Bangalore, Oct 19: The Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of Bangalore Diocese will be officially inaugurated on Sunday, October 21, Archbishop of Bangalore Most Rev Dr Bernard Moras has announced, on Friday.

However, there will not be any formal function and the event will be observed in all the parishes of the diocese on Sunday.

The Archbishop said the Year of Faith, which was solemnly inaugurated by Pope Benedict XVI in Vatican on October 11, will also be inaugurated in all the parishes of the Archdiocese on October 21.

Archbishop Moras explained that the Year of Faith, which commenced in the universal Catholic church on October 11, coincided with the of two great events – 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council convoked by Blessed Pope John XXIII on October 11, 1962 and the 20th anniversary of the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) given to the church by Blessed Pope John Paul II on October 11, 1962.

The theme chosen for this year’s celebration is: ''To deepen our Faith to build the community of love,” Archbishop Moras said adding: ''The faithful are exhorted to translate the message of Jesus Christ into action and bear witness to his unconditional love in society.”

The Archbishop explained that the Bangalore Diocese was established on February 13, 1940 and was elevated as an Archdiocese on September 13, 1953.

During the past 72 years since its formation, especially after its elevation as an Archdiocese, the Bangalore Archdiocese has seen tremendous growth in various fields, especially in pastoral, educational, medical and social fields.

The Bangalore Archdiocese is spread in the six civil districts of Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural, Chikballapur, Ramanagaram and Tumkur.

''We have appealed to the Catholic community of the Archdiocese to celebrate the Year of Faith and the Diamond Jubilee of the Archdiocese more meaningfully and spiritually by promoting true  unity and brotherhood among one and all and that they should not confine their celebrations only to external pomp and glory, fun and frolic and instead bring in new life into their faith-living and faith-sharing realms,” the Archbishop said.
