Italian Lady Bequeathes $2.5 mn to her Dog

Rome, Oct 22 (IANS/RIA Novosti): An Italian lady has given away all her property worth about 2 million euros ($2.5 million) to her beloved dog.

The 84-year-old woman, living in Caserta town with her daughter and several grandchildren, has made the will stating her mongrel dog called Kikko will inherit two apartments, several land estates and also bank accounts.

The old woman has decided this soon after her husband's death, according to her lawyer Lucia Esposito who announced the lady's decision Saturday. She has signed the will with her own hand, Esposito said, adding that her client also consulted with other lawyers who had had the practice of attesting documents like this.

Under the Italian law, bequeathing any property to domestic animals has no legal force. Therefore, people willing to bequeath their property to their beloved cats or dogs must appoint an executor of their will, either a private individual or a public organisation.

The executor is obliged to ensure a worthy life-long existence of the domestic animal after receiving the right of access to all bequeathed valuables.

The woman has appointed her lawyer Esposito as the executor of her will.
