Mangalore, Oct 20:
The RTA meeting to discuss revision of private bus fares in DK district was held on Saturday October 20, chaired by DC Dr Channappa Gowda and RTO C Mallikarjuna.

The proposal of Canara Bus Owners’ Association to hike the bus fare by 15% was robustly flayed by various public unions.

Sadanand of Nagarika Horata Samithi questioned the necessity for increasing the minimum private bus fare from Rs 5 when the KSRTC buses are able to operate with minimum fare of Rs 4. He said that people are forced to ply in private buses not like human beings, but they are packed like animals in the buses. If private buses want to continue their operation then more buses should be run during peak hours, otherwise let there be KSRTC buses in all routes, he stressed.

Ismail, former panchayath member, Someshwar complained that more than 200 commuters are filled in buses with the capacity up to 30 to 40 passengers. Private bus owners having enjoyed profitable business are now proposing fare hike without valid reasons, he said and added that cost of spare parts also have not increased.

Mohammed Rafiq said that meager hike in bus fare can be tolerated. He added that in many of the private buses plying from various places to Mangalore do not arrive at State Bank (end point), but they just mention their final point as Mangalore and stop in Mallikatta or Kankanady. He urged that KSRTC services should be extended to all routes in the city.

Demands for charging half fare to the handicapped and to issue special passes for endosulfan victims were also raised during the meeting.

A resident of Someshwar said that KSRTC bus should be operated between State Bank terminal and Someshwar. He complained that many private buses plying currently will be jam packed once they reach Pumpwell.

Hanumanth Kamath of Nagarika Hitarakshana Samithi said that hike in the bus fare is not justified from any point of view. He flayed that the district administration is bending to the lobby of private bus owners. Those working in cloth shops, xerox shops will not have reasonable amount of salary to cope up with the hike in bus fares.

He urged the DC to avail KSRTC bus services to Someshwar, Neerumarga, Bondel and Surathkal among other places. He pointed out that monopoly of private bus service in the district should be reverted. He urged for KSRTC bus operation in all the routes.

DC after hearing the discontent of many people over hike in bus fares said that he has heard the proposal of the bus owners as well as the objections made by the public and will take a justifiable decision before the next RTA meeting.

I agree with k.kamat, Karwar./Goa and many others with same view. In the interest of common man & school children, KSRTC bus service is needed in Mangalore. Thus, KSRTC need to be the primary mode of service wherein Private bus services may be retained to certain ratio as secondary services so it could help commoners during possible KSRTC Union strikes etc. I recall my school days wherein private buses used to deliver step-motherly treatment to monthly bus pass holding school children by avoiding thier halt to pickup school kids at regular bus stops during peak hours. This was merely to fill thier pockets by using their bus space to fetch daily payers and deny boarding of school children holding monthly bus pass (I mean, when they found school children awaiting to board the bus in large numbers). Plus, the treatment metted to school children at their private pass issuing booth @ Milagris stop building was really pathetic, not sure if it is now improved or still left at the mercy of private bus owners (huge queues of school children and bus owners using foul language /discontinuing issuing bus passes for the day) each bus pass was issued at thier own cozy pace. All this happens only when there is a monopoly in such services. Last but not the least, they have very well earned thier name for filthy rash driving Reason - so that they could cover maximum trips to fill thier pockets by filling maximum no. of people during each trip which gives scope only for high number of accidents and breath taking rides.

Ksrtc charges lower fares because they don't have to pay taxes... When nobody can stop the government from increasing fuel prices, how can anybody stop Ksrtc from increasing the fares? People say passengers travel like animals in the private buses... Nobody forces the people to travel in private buses... It is the people who choose to travel by private buses because private buses keep up their timing unlike the ksrtc buses which don't come sometimes...

It will be a wise decision on Government part to increase the state run buses on maximum routs in DK district while allowing to run private buses as a parallel economy theary. People are badly effected by Govt's ever changing economic policy. To my best knowledge it will be better there are more Govt. buses on the road than private buses. The decision is left with RTO what should be the ratio and which are the routs to be given to private oweners with certain conditions.

Mr.Rakesh Why private buses must be canceled? In Dakshina Kanada Private buses have a history of 75 years in and they have been providing good service even in the remote villages. Why KSRTC cannot in nationalized routes. First KSRTC Should run City buses in nationalized routes like. Mangalore to BC road, Mangalore to Adyar, Mangalore to Faragipete, These above routes are comes under KSRTC Scheem and KERTC need not any permit from RTO to run therir buses in above routes. Even They can run buses to above place from State Bank Terminal with out any permt.

Good to see KSRTC buses in M'lore city. Let the Private bus owners increase the fare but limit the standing passengers to 30 or 40, that is permitted by RTO. Let the Private buses not park in the nights on pubic roads.

Based on the increase in the volume of passengers and limited roads, the best solution can be to have adequate public transport vehicles, by considerably reducing the individual vehicles.

Mushrooming of vehicles on roads has to be avoided, to control traffic jams and road congestions.

Ensuring the safety on roads is the necessity of the day, to avoid the expensive sacrifices of precious lives on roads, every day.

I agree that the city bus charges should not be raised. Also, I have noticed that every time when the diesel price is hiked, the KSRTC buses for long route are the first to raise the ticket even before the private operaters does. KSRTC can't wait atleast for a week. Next day transport minister annouces that the corporation will incur losses in crores per day if the ticket prices are not raised. In some cases private buses are cheaper compared to KSRTC for long routes. Even the KSRTC operators should be dealt in the same way as private operators.

I fully agree with Mr.Sadanand of Nagarika Horata Samithi and rest of the people present in the meeting.Canara bus Owners Association only interested in increasing the fare which they are already collecting from the passengers without any justification.Only viable solution/remedy as suggested by many to allow KSRTC buses to ply in all the routes.Complete private buses to be off the road permanently.Arrogant attitudes of the conductors,unprofessional/drunken drivers, senseless driving and the way commuters are being packed like animals are really sorry affairs.According to my opinion government buses are more convinient, fares are very reasonable, commuters are not being packed like animals.By all means concerned department/authorities must think of allowing more KSRTC buses to ply in all the routes without any hesitation or hand in gloves with canara bus owners association.Yes if at all they want to allow private buses to ply conditions/terms must be applied like no overloading, they have to reach the commuter to his actual destination rather than ping them in between on the or mid of his/her destination, fare should be very reasonable, they must not talk about fare increase evry quarter.Driver/Conductor behaviour should be very polite towards passengers. Now they are behaving like they are the owners of the buses whcih I have observed especially in city buses.Increase in far at this juncture is not at all necessiated that is only lame uses they are citing. Now most of the people prefer to have KSRTC buses in all the routes.

No.The fare should allow to Rise.First the Conditions of the Passengers must improve.WITH one Condition they can allow to increase the Rate i.e.In each BUS as per Capacity entry only. Not a single Passenger more in each bus.Are they ready for this?(Canara bus Owners Asso)They simply attend the meeting. This is only a eye wash meeting. See the Photos, they bow the head down &sit.Because already they have made the understanding with the Administration.

I FEEL ALL PRIVATE BUSES MUST BE CANCEL. PREFERENCE MUST BE GIVEN TO ONLY SRTC BUSES.

WE CAN AVOID ACCIDENT CASES IN FUTURE IF KSRTC BUSES FLY IN ROADS.

Best idea to ply more KSRTC buses where ever there is a mad rush. But introducing few more KSRTC buses in all rush routes, will lead to another problem of Employees Union will go on strike whenever they want. Then the question arises do we have to cope with Private Buses or wait for KSRTC to come?

If KSRTC plying with RS 4 minimum fare then press in to more KSRTCservices and don't yield to Private Bus lobby.DC sir, if KSRTC running smoothly with RS 4 minimum, there is no logic in the price hike request from Private operators.
