Bangalore, Oct 21 (IANS): Reeling under massive financial crisis of his Kingfisher airlines, liquor baron Vijay Mallya was in for another shock Saturday - his firm's greenfield beer plant in Karnataka could face action for "unofficially" operating without pollution board clearance.
The plant at Nanjangud in Mysore district, about 160 km from Bangalore, has been operating "unofficially" for a few months without proper clearance and "suitable action" would be taken, Karnataka Ecology and Environment Minister Sogadu Shivanna told reporters here Saturday.
The United Breweries Ltd had said in August that Nanjangud might start production sometime in September.
Shivanna said he had visited the plant three weeks ago and found the company had set up a sewage and effluent treatment plant without approval of the state pollution control board.
The state government's plan to act against UB comes at a time when Mallya is already under severe strain following months of problems in his airlines, whose licence was suspended Saturday by the civil aviation authorities.
