Krishna Quits as Foreign Minister Ahead of Cabinet Reshuffle

Krishna Quits as Foreign Minister Ahead of Cabinet Reshuffle

New Delhi, Oct 26 (PTI):  External Affairs Minister S M Krishna resigned today ahead of the reshuffle of the Union Cabinet scheduled on Sunday.

The 80-year-old leader from Karnataka  is believed to have sent his resignation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the afternoon, sources said. Indications are that with the Assembly elections due before next May in Karnataka the former Chief Minister may be given a party assignment in the state.

The resignation is also a clear indication that the Union Council of Ministers is set for a revamp on Sunday with the induction of new faces considered close to Rahul Gandhi and elevation of some young ministers of state.

Whether Gandhi himself would join the government or not was still a matter of speculation though sources say that sometime back he was inclined towards such a possibility. Krishna was made the External Affairs Minister immediately after the elections in 2009 when UPA came back to power for the second time. His name has been part of the speculation whenever  there was speculation about a Cabinet reshuffle.

The possible names of the successors in the External Affairs Ministry include Commerce Minister Anand Sharma. The other changes, expected to take place on Sunday, could include ministers holding dual portfolio shedding one of their responsibilities.

Actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi may be inducted into the ministry as a reward for his help in ensuring the stability of Congress government in Andhra Pradesh with support of his 18 MLAs.

It is no secret that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is keen to have  Rahul Gandhi inducted into his Cabinet but so far the young MP was not not inclined as he was focused on building the Congress organisation, especially the youth wing.

Another proposal making the rounds is that Gandhi may be elevated from being a General Secretary to the revived post of Working President. The Congress is said to be working on more measures to reach the 'aam aadmi' (common man) on the lines of the NREG scheme which had paid rich dividends to the party in the last elections.

Younger ministers like Sachin Pilot and Jyotiraditya Scindia are likely to be promoted and may get independent portfolios. There has been speculation about a reshuffle in the Cabinet for quite some time now, especially after the exit of Trinamool Congress ministers both at the levels of Cabinet and Ministers of State levels.

There have been berths vacated by DMK representatives A Raja and Dayanidhi Maran in the last two years after their names cropped in the 2G scam.  However, DMK President M Karunanidhi had recently made clear that his party will not not like to reclaim their lost berths.

Yesterday also Minister of State in the PMO V Narayanasamy met Karunanidhi at his residence in Chennai when DMK leader is believed to have stuck to his position.

Congress sources said that the reshuffle and induction could be largely from the party. There is also speculation that some young faces, considered close to Rahul, like Manicka Tagore and Meenakshi Natarajan could be inducted into the council of ministers.

HRD Minister  Kapil Sibal (Telecom),  Road and Transport Minister C P Joshi (Railways),  Law Minister Salman Khurshid (Minority Affairs)  and Corporate Affairs Affairs Minister M Veerappa Moily (Power) and Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi (MSME, S and T and Earth Sciences).

With six ministers from TMC leaving, two to three Congress leaders from West Bengal are expected to be accommodated. The names of Deepa Dashmunshi and Adhir Choudhury, known detractors of TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and West Bengal PCC chief Pradeep Bhatacharjee are doing the rounds.

With the death of Vilasrao Deshmukh, there is a vacancy for a cabinet minister from Maharashtra. Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahai and Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaisawal have come under attack from the Opposition on the coal block allocation issue.

Changes in the government and the party could be taking place in tandem as there is a possibility that some of the ministers would be drafted for party work, sources said.

Escorting terrorists to Kandahar was the most embarrassing act on the part of the then Foreign Minister. It brought shame to the nation. By swapping jailed terrorists, hostages' release could have been secured by sending some junior official from the foreign ministry. This was the second great blunder of NDA during the hijack crisis, the first being allowing the plane to takeoff from Amritsar.

Your double standard party congress who didnt take any measures even after intelligence report on 26/11 Mumbai attack and let so many innocent people die in the hands of terrorist. Regarding hoisting paki flag. The paki flag was hoisted by Ramasene and for your kind information Ramasene is the right wing of your double standard party congress and not BJP or sangh parivar - Sandesh Shetty...

Prakash Jawdekar will lose the post of BJP spokesperson as they have got new spokesperson that is Sandesh Shetty. Why NDA government protected Afzal Guru? Parliament attack happened during NDA regime and some innocents were killed as well. Regarding Rama Sene, everybody knows whose baby it is. Now BJP is disowning just to secure hindu vote banks. But civilized hindus won't bring BJP to power in Karnataka again. See the condition of BJP. Narendra Modi was not allowed to campaign in Bihar by JD(U) which is one of the constituent of NDA. Now there are talks that Gadkari should not be allowed to campaign for BJP in Gujrat.

Reshmi Salian, Mangalore there is lot of difference in talking and doing. You are talking like uttara kumara i.e so years after the incident saying that you will stick to your comments. For your kind information NDA govt saved 200 innocent indians by realising terrorist and not like your double standard party congress who didnt take any measures even after intelligence report on 26/11 Mumbai attack and let so many innocent people die in the hands of terrorist. Regarding hoisting paki flag. The paki flag was hoisted by Ramasene and for your kind information Ramasene is the right wing of your double standard party congress and not BJP or sangh parivar. Whereas your paid media channels are not ready to disclose that fact.

@Rohith shetty, london whatever it is you still keeping saying jai ho jai ho of such useless minister. What was SMK's contribution towards our state when he was CM nothing. Excepting developing bangalore he ignored other parts of our state during his tenure as CM. BJP state govt have atleast undertaken many good development works throughtout the state. It's only their internal dispute which has been lead to the downfall of that party.

May be it is because of his cauvery stand he is ousted. Its a basic mistake from congress leadership to give an important post which needs extentive travel to a 80 years old man. Whatever it is Krishna is a well educated man and he should be catered with another imported portfolio in the ministery rather than eliminating totally. Why then other inefficient ministers are allowed to continue? These ministers should be outsted whereas Krishna should be accomodated with a important portfolio.

At prsent KPCC is controlled by Krishna's aides headed by Dr.Parameshwar and it is seen difficulty within his Party. There are many detractors on board former Dy CM Siddaramaiah, former minister D.K.Shivakumar and Lingayats' lobby led by Shamanur Shivashankarappa and another group led by former minister R V Despande cannot stand each other. Now it is not clear at all whether Krishna would return as KPCC President or given an important post to campaign for the party in the elections, but it is in the best intrest of the party. It is seen from last two months inside rebellion has been brewing to replace Dr Parameshwar with other major communities.Just watch for any further developments!.Jai Ho...

In a country which has long history of being largest democracy, there is no place for these emotional views. Yes, I feel the same about all criminals. Be it Osama, Hitler, Afzal, Kasab, Veerappan, Chota Rojan, or Dawood, none of these criminals have religion or political party. If you think Congress cannot protect the country why did people elect them for 60 years? May be for one simple reason, it is the only party which has national interests, rest of them either religious OR regional interests.

Perhaps most of you guys dont know, he did his Masters in Law from South Methodist University, in Texas US in 1959 and taught briefly in a Law College in Bangalore in early sixties.

There is no second thought about S M Krishna's qualifications or crediblity to holding post such as Externel affairs, but its for good he resigned from this post as we need someone more outspoken frank & un-reserved. I have seen some of his media breifings after meeting foreign ministers of various countries in India & Abroad, SMK was acking just like MMS , words were struggling to come out of his mouth even with a sript in front of him. While foregin ministers of some poor or under devloped countires looked more confident than him in front of media. We should have a representitive who is prepared to go out front and do and say what is necessary whether to foreign ministers, or prime ministers of other countries and indeed to relish it. He must be robust, has and must use to the full, his duty to warn, argue and protest, as well as to inform, advise and ultimately to act on instructions when it some to driving India's foreign policy and the problems of NRI's who is treated like 2nd class citizens in their own country and also abroad in their country of residence.Of course to do this he must have the confidence of our own government and represent our policy accurately, but the method and timing must often be his own.

Because of his cast and being closeness with Gandhi family, he managed to remain in cabinet for such a long time.

Before 2008 election he resigned from post of MH Governor and came to Karnataka and results are history...

Before 2013 election he resigned from cabinet minister and came to Karnataka and the results are anticipated :-)

He should be complemented for his voluntary resignation instead of clinging to his post just like any other Congresswala.

Very good... Nice job done... This should have happened long back... Better late than never..

More than external affairs he spent his valuable time in hand shaking with Hina Rabbani and Hilary Clinton.
