he added.

The incident reported in Beltangady is a matter of shame. The police must step up their investigation and bring the culprits to book, and thereby give justice to the bereaved family, the press release stated.

I think Prescilla Fernandes has expressed the feelings of most people that rapists these days are not deterred by age or clothes, enough if its a female! As for ABVP and Campus Front students protesting, I appreciate both. Like to add though that Campus Front is a sister organisation of the PFI of Kerala who chopped off the hands of Prof Joseph.

I agree with you Sandra D'souza . If the western dress is a problem, then this shouldn't have happened.
    Krishna, Malpe-
You are right. This is not the way to protest. The matter is not religious. So religion should be kept away in such matters where unity is needed, not diversity. We need to walk hand in hand in such situations. This protest is to provide justice to that innocent girl and it is not right to highlight religion.............

TO WHOM SO EVER IT MAY CONCERNED...I am still of the opinion()that abvp has only limited appeal and it represents small section of the student community. To show solidarity with Soujnya's family and mobilize support from all sections of student community a non party level agitation could be more effective. Now if you people politicalized this humanity issue that is up to you guys...

Protest only is not the answer for this incident but should fight till we get justice then never repeat these kind of cruel incidents. It is better there should not be any type of flags (saffron)shown and we need unity among us.

Catch the guilty, slap with severest punishment, hang till death, and then forget everything. Awake when next one happens. This is our problem. We are not pro-active, no effort to prevent. We donot teach our children at home or school or temple to be good to others, be responsible citizens and not tolerate injustice of any kind. We give education focussed only for job, the best like doctor, engineer and so on or teach to pray, do bhajan but never human values. We are helpless watching these kind of things happening to our beloved ones. We have such psychic sadists among our neighbourhood or in our homes and not able to do anything. As in family we have not prevented them to become what they are now, in school we have not been able to prevent them become what they are and as in belonging to any religion we have not been able to prevent what they become. we have the responsibility as family, as society belonging to any religion caste or creed, to bring up our children and impress on schools and religious institutions to teach human values first and then follows everthing.

If our police force want's really to take care of these crimes, they should make regular raids in all streets of our districts so that the culprits are scared of police before doing these crimes.Do we have shortage of police staff?petrol?vehicles?arms?salary?..or are they are scared about political pressure?.When there is any protest, rally police arrive in thousands in buses....where are they when nothing is happening?

Well done students by Protesting against the Police apathy. If the Rapist is from any influential family then the Police will surely come up with some imaginary story about the bad character of the girl or her father or mother as they had done in the case of Mahanthesh the KAS officer murdered in Bengaluru. Even regarding Mangalore Homestay attack the vested interests tried to tarnish the image of the victims and parents of the Victims.
Anyway we do not want our Tulunadu to become another HARYANA regarding Rape & female-feoticide.

It is a challenge for Karnataka police. They must crack this case as soon as possible.
But I am surprised to see some of the comments here by so called secular people. Especially Krishna Malpe and Ismail p. What is your problem if you see safron flag during protest? what is wrong if ABVP took part in protest?. if you are really secular You must ask why there is no Green Flag? why Muslim, christion and other religion outfits not participated? Please write sensibly, people like you are making every thing communal!

@prescilla fernandes, Mangalore,Indeed I am also with your sentiments, ire, emotions.Sowjanya's rape and brutal murder is heinous, brutal and horrific.Although demand for justice by students, citizens is justified and laudable,is there anybody to care about that?As long as our present toothless judiciary system is there nothing will happen.Police will arrive to the scene of rape, murder book some case against somebodyand go away. After few days something vaguereport will appear in the paper, some innocent guys will be caught, put behind the bars and shortly released on bail.Culprit will be releaved scot free and roam freely in the society without any fear. What I would like to suggest is police must speed up their investigation, catch the culprit and hang him or shot dead in front of the public without waiting for the legal formalities or verdict of the judiciary without any mercy, consideration, pity or sympathy. Then only rest of the public will have some kind of fear in their mind and whoever want to idulge in such activities must think twice before getting in to act.We all citizens of the in and around of Belthangadi waiting for the breakthrough and truth behind this kind of ghastly crime.

I feel very sad about the girl and her parents. The girl was in uniform. These days we say that girls invite troubles by dressing indecently. But the rapists are so sick in mind, they do not see the dress girls are wearing. It is enough for them as long as they are females, age no bar, dress no bar. Otherwise how can we hear rape of small babies, teenagers, young girls, middle aged and old ladies. The rapists should be punished with cutting off the organs which are responsible for rape, so that they will not repeat the cruelty.
