Puttur, Oct 19: Talk of a unique marriage. We have heard of marriages of all kinds, but this one is unique not because it is 'different' but because it touched the hearts of everyone who was present at the wedding. Unlike most weddings, this one was between a polio victim and an orphan.

Mahesh Bhat, a polio victim since childhood and Sowmya, an orphan tied the knot on Thursday October 18 in the presence of relatives and elders at Radhakrishna temple in Puttur.

Mahesh Bhat, resident of Pangalayi in Puttur, belongs to a the Havyaka Brahman community.

Afflicted with polio since childhood, Mahesh is not able to walk as both his legs have been rendered useless, but his zeal in life is commendable. For the past couple of years he has been an astrologer and with his family’s support, he decided to get married.

Sowmya hails from Varkady near Manjeshwar and belongs to the Bunt community. She lost her parents 15 years ago and grew up with her grandmother. But two years ago her grandmother passed away.

Her brothers Damodar and Vittal Nayak then took up the responsibility of looking after her and she began staying with them.

Sources close to the family said that Damodar had once visited Mahesh Bhat to seek assistance on some issue. Mahesh told him that he was searching for a life partner and asked Damodar if he knew any . In response, Damodar offered Sowmya’s hand in marriage.

Sowmya too willingly accepted Mahesh and consented.

"I understood Mahesh's condition and married him on my own will. We will live happily together," says Sowmya.
