Mangalore, Oct 18: Oscar Fernandes, Rajya Sabha MP flagged off the extended Bangalore-Mangalore train (no 16517/16518) at Central railway station here on Thursday October 18. The train will be bifurcated in Mangalore and extended to Karwar and Kannur.

There will be 18 coaches plying from Yeshvantpur to Mangalore, and the train will be bifurcated wherein 13 coaches will head towards Karwar and five towards Kannur.

The earlier 24-coach proposal was decreased to 18, mainly due to safety concerns with regard to Sakleshpur-Subramanya Ghat section.

Prior to the inauguration, a formal stage programme was held wherein Oscar Fernandes and his wife Blossom, K H Muniyappa, union minister of state for railways, MLA UT Khader, Gulzar Banu, mayor, Yogish Bhat, deputy speaker, MP Nalin Kumar, MLA Ramanath Rai, Jayaprakash Hegde, Udupi-Chickmangalur MP and Vinay Kumar Sorake, Piyush Agarwal, divisional railway manager, Palakkad division shared the dais.

Speaking on the occasion, Muniyappa said that the Konkan railway station at Pallakad should submit a proposal for modernization. "In Karnataka, over the past couple of years, we have seen an increase of 1,500 km of track length," he said.

"As many as 90 trains have been included in the Karnataka region out of which 28 have been announced from 2009 to 2012 for Mangalore. Out of these, 16 trains have already begun and the rest will begin to function soon," he added.

He also mentioned that local passenger trains must be implemented for better access.

"Early next year reservation through mobile SMS, e-mails and helplines will be introduced to assist passengers. Every effort will be made to make use of the available technology so as to try and eliminate untoward incidents in the railways," he said.

Oscar in his address said that the railway lines that currently exist should run as many trains as possible. "This will help to reduce bus accidents on roads," he said, and suggested including Puttur and Subramanya as major stations as per public demand.

Agarwal said there has been long-pending desire of the local passengers for a train from Bangalore to Karwar. "This has now been fulfilled," he added.

KRCL managing director Bhanu P Tayal said that Rs 3 crore will be spent on passenger amenities such as better platforms, drinking water, better sanitation, construction of overbridges and subways.

He said that passenger ticket reservation service will begin soon at Kundapur and Suratkal. The bifurcated train will be converted to a full train as soon as possible as the passenger demand is high. He urged Muniyappa to rectify the problem regarding washing of trains at Karwar station, for which Muniyappa replied positively.

Yogish Bhat said that there is a need to upgrade Mangalore central railway station, for which Mangalore City Corporation has set aside funds worth Rs 6 crore.

U T Khader suggested that Ullal and other smaller stations should also be included as they are currently ignored. "Mangalore should get over the colonial hangover and become an independent division instead of seeking permission from Delhi every time," he added.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said that Mangalore should be considered as a sub-division instead of Palakkad. JP Hegde said that the stations in Udupi and Karwar will help passengers of the Yashwantpur - Mangalore - Kannur train.

Oh Dear, you have not read the papers now a days. High Court of Karnataka directed Railway Board to run the Train now. All these white elephants like Moily, Oscar, or JPH done nothing for this. If they have done, they could have done long before because in Central, their govenrnment is there. Further, when money bags from Bus Lobby is coming to them, why should they worry about people. Even now Railway Board, has fixed the time table of 16 hours to Karwar in Train is a laughing material.
Anyway something is better than nothing. I am happy for this Train starting....

Bangalore-Shivamogga-Talaguppa-Honnavara-Karwar-Vasco(Goa) line will be Goldern-Tourism-Corridor which will even beat Kerala in attracting World wide Tourists. This will also be shortest route to Karwar.
Bangalore to Talaguppa and also Honnavar to Karwar lines already exist. But in between only 120 km of Line from Talaguppa to Honnavar is the only missing link to complete this Golden route. Karwar/Sirsi/Siddapur people should Pressurize for fast completion of this line.

I appreciate that the train has been extended to Karwar but it is now very expensive for air travellers coming/going to places enroute. Years ago there was talk of a station close to the airport but it seems to have died a natural death. See the rail fare even from Karwar or from Blore to Mangalore is a few hundred rupees but the taxi fare from the railway station to the airport is more than the train fare.the railway line passes not even 1 or 2 kms from the airport terminal but no railway station. Can this request not be reactivated again for the poor travellers who are going/ coming back after a year or two of working mainly in the Gulf.
It will also reduce the taxi/auto racket at Mangalore railway stations (both of them with mafia type drivers who know that with baggage passengers are at their mercy.
One more point, Mangalore Central is a "big name station" but has anyone really studied the second platform- no shade for over 75 pct of the station dripping fish water right across the platform at the northern side that all passengers must use and then no safety/ no security at the Eastern exit which is just a cutting in the fence and onto a road chock a block with autos/taxis. The platforms at other smaller stations and their exits are much better than what Southern Railway and Pallakad sub division offers to Mangaloreans.
Security is non existant anyone can walk in/ walk out including terrorists from this Eastern side of the station.
What is the use of expensive equipment being installed at Platform No 1.
    A scandal indeed.

In the above , we read Yogish Bhat saying that 6 Crore is kept aside for upgrading the station .When railways is coming under the Central Authority why is MCC of Mangalore City using its funds for the railway station .Mr Yogish Bhat , please make sure that the money that Mangloreans pay as Tax is used for the local Mangloreans .There are no proper footpaths till today putting peoples lives in danger . Please make sure 6 cr is used for the development in the city and not railways which is not the duty of MCC. Look at the Markets where foundation stones were laid ( Bejai) . No markets till date.No good service bus stand . First upgrade a bus stand for the locals which is of utmost importance and then think about the railway station .

The strong ruling as well as oppositions politians of Kerela could hijack the train to Karwar and the people of Karnatake has to file PIL in HC to get the justice, Inspite of HC order, it took so much time to get the train to Karwar and now all the big politians are there to inauguarate the train, shame on these leaders who are there to fool the public and seek votes during election for which they have not done anything on their own. So instead they can allocate one more night train or cancel the day train and run it for night.

Now concentrate on other Two main Projects beneficial to Karwaris.
First, one new line under construction from Bangalore to Shravana Belagola, which will reduce the running time of train from Bangalore to Mangalore/karwar by Two Hours as compared to present route via Arasikere-Hassan, or via Mysore-Hassan.
Secondly, get clearance from Environment Ministry for Talaguppa-Honnavara new line as it will reduce journey duration to just twelve Hours via Shimogga as compared to present journey of 20 hours via Mangalore.

This train should have be been flagged off by Mr. JP Hegde or Mr.RL Dias or Mr.Shankar Bhat who had put in every possible effort to realise this extension to Karwar. There was no need for the presence of either Mr. Oscar Fernandes or Mr. Muniyappa.

But the more important and hidden reason for this bifurcation and diversification is according to official estimates the M'lore - Kannur segment had been incurring a loss of about Rs.2 lakhs per day, the fact which was revealed by Mr. R.L. Dias. Out of 18 coaches why now only 5 to Kannur when until now the whole train was moving towards Kannur? For the past 3 years the train was running empty from M'lore to Kannur and neither the railways nor the then leaders were bothered about the daily losses. It won't be too late if the service to Kannur is cancelled altogether since there are many trains from Kerala to B'lore via Mysore and other routes.

This is the great news for coastal kannadigas....

We finally got justice which we missed from our Congress politicians.

What I am sad about this is, OSCAR flagging off this train. Lawyer Shankar Bhat or president of Udupi Railway yatri sangha R.L. Dias should have flagged off this train. It is due the continuous efforts of RAILWAY HORATA SAMITIs over the past 3 years, that this train is extended till Karwar.

I would have appreciated OSCAR if he had flagged off the same train on DEC 14, 2009 to Karwar.

Nalin, DVS, Anath Kumar Hegde and JP Hegde have honestly put their effort towards this. No need of Oscar, Muniyappa during the inauguration.

What we did not get from useless congress people, have been awarded from High Court. I salute HC of Karnataka for caring for the people of Karnataka. High Court has slammed KH Muniyappa and Railway Board last month for ignoring Karnataka in railway facilities. Muniyappa is incapable minister. His post should go to JPH.
