Udupi: Raghavendra Nayak - Role Model for Agriculturists

Udupi: Raghavendra Nayak - Role Model for Agriculturists

Pundalika Marathe

Udupi, Oct 16: Raghavendra Nayak from Shirva in Udupi is an agriculturist with an extraordinary zeal for his profession. He holds a BA degree, but his passion lies in not only in cultivating crops but also creating awareness about cultivation.

Having lost his father at a young age, he developed a keen interest in agriculture in his childhood. For the past six years he has been following traditional practices in agriculture by bringing in certain changes.

In his 3.12 acres of land, Raghavendra cultivates paddy crops in two seasons (harvest and monsoon), grains (urad dal, jowar), vegetables, commercial crops like jasmine flowers, coconut, arecanut, plantain, pepper, mixed crops like ginger, pineapple, and medicinal plants in 10 cents land. He also engages in sheep farming, poultry, dairying and so on.

Other than cultivation, he also assists people by providing them training, and information on schemes and loans from government and banks.

He also guides people who have land to cultivate crops which yield high-income like coconut, arecanut, plantain, red spinach, pepper, sunflower, cucumber, pumpkin and others.

Raghavendra has also spread awareness on cultivating lady’s finger in jute bag and terrace garden.

For the benefit of society and for extending financial assistance, he has set up 'Anna Bramha Raitha Shakthi' self-help group and Shirva milk producers' association to encourage farmers.

Nayak has adopted various innovative techniques like line planting system, minimum water usage, pipe water supply to jasmine plants, drip irrigation, terrace cultivation, organic fertilizer, weed control, compost fertilizer and so on.

Truly, Raghavendra Nayak is a role model for every agriculturist.

Mr. Raghavendra Nayak is very good role model and encouragement to youngsters.

If we spare a couple of hours every day, from our busy engagement on mobiles, net and electronic media and spend the time spared to work in fields, we can create a number of green fields and beautiful gardens, in our country, which can create a green and clean environment to live in good health, peace and happiness.

It also can be a good solution for our uneasiness, stress, tiredness and depression.
No need of extra yoga or club exercises, which also can reduce traffic and pollutions, with less consumption of fuel.

Hats off on your interest/efforts here. God Bless you.
As you very well said " we need more farmers/professionals like him" and in return one would see green fields in place of sky rise buildings, preserve the fresh air rather than to lead future generation to carry oxygen cylinders.

I was particularly interested by the comment made by Vanitha Rameschandra. I realize you are his cousin. Perhaps you could help me get me the contact of Mr. Ragavendra thru Daijiworld. I like to see what I can do thru international organizations to encourage small but sustainable farming like what Mr. Ragavendra has done. We need more people like him. If we can develop 10 to 15 farms like his in every district this will take off to great hights. Again, thanks to Daijiworld. I hope you recognize what a beautiful story you have here, Daiji! Kiran

Truly said as some have commented that because of these farmers we get some food to eat but till when is the question????.bcoz when it comes to development the authorities are least bothered to save the agricultural fields as it so happened with PATRAO in the name of expansion of the MRPL project and some of the comments have also supported the demolition, saying development should be given preference

The 7th and 9th natural picture irksome vigorously could not stop my tears. The same awesome daily gift I used to have it along with my beloved Dad during those beautiful school days. I used most of my time in unforgotten paddy fields and my beloved mother used to bring me "Pez (Ganji)" and "Karano Chutni" and I used to have it in the morning hours sitting under the coconut tree. This gift to me from my parents is awesome I say.

Raghavendra Sir...as said by Lydia in her comment, you are undeniably is a "Mannina Maga". From far across the 7 seas, I stand and salute for your splendid successful attempt. You are a true Kannadiga and our marvelous role model. I would in reality love to meet you and visit your green land somewhere this end October during my short stopover to Mangalore and gift my benevolent smile where I will have an unambiguous bliss.

Last but not the least your 12th picture with that natural iron (Kottu) in your hard hand will dream away my tonight.

Thank you, thank you and thank you Sir Raghavendra a million for making my day and my 'take a bow' to daiji team too.

    Myriad Godsends.

Hats of to Nayak. This reminds me of my childhood days where neighbourhood was a social bond where people used to assist in cultivation (by lending bullocks and also labor). Now, people do not want to work in the filed though payment terms have changed from kind (rice) to cash. At this rate, we may have to rely on other countries for our daily supplies.
Have we forgotten 'dignity of labor?'.
